Abstract

The number of Muslims in Bali has dramatically increased in the last decades. In addition to the high rate of migration of Muslims from other regions to Bali, the conversion of Balinese into Islam has triggered the growth of Muslim population in the island. This study aims to describe analytically the background and the process of Hindu conversion to Islam in Denpasar, Bali. The study also examines the pattern of interaction of the converts with their family, their previous congregation and with their new fellow Muslims. The data collection in this phenomenological study was gathered through observation, interviews with the converts, visits to the convert counseling and guidance centers and documentation. The study finds that there are various reasons for Hindu’s conversion to Islam. Each informant has distinct personal characters and comes from variegated social backgrounds. The first motivation of conversion is affection, followed by intellectual and transcendental impulses. Not all converts receive discrimination from their family. Only those who stem from the high caste may encounter disfavor from their family. However, the converts are easily accepted by their family and new community if they can make a fundamental contribution to the both sides.

Islam puts men and women in an equal position; what distinguishes them is their degree of pity. However, this egalitarian principle has not always been true in practice. Gender biases can still be found not only in the society in general but also in particular at school and in the textbooks used. This study is aimed to examine critically gender biases in the school textbooks especially on Islamic Religious Education books. The study analyzes four Islamic Education Textbooks published by four different publishers, namely Esis, Yudistira, Tiga Serangkai and Erlangga. The study’s methodological approach is inquiry qualitative and uses content analysis. The study demonstrates that the textbooks examined echo biases in the form of marginalization, subordination, work burden and stereotyping imposed on a particular gender. Male biases are present in most aspects of the book structure such as in the form of question, expression, narratives and illustration.

Abstract

Islam in Sunda has diverse local elements. One of them is ngadudukeun, a ritual performed to control rain. The ritual is conducted by Sundanese Warukaum living in Bogor regency that has the high rain volume. The study follows Geertz’s perspective on the interpretation of culture and aims to get a deep understanding of the meanings of this ritual tradition from the native point of view. The data were gathered through observation and interviews. This study reveals that the ngadudukeun ritual consists of three stages involving both local and religious practices. The first stage is called petungan or pitungan that uses local mantra of Ajisaka to figure out the right time or day for an event. The second and third is conducted during maleman mangkat and maleman rame led by religious leaders. The Sundanese in Bogor believe that the ritual has a fundamental base from the Islamic scriptures, the Qur’an and the Prophet Tradition. To them, the ritual thus does not deviate from religion because it is seen as a spiritual endeavor based on Islamic texts to sustain their physical efforts.

This article aims spesifically to discuss the experiences of Muhammadiyah and NU in eradicating corruption and upholding public integrity. Abstract

This qualitative research using phenomenological approach examines transcendental communication of the blind who lose sight in their adulthood. The research shows that one who loses sight during his/her adulthood will undergo a dramatic change not only in their outward biological and psychological aspects but also in their transcendental communication with God. Regarding transcendental communication, this study reveals three different models of attitudes of the blind. The first attitude begins with the emergence of spiritual awareness that consciously admits the self and God existence. The blindness stimulates a better change in the blind’s style and form of transcendental communication even though each respondent discloses a different pattern of change, resulting type “A” that represents a minimun change to type “F” that represents maximum change. Based on all dynamic of transcendental communication made by the respondents, the research underscores four models of religious identity of the blind; formal religious, temporal religious, religious and very religious. All these models represent distinct transcendental communication both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Abstract

