Abstract

Mining activities often leave behind degraded land requiring restoration and sustainable utilization. This study aims to (1) analyze the suitability of post-mining land for agriculture, (2) assess the socioeconomic conditions of surrounding communities, and (3) evaluate sustainability factors influencing post-mining land use. A land evaluation was conducted using a matching system, while socioeconomic data were collected through purposive sampling interviews across four post-mining sites in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The land suitability analysis identified three viable agricultural uses: rice cultivation (342.94 ha), corn production (209.51 ha), and pasture-raised cattle grazing (377.81 ha), with distribution across sites LP1, LP2, LP3, and LP4. The sustainability of each site was assessed across five dimensions: ecological, economic, social, legal, and infrastructure, using composite sustainability indices. Results showed varying sustainability levels: ecological (59.37, moderately sustainable), economic (80.35, highly sustainable), social (70.43, fairly sustainable), legal (57.42, moderately sustainable), and infrastructure (85.53, highly sustainable). These findings indicate that while economic and infrastructural conditions are favorable for sustainable land use, ecological and legal aspects require targeted improvements. The moderate social sustainability score suggests a need for greater community engagement and benefit-sharing mechanisms. These findings provide actionable insights for improving post-mining land use and promoting sustainable development in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Abstract

Hutan bakau Delta Niger di Nigeria telah mengalami peningkatan degradasi, karena bertahun-tahun eksplorasi minyak / polusi, urbanisasi dan ledakan populasi. Studi tentang kapasitas pemulihan alami mangrove dan kebutuhan remaja terbatas. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini meneliti hubungan antara regenerasi alami mangrove dan parameter sedimen di bagian barat Delta Niger. Penelitian ini dilakukan di empat lokasi (Agge, Burutu, Opuama, Kurutie) dan kontrol di Ifie. Dua puluh kuadrat berukuran 20m x 20m diletakkan di setiap lokasi. Abstract

Human health and well-being are affected by the quality of the environment in which an individual lives. Urban spaces must provide restorative experiences to support public mental health. This study aimed to identify visitor preferences for exciting views and stress-relieving features in urban parks. Using visitor-employed photography to capture direct experiences, the study analyzed geotagged photos to identify landscape views, classified restorative landscape elements, and evaluated their effect on urban park visitors. This research employed spatial analysis of photo distribution using QGIS, photo content analysis using Google Cloud Vision API, and assessment of restorative effect through the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS). The photo-taking hotspots were shaded areas with seating, featuring greenery, sculptures, activities, and landmarks. The results showed 2–3 hotspots with the highest photo density in the three parks. The Cloud Vision API classification results identified that the elements of a restorative landscape can be softscape, hardscape, and other factors. The results of the PRS questionnaire test showed that the three parks had a restorative effect on visitors (< 0.05), Sempur Park had the highest fascination (55.13) and compatibility (55.57) effects, and Heulang Park had the highest coherence effect (56.85) than other parks. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating shaded seating, greenery, and engaging features into urban park designs to enhance visitor health and well-being.

Abstract

Uncontrolled land use changes can lead to mismatches with designated spatial patterns, resulting in critical land issues such as erosion and flooding. Bogor Regency has undergone rapid land use transformations, particularly in agriculture, with significant shifts occurring between 1995 and 2001. This study evaluates land capability using a matching and scoring approach to determine its suitability concerning existing spatial patterns. Key factors such as slope, erosion hazards, and soil depth were analyzed to classify land into capability categories. The findings reveal six classes of land capability, ranging from Class II to VII, with Classes IV and VI being the most dominant. Spatial analysis indicates that a large portion of Bogor Regency's land cover aligns well with its land capability. Compatibility with designated spatial patterns is predominantly conditional, suggesting that some areas may require mitigation measures or adjustments for sustainable development. The conditional suitability of land capability with spatial patterns highlights the need for careful planning interventions. Decision-makers must consider land constraints and adopt adaptive land-use policies to mitigate risks such as erosion and flooding. Integrating land capability assessments into planning frameworks can enhance sustainable land management and minimize environmental degradation.

Abstract

The manufacturing industry in this research was a polyester-producing manufacturing industry generating polyester chips and polyester staple fiber. The production process used raw materials and ancillary materials. Every raw material that was processed would produce products and byproducts in the hazardous and toxic waste (HTW) category; in the form of Wastewater Treatment Plant sludge, diethylene glycol, residue from the laboratory test, incinerator ash, spin finish oil, bottles of chemical solutions, and contaminated rags. This research aimed to evaluate the implementation of the HTW management for the key activities based on the relevant regulations to prevent harm to human health and the environment. The implementation of the HTWs management activities was observed on site. The observations were then compared with the regulations, and their conformity was scored using a Likert Scale. The results of the evaluations, covering 5 key activities of the packaging and containment, collection, storing, transportation, and symbolling and labelling, gave the percentage of 90%, 91.70%, 96%, 100%, and 85.20%, respectively. The average conformity of the HTWs management with the regulations was 93% and included in the very good category. Improvements have still to be done by this industry to ensure their HTW management operates properly by reducing their wastes using the suitable methods, such as through raw material substitution, process modification to a more efficient process, and the use of environmentally friendly technology.

