Abstract

The study of root aerenchyma development of wetland paddy cv."anak daro" and upland paddy cv. "merah" at nursery stageby flooding treatment was conducted from January to April 2013 in green house and Laboratory of Plant Development and Structure, Biology Departement, Andalas University, Padang. The objective of this study was to observe the aerechyma development in the root cortex and its zone along root. The root of paddy as materials were prepared by the paraffin method. The result showed that aerenchyma was developed from cortical cells of proximal root either in wetland or upland paddy in two days after seedling. At 8 days after seedling, wetland paddy with flooding treatment formed 27-29 aerenchymatous cavities compared to 27-28 cavities of their control. Upland paddy with flooding treatment formed 28-30 aerenchymatous cavities and did not form any cavity on their control.. The aerenchyma of both paddies developed completely between outer and inner cortex in 14 days after seedling. The aerenchymatous zone was developed completely from proximal up to distal root at 21 days after seedling. Keywords: wetland paddy, upland paddy, flooding, aerenchyma development, root

Abstract

An examination of lead accumulation on leaves growth Angsana (Pterocarpus indicus Willd) was conducted from August to November 2012 in Plant Physiology Laboratory, Andalas University, Padang. The aim of the study was to find correlation between accumulation of lead and leaves size and stomatal density. Statistical analysis used kruskal wallis-test and linear regression. The result showed that Angsana’s leaves stopped growing after 25 days old with achieved 25.99 cm width, 345 per mm2 stomatal density and 0.73 mg per gr of chlorophyll content. Concentration of lead increased gradually from 0.00 mg per kg at early and 0.021 mg per kg in 25 days. There was no significant correlation between age of leaves and lead concentration. However, there was a positive correlation between width of leaves and lead concetration (R= 0.862).Keywords: Pterocarpus indicus, accumulation of Pb, age and size of leave.

Abstract

Taxonomical study of Orchidaceae at Talang Mountain had been done from September 2012 to March 2013. Plant samples were collected along climbing path of Talang Mountain using survey method. Those samples were processed and identified at Herbarium of Andalas University (Herbarium ANDA) Padang. This study found 23 species of orchids which belong to 16 genera (i.e. Arundina, Bulbophyllum, Ceratostylis, Coelogyne, Chelonistele, Dendrobium, Dendrochilum, Eria, Hylophila, Liparis, Oberonia, Peristylus, Phaius, Pholidota, Sphatoglotis, and Trichoglottis). Fifteen species were ephyphytic and eights pecies were teresterial plant. One speciesof the orchids (Eria merapiensis Schltr.) is endemic in Sumatra. Keywords : orchidaceae, species, identification, Talang Mountain, endemic.

Abstract

An inventory of birds visiting Jirak (Eurya acuminata) at Limau Manis Padang was done from July to December 2011. The study used point sampling method to collect birds data and determine birds frequency that visited Jirak (Eurya acuminata). This study found 12 birds species, which belong to two orders, seven families and eight genera. Pycnonotus goiavier was the most frequent visitor. Eurya acuminata was more widely visited for foraging (71.47%), followed by perching (17.40%) and singing (11.13%). The birds mainly visited Eurya acuminata more often in the morning (54.16%) rather than afternoon (45.83%). The top of the canopy area was preferred (45.93%) rather than margin canopy (37.19%) and the center of the canopy (16.86%).Keywords : inventory of birds, Eurya acuminata, canopy

Abstract

Currently, cacao (Theobroma cacao, L.) farm is being developed in West Sumatra as one of the most potential estate crops. Less than 10 years, the crop had been developed up to 110,000 ha whereas it was only 25,000 ha in 2005. However there is none of the crops free from disease of immature fruit decay. The aim of this study was to identify the fungus which were collected on decay fruits of cocoa. Samples were collected from lowland and highland farms in West Sumatera by purposive sampling method. Fungus found on the decay fruit of cocoa in the lowland were Phytophthora palmivora, Fusarium sp and Aspergillus niger, while in highland were P. palmivora, Fusarium sp and Gloeosporium. Keywords: cacao, fungus identification, decay fruit.

Abstract

An experiment on in vitro root induction of Tetrastigma rafflesiae Miq. on Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium suplemented with several concentrations of Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) had been done from February to April 2013. The aims of this experiment was to determine physiological responses of T. rafflesiae’s shoot to the IBA on half strength media of MS for root induction stages. The experiment used a completely randomized design in seven treatments and four replications. The treatment was the addition of IBA in several concentration (i.e. 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5 and 3.0 mg/l). The results showed 0.5 mg/l suplemented IBA was more effective and efficient in root induction of shoot then other concentrations. It influenced the average number of roots (12.5 root/plantlet), the average length of root (4.98 cm) and the morphological of plantlets. The result indicated that plantlet of T. rafflesiae generated in in vitro have a higher possibility of artificial culture and give light for future conservation of Rafflesia. Keywords : Tetrastigma rafflesiae Miq., root induction, Indole-3-Butyric-acid.

Abstract

A study about cephalometry variations of three ethnic groups living in West Sumatra was conducted from May until August 2012. This study used survey method and purposive sampling technique. The measurements of cephalometry were taken from total of 150 individu samples with frontal photos from head-face. The result showed significant variations on head length, head width, upper facial height, bizygomatic breadth, eyes width, distance of endocathion, nose length, nose width, chin height, minimum frontal height and distance of stomion to menton. Based on statistic analysis, Nias, Minang and Mentawai ethnics showed different cephalic, facial, frontoparietal and nasalis type. Phenogram by UPGMA of three ethnic groups showed close relationship between Nias and Mentawai. Keywords : variation, cephalometry, ethnics, West Sumatra.

Abstract

The communities of small terrestrial mammals are known to be affected by the forest disturbances. The investigation of small terrestrial mammals’ community in had been conducted Mount Singgalang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Small terrestrial mammals were trapped in three different habitats; heavily disturbed, slightly disturbed and undisturbed forest. At each site, four transects were established using a total of 360 trap-night effort (120 trap-nights effort per site). We caught 37 individuals, consisted of 8 species which were included into 3 families and 3 orders. Composition and structure of the community was different among habitats. The highest diversity and abundance was found at slightly disturbed forest. In term of species composition, heavily disturbed forest was more similar to slightly disturbed forest than undisturbed forest. Crocidura neglecta and Maxomys surifer were the most tolerant species to the effect of forest disturbance. It is concluded that such differences among habitats in Mount Singgalangtend to have certain influences, although the significant difference was not found. Keywords: community, small terrestrial mammals, Mount Singgalang
