Abstract

In vitro studies were exploring eleutherine (Eleutherine americana) potential to be used as feed additive for poultry.  The eleutherine bulbs were extracted using four different organic solvents: methanol, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether and hexane.  The crude extracts were analyzed for their bioactive compounds, tested for anioxidant and antibacterial activity and tested for growth of non-pathogen bacteria. The results indicated that bioactives are indentified:phenol and tannin. Average of antioxidant activity were 33.74, 20.36, 15.14 and 1.98 ppm AEAC  for methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. Furthermore, average of inhibition growth for  pathogen bacteria of Escherichia coli was 5.94, 4.75, 4.56 and 4.44  mm  for  methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively, while inhibition for  Staphylococcus aureus was 5.37, 6.50, 5.37 and 5.18  mm for  methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. The extracts also have ability to enhance the gorwth of non-pathogen bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus. Average of bacteria growth improvement was 21.12, 28.57, 28.16 and 19.59 NTU for methanol, ethylacetate, diethylether and hexane, respectively. The presence of antioxidant and antibacterial activity and growth enhancer activity could be attributed to the bioactive and non digested carbohydrate content of the bulbs extracts.  Therefore, it  could be concluded that the bulbs of eleutherine extract is potential source for “feed additive” as phytobiotics as well as prebiotics.Key words: Eleutherine, Extract, Bioactive, Phytobiotics, Prebiotics

Abstract

One strategis to provide feed in developing rabbits in the dry areas is utilising forage that are able to survive in during dry season. This experiment was aimed to examine the use of different forages on water intake, feed intake and digestibility of local rabbit. The experiment employed  20 male local rabbits, consentrate feed 2% of live weight and forage ad libitum, metabolisme cages and also supporting equipments. The experiment design used was randomised block design, which consisted of 4 treatments and 5 replicates. The dietary treatments were P1 (MO) = Moringa oleifera, P2 (LL)= Leucaena leucocephala, P3 (DV)= Desmanthus virgatus, and P4 (TI)= Tamarindus indica. The result showed that  different forage affected very significantly (P<0.01) feed intake. However, treatment did not affect significantly (P>0,05) water intake and feed digestibility of local rabbit. It was concluded the best forage for local rabbit is Desmanthus virgatus.Key words: Drink water, Digestibility, Consumption, Forage, Local rabbit

Abstract

Set net catch operated in Mallasoro Bay is very fluctuating. The fluctuations strongly assumed related to te current profile in that area. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between current profile with the set net catch. It was applied the linier regression for assessing its relationship. Data was collected for 35 days in set net fishing ground in Mallasoro Bay, Jeneponto. The results indicated that current direction and velocity play an important role in controlling set net productivity with significance value is 0,000028. By individually test shown that current velocity is the most influential that potentially reduces 7.29 units of set net catch.Keyword: set net, current, fish capture

Abstract

Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) is a freshwater ornamental fish that has a potential both in the domestic market and international market (export). Some studies on biological aspects of the Siamese fighting fish have been conducted.  However, information on the embryonic development of the fighting fish is lack.  The study aims to determine the stage of embryonic development in fighting fish. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Tadulako University, Palu. The results showed that the development of fish embryo can be divided into several stages, including cleavage, morula, blastula, gastrula, and organogenesis. The egg of the fighting fish was hatch in 35 hours after fertilization. Key words: Betta splendens, fish egg, embryogenesis, and larvae

Abstract

Eel has economic value is a species of fish that are sold on the international market, Karnan containing vitamins and micronutrients are very high. The research objective was to determine the effect of silage by substitution of fish meal and eggs of snails (Pomacea canaliculata) to the growth of fingerling eels (Anguilla marmorata). This study was conducted from November 2014 - January 2015. Research laboratory housed in Agricultural Technology (THP) Tadulako University, Palu. The raw material for the manufacture of feed that is, fish silage, egg flour, bran flour, tapioca starch, vitamins and minerals. Feed is made in the form of fish paste. Eating in eel fingerlings that every day as much as 5-10% of the total weight of fish per day. Eat twice a day, morning and afternoon har. The study design completely randomized design (CRD), with 3 treatments and 6 replications. Treatment A: 90% + 10% egg fish silage flour; Treatment B: 80% + 20% egg fish silage flour; Treatment C: 70% + 30% egg fish silage flour. With the ever-dose comparisons between fish silage and flour (90: 10) (treatment A) can promote the growth, survival and feed efficiency was good. Key words: eggs, snails, growth, Anguilla marmorata

Abstract

Chicken meat is an animal product for bussines. The meat is consumed nearly everyday by human being. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics in animal feed produces a negative impact on both animal and human being, who consume animal product. As a traditional herbal, garlic has an active substance called allicin. This active substance can be used to improve performance and carcass quality of broilers. An experiment was conducted to study effect of garlic meal in the diet on cholesterol and carcass quality of broilers. A total of 100 day old chicks has used. A completely randomized design was adapted with 5 treatment and 4 raplicate cages of birds each. Differences every treatment were tested with Duncan’s multiple range test. Experimental diets used were : control diet (R0), 1.5% garlic meal (R1), 3% garlic meal (R2), 4.5% garlic meal (R3) and 6% garlic meal (R4). Feed and water were offered ad libitum, birds were kept for 42 days for performance and carcass quality data. Three birds from each cage were slangheered for measuring cholesterol. The result showed that treatment gave a significant effect (P<0.05) on meat cholesterol levels. However, feed intake, carcass percentage, carcass parts and abdominal fat was not significantly (P>0.05) affected by treatment R3 with 4.5% garlic meal produced the best result. In conclusion, the result of this study indicated that the use of garlic meal in the diet result in good cholesterol and carcass quality. Key words : Garlic, Cholesterol, Carcass Quality

Abstract

Sceletonema costatum is one of a live feed with a golden brown box shape with a relatively small size about 4-15 microns, and has a high nutrient content. The research objective was to study the effect of long exposure (photoperiod) to the density of Sceletonema costatum in laboratory scale. The research was conducted in October to November 2015, taking place at the Laboratory of Aquaculture, Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, University Tadulako, Palu. The study used completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments, (A) 12 light : 12 dark, (B) 14 light : 10 dark, (C) 16 light : 8 black, and (D) 18 light : 6 dark. The results showed the higher density of Sceletonema costatum cells are in treatment(C) 16 light : 8 dark as counted of 6.7 x 105 cells / ml.Keywords : Sceletonema costatum, Photoperiode, Density