Abstract

Taman Hutan Raya Djuanda, yang ditetapkan pada tahun 1985 melalui Keputusan Presiden Republik Indonesia No. 3, merupakan Taman Hutan Raya pertama di Indonesia. Luas total Taman Hutan Raya Djuanda sebesar 528.393 hektar, merupakan taman hutan raya terluas di Provinsi Jawa Barat. Kondisi alam Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H Djuanda mendukung pemanfaatan wisata alam dan fasilitasnya untuk mengembangkan pendidikan lingkungan. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menilai keberlanjutan pengelolaan Taman Hutan Raya Djuanda terkait dengan empat pilar keberlanjutan yaitu ekologi, ekonomi, sosial budaya dan kelembagaan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan September hingga November 2023. Penilaian status keberlanjutan dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai dimensi ekologi sebesar 57,99% (cukup berkelanjutan), nilai dimensi ekonomi sebesar 74,20% (cukup berkelanjutan), nilai dimensi sosial budaya sebesar 32,48% (kurang berkelanjutan), dan nilai dimensi kelembagaan sebesar 52,80% (cukup berkelanjutan). Nilai keseluruhan status keberlanjutan Taman Hutan Raya Djuanda adalah 54,37% (cukup berkelanjutan). Dimensi sosial budaya menunjukkan nilai terendah dan tergolong kurang lestari, sedangkan dimensi ekonomi menunjukkan nilai tertinggi.

Abstract

Gunung Walat University Forest (GWUF) in Sukabumi, West Java, serves as a centre for training, education, and research in forestry. This research analyses the environmental comfort of GWUF, focusing on thermal comfort, visual aesthetics, and visitor perceptions related to their suitability in conducting ecotourism development to increase GWUF income in realizing sustainable forest management. Data was collected from November 2023 to February 2024 at three locations in the GWUF by measuring air temperature and humidity. Interviews were conducted with respondents experienced in landscape assessment to evaluate the aesthetic level of 10 objects in GWUF, and interviews with visitors on aspects of GWUF management and presence. The Thermal Humidity Index (THI), Scenic Beauty Estimation (SBE), and Likert scale analysis were also used. The results showed that the GWUF area was in a comfortable thermal condition. The value varied and became a new attraction, one of which was the beauty of the GWUF cave. Overall, visitors rated the air quality and natural beauty positively; however, there are some points to note regarding the availability of facilities and the accessibility of the site, highlighting areas for improvement in management.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems are vital for human livelihoods, but ongoing exploitation and natural disturbances have led to significant land use and cover changes. Therefore, this study aimed to identify trends regarding land cover (LC) changes in mangrove ecosystems using remote sensing. LC changes from 1988 to 2024, as observed using remote sensing techniques. Satellite imagery from Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, Landsat 8 OLI/TRIS, and Landsat 9 OLI/TRIS was analyzed using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), and a newly developed Combined Mangrove Recognition Index (CMRI). The results revealed four distinct phases of LC change over the study period (1988–2024), starting from 1988 to 1989, during which 12.14 ha of mangrove forest were documented. The second phase, spanning from 1990 to 1994, witnessed the onset of anthropogenic disturbances in pond area expansion, totaling 41.04 ha. The third phase, which spanned from 1995 to 1998, featured abrasion, resulting in 11.56 ha reduction in the area covered. Natural ecosystem recovery began in 1998 and continued with human intervention in the fourth phase from 2008 to 2024, resulting in an increase in mangrove forest LC by 62.57 ha. The study demonstrates the utility of remote sensing in documenting ecological changes over time and provides critical insights for sustainable coastal management and policymaking in vulnerable urban coastal zones.

Abstract

Food waste, a type of solid waste is a significant environmental concern, particularly in developing nations. The utilization of insects as bioconversion agents is becoming more significant due to rapid population expansion and the rise in organic waste on a global scale. The research on waste bioconversion utilizing insects is now limited to a few bug species and lacks long-term strategy and sustainability considerations. This study conducted bibliometric analysis and a comprehensive literature evaluation on studies related to waste bioconversion processes utilizing insect bioconversion agents in publications from 2013 to 2023. A bibliometric analysis will offer an overview of research and collaboration trends in this sector, while a systematic literature review (SLR) will provide summaries on selected issues from relevant works. Studies on waste bioconversion using insects have primarily focused on key factors such as the type of organic waste, the rate of waste reduction achieved, the formulation of substrates tailored to insect nutritional needs, and the downstream utilization of insect biomass as feed or for energy production (biogas, biodiesel, and biomass fuel). Most of the existing research centers on the Black Soldier Fly (169 publications), which has demonstrated high efficiency in reducing organic waste. This concentration on BSF highlights a research gap and potential opportunities for investigating other insect species like crickets, mealworms that may offer different advantages in specific waste types or environmental conditions.

Abstract

Forest and land fires have become an annual occurrence in South Papua Province over the past decade, with Mappi District identified as a fire-prone hotspot. This study analyzes hotspot trends and dynamics from 2012 to 2021 and estimates burned areas using Terra/Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)satellite data and ArcMap 10.8. The highest number of hotspots was recorded in 2015 (3,879), with 36.5% occurring on peatland and 63.5% on mineral soils. A historical hotspot analysis pinpoints the prevalence of fire incidents between July and October, highlighting the necessity for intensified prevention measures before July. Furthermore, a significant linear regression is established between annual hotspot numbers and rainfall in Mappi District (p-value = 0.006), signifying the impact of climatic factors on fire occurrences. The largest burned area, estimated at 134,051.74 hectares, also occurred in 2015, coinciding with a strong El Niño event. More importantly, these fires occurred not only on mineral soil but also on peatland areas. Hence, this study highlights the critical need to prioritize comprehensive forest and land fire management in Mappi District, South Papua Province.
