Abstract

The analysis of understory vegetation on Jati Emas (Tectona grandis L.) and Jati Putih (Gmelina arborea Roxb.) stand in Andalas University campus was conducted from May until July 2012. The objectives of this research were: to determine species composition, structure and diversity index of species. The method of this research was quadratic method with line 1 m x 1 m. The results were found 22 families, 43 species and 624 individuals. The highest importance value was dominated by Gleichenia linearis (29.7%) at Jati Emas Stand and Melastoma malabathricum (38.19%) at Jati Putih Stand. Diversity index (H’) had value were 2.88, 2.81, 2.46 and it’s categorizhed as middle diversity. The higher simillarity index was found between Jati Emas and Jati Putih stand (40.74%), next between Jati Emas and without Jati stand (24%) was found as middle simillarity index and the lower similliarity index was found between Jati Putih and without Jati stand (13.04%).Keywords: Understory, Tectona grandis, Gmelina arborea

Abstract

The study about population density and shell size distribution of clam Contradens sp. in Tanjung Mutiara Singkarak Lake, West Sumatra has been conducted on July 2013. This study used stratified purposive sampling method. Sampling site was decided into 3 locations based on human activities, 3 depth strata in each location; <5m, 5-10m and >10-15m. The clams were collected using “dauah” (traditional tool to catch shellfish), 3 sampling plots for each stratum. The result showed that the highest average population density (2.596 ind/m2) was found in location III followed location II (0.055 ind/m2) and location I (0.155 ind/m2). Based on strata, the highest average population density (1.941 ind/m2) was at >10-15m depth, there was no clam found at <5m depth. The largest clam concentrated  at >10-15m depth in location III (without human activity area) whereas small to medium clam concentrated at 5-10m depth. Keywords: clam, Contradens sp., population density, size distribution, Singkarak Lake.

Abstract

The research about the "Characterization of Natural Microflora From Cow Digestic Tract As Candidate For Cattle Feed Probiotics"  has been conducted from April to July 2013 in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Andalas, Padang. This study aimed to obtain isolates  and the character of each isolate as a candidate to cattle feed probiotics. This study used an experimental method and analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the bacteria from cow digestive tract were Cellulolytic (110x107cfu/g), Fermentative (85x107cfu/g),  Amylolytic (31x107cfu/g) and Proteolytic (28x107cfu/g) bacteria. Two of  the probiotic candidate were bacill and coccus, both of them were Gram-negative and catalase positive.

Abstract

The study about population density and size distribution of clam (Rectidens sp.) at Tanjung Mutiara Singkarak Lake, West Sumatra has been conducted from June to July 2013. The clams were collected using stratified purposive sampling method. Sampling site was decided into three location based on human activities and three depth strata in each location (<5m, 5-10m and >10-15m). The clams were collected using “dauah” (traditional tool to cath shellfish). There were 43 individu of clams that found at Tanjung Mutiara Singkarak Lake. The highest average population density were found at location III (1.444 ind./m2). The highest average population density were found at strata 3 (1.082 ind./m2). Size distribution of clam showed that at each location and strata have different size. The size of the clam between 24.37-88.54 mm. Medium size clam were the most frequent found in comparison with the small size and large clam. Small clam distributed at strata 2 (5-10 m) locations I and III and strata 3 (> 10-15 m) location III. While large clam only distributed at strata 3 (> 10-15 m) locations II and III. Size distribution of clam varied with the type of substrate and substrate particle. Keywords: clam, Rectidens sp., population density, size distribution

Abstract

The effect of mango ginger (Curcuma mangga Val.) ethanolic extract has been experimentally tested to β cell of alloxan-induced mice at the Laboratory Animal Development and Structure. The experiment aimed to identify the effectifity of the ethanolic extract to defend β cell from necrosis caused by the alloxan. The activity of the extract was evaluated by using control (A0 and A1) and treatments. All mice were induced by alloxan (150 mg/kg of body weight). One week later the extract was given orally to the mice at dose 200 (A2) 400 (A3) and 800 (A4) mg/kg of body weight (A4). The extract was given everyday for 21 days. Pancreas were isolated for each week. The observation of pancreas histology showed that extract 200 mg/kg body weight could decrease necrosis at Langerhans higher than the extract of 400 and 800 mg/kg of body weight. This results indicate that giving mango ginger extract at dose 200 mg/kg body weight could decrease β cell necrosis.Key words : mango ginger (Curcuma mangga Val.), β cell, alloxan, necrosis.

Abstract

The research on vegetation analysis of weed in palm oil plantation (Uncaria gambir (Hunter) Roxb) in Penurunan village, Nagari Kayu Gadang, Sutera, Pesisir Selatan has been conducted from February to April 2013 by using 1 x 1 m 20 plots of purposive quadrate method. The result showed that weed composition in gambir plantation consisted of  15 families, 28 genera and 31 spesies while Index diversity of weed was H’ = 2.54. Axonophus compressus has the highest SDR (Summed Dominance Ratio) 23.02% while Eleusine indica has the lowest SDR 0.40% (2 individuals) in gambir plantation. Keywords : Vegetation analysis, weed, gambir, quadrate method, plot

Abstract

This study aimed of to find out the effect of leaf extract and seed powder containing alkaloid which occured on the production process of nata de coco. An experiment was conducted using Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with factorial pattern. The result showed that the brewed extract of tea, coffee, chocolate affected the weight product of nata de coco. The brewed extract of green tea showed the best result on weight of the nata (24.66 g) which has a significant difference from the treatments of black tea, coffee powder, cocoa powder, coffee leaf, and chocolate leaf. The best dose of brewed extract in obtaining nata was 2 g/100 ml.Keywords : alkaloid, nata de coco, effect.

Abstract

Endophytic bacterium are important to produce antibiotic. We have experimentally studied zodia plant (Evodia suaveolens Scheff) in attempting to isolate and characterize the bacterium. We have also examined potentiality of each isolate to produce antibiotic. We obtained three a isolate of  endophytic bacterium that produce antibiotic compounds. Among three isolates, two could form high inhibition zone. MZS-01 formed 10.4 mm inhibition zone against Eschericia coli, while MZS-03 formed 6.96 mm inhibition zone against Staphylococcus aureus. We described the isolates MZS-01 and MZS-03 based on macroscopis and microscopis characteristic of colony  culture.

Abstract

A study on the earthworms (Oligochaeta) at Lembah Anai Nature Reserve, West Sumatera has been conducted from February to May, 2013. The purpose of this study was to identify earthworms species at the Nature Reserve. The earthworms were collected from different altitudinal levels ranged from 400 to 800 m above sea level using hand sorting method. There were three species of earthwoms found; Pontoscolex corethrurus (Glossoscolecidae), Pheretima posthuma and Megascolex kempi (Megascolecidae) these three species belong to sub order Neooligochaeta. All species were found at all altitudinal level. Keywords: Earthworm (Oligochaeta), Hand sorting, Lembah Anai