One salient feature of the approach to the Qur’anic exegesis among Shi’i is concerned with the interpretation of the inner meaning (esoteric) of the Qur’an. This study discusses the argument of the esoteric exegesis in the work of Allamah al-Majlisiy, Bihâr al-Anwâr. He was an influential Muslim scholar in the era of Syah Sulayman and Syah Husayn of the Safawid. The purpose of the work was to disseminate Shi’i doctrine to the people. The work highlights the esoteric interpretation of Imam and therefore it was considered as the continuation of the Imam Ja’far esoteric tradition. The study demonstrates that one fundamental characters of the esoteric interpretation in the work is its concern on the proportional and balanced element between esoteric and exoteric interpretation. According to al-Majlisiy, the Qur’an contains both inner and outer meanings and dimensions. However, the knowledge about the inner and outer dimensions of the Qur’an exclusively belongs to Imam; none knows such dimensions except Imam. The main focus of al-Majlisiy esoteric interpretation are about leadership (imâmah) such as the authority of Imam, Imam as the heir and sole interpreter of the Qur’an, the Prophet family circle (ahl bayt) and the obligation to comply Imam. This kind of Shi’i interpretation enriches the tradition of the Qur’anic exegesis in Islam.

Abstract

This article discusses three main issues. First, symbolic construction of the hajj among the Bugis; Second, the interaction of social and cultural construction of the Bugis; and third the meaning of the hajj and its implication for the whole cultural system of the Bugis. Building on the theory of symbolic interaction, this qualitative research argues that the high number of hajj does not automatically relate to the religiosity of the people performing it. For the Bugis, the hajj embodies complex meanings which signify symbolic transformation of Bugis self-personality. The Bugis are excessively obsessed by the hajj’s symbols, such as clothe, attributes and a title attired and received after performing this ritual. To the Bugis, the hajj is a dream that they have envisioned since childhood. After they get married or reach thirty years old, the appeal to perform the hajj become stronger. The eagerness to conduct this ritual seems to be more tangible especially for unmarried women. By holding the title as Haji, one who has visited Mecca to do the hajj, the Bugis deserve two titles; religious as panrita (ulama) and cultural as to sugi (rich). Therefore, to the Bugis in Bone, the hajj escorts them to attain the highest personal transformation.

Abstract

Shifting paradigm and social labeling towards tuan guru in Lombok have commonly led to ambiguity and overlap. This is mainly caused by varied contributing factors such as social and religious status, knowledge, attitudes, teaching activity in Islamic boarding schools, preaching activities that one engage. Even political interest contribute to the changing predicate of tuan guru that is labeled to someone. As a result, this sacred social and religious predicate widens and may be used by one who has ideally not reached the status. No wonder, there are lots of tuan gurus. Considering this phenomena, this research aims at decribing normative discourse of the predicate of tuan guru and then to look at how this discourse is empirically debated among Sasaknese. The research employs sociological approach and uses inductivedescriptive analysis. The researh shows that one who has a predicate as a tuan guru should have deep knowledge, individual and social piety, charisma and is socialy accepted. This predicate also requires that one have performed pilgrimage, be able to read Islamic classical books, posses Islamic educational institution, and have a high social commitment to the society.

Abstract

Saadoe’ddin Djambek is one of the leading figures in the field of Islamic astronomy (Falak) in Indonesia. His thoughts scatter in many manuscripts. Djambek’s work has been influenced by medieval Muslim scholars in astronomy and this intellectual process greatly affects his thoughts. This study aims to describe Saadoe’ddin Djambek’s concept of takwim in Islamic lunar calendar (Hijriah). This research reveals that Saadoe’ddin has built his concepts of the beginning of Hijriah month on the holy Qur’an combined with modern astronomical calculation. He makes use of modern principles in astronomy to sustain his system of calculation of the lunar calendar. Whereas, the Quran and Hadith constitute his epistemological foundation. This method results the concept of calculating the beginning of new moon and the alteration of Hijriah month, the beginning of day and date of Hijriah called wujûd alhilâl. In his concept of takwim, he offers a solution to the problem regarding different calculation of the beginning of Hijriah month in a particular region. The concept of determining the beginning of the month and the takwim of Hijriah have strong epistemological foundation that result accuracy calculation. He also uses to some degree the principle of the unity of Muslim community (ukhuwah) in his calculation method and this helps reduce friction in determining the beginning of Islamic lunar calendar amongst Muslims.
