Abstract

The religious tolerance and harmony is something necessary to develop due to the need of global security and peace today. For this purpose, all religions have to be fairly “tolerant” to others. Islam as a revealed religion, whatever its motive, is often perceived and accused as the religion of intolerance and violence. Some political and ideological questions, for example raised to this context: "Can Islamic faith tolerate other faiths, religions or groups?”, What’s actually the Islamic teachings on tolerance and peace or harmony?” and the likes. This article attempts to unpack and elaborate of how far at Qur’an –as the first and primary source of Islam– has a teaching on tolerance and peace. Using a hermeneutical approach the writer understands and analyses what is actually taught by al Quran on the concepts and practices of the tolerance. Based on the analysis, he highlights any conclusions of which al-Qur’an (Islam) teaches the followers to respect and implement the doctrine of tolerance and peace. The Muslim world is imperatively to tolerate others, or respect the differences for strengthening the world security and peaceful life amongst nationwide.

Abstract

This paper examines the use of social, religious and cultural heritage for community building and mosque participation by Indonesian Muslim communities in New York City and its impact on women’s leadership in al-Hikmah mosque and their production of moral agency and pious self in the mosque setting. I argue that Indonesian Muslim women in AI-Hikmah mosque has more leadership capacity due to the cultural heritage of Indonesian Islam and the complementary status of women in their communities. In this paper, I will, first, discuss how the cultural heritage of a mosque along with its patriarchal, masculine leadership influences womens treatment. I will, secondly, examine how female authority is produced within the enmeshed patriarchal leadership, the heritage of Indonesian values. and masculine mosque cultures. In particular, I will discuss how womens religious and social activities generate empirical characters that shape the performance of female moral agency and the cultivation of the pious self. I will, finnally, analyze a pattern of female authority in the mosque and the way in which women construct their authority as leaders in the mosque. Throughout the paper, I draw parallels between female authority in AI-Hikmah mosque and the social and cultural practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

Sufis in Aceh, historically, had shown its real action in their daily life in relation to both vertical and horizontal. For vertical relations, the followers performed any Sufi practice leading them to their God. For horizontal relationship, they protected and defended their society and state by performing jihad against the Dutch as colonizers and infidels for them. There are at Ieast three factors influenced Sufis actions to be more attractive. First, the condition of Acehnese sultanate became weak. Second, the Dutch seemed eagerly to expand their colonial territory to Aceh. Third, the Acehnese had already kept in touch with other Muslims in Arabia since the Islam coming to this area. This article elaborates in detail on this matter by using primary sources from manuscripts and archives. Besides, secondary sources are also referred for comperation.

Abstract

This article is about Hajj transportation of Netherland Indies in during the years of 1910-1940. The focus of this article is the mechanism of the Hajj transportation and its significance since eighteenth century. It is based on that historical phmomenon, that this paper will examine the hajj transportation in the past related to regulation and problem and why it was important to control hajj ship transportation by using archives and authorities report as main sources and other secondary sources. Historically, since eighteenth century, even until today, going to hajj or pilgrimage was very interesting and attractive for native Muslim in Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia), especially for gaining religious requirement, social pride and Islamic ideas. The phenomenon can be seen from the increase and the stable number of the pilgrims from Indonesia which had attracted much interest from many parts of stake holders such as from Hijaz (Arabian government). In relation to that, it is worth noting that ship was an important transport to convey pilgrim from and to Indonesia and thus, business of hajj transportation become a field of contention between state authority and private ship businesses. It is based on that historical phenomenon, that this paper will examine the hajj transportation in the past related to regulation and problems and why it was important to control hajj ship transportation by using archives and authorities report as main sources and other secondary sources. Hajj transportation was a profitable business (even until today) that increased competition among British, Malay, Arabic, and Dutch shipping companies. Completion and regulation from ships and authority did not give better services for native pilgrims besides poor condition, discomfort and suffering of pilgrimage. However, hajj transportation had to be controlled, especially to restrain problems of moekimans and movement ideas from Hijaz.

Abstract

AbstractProphet Tradition (hadith) is the second main source in Islam. Unlike Koran that has completely validated as revelation, meanwhile hadith must be examined its validation of trasmission and matan. Therefore, problematic hadith  appeared, in transmission or matan. Especially, the problematic hadith in wich its matan contradicted, that called ‘musykil al-hadits’ or ‘mukhtalaf al-hadits’. Mukhtalaf al-Hadith, appearly, its matan contradicted with Koran, other equal hadith, axioma or reality. So, Mukhtalaf al-Hadits  is more debatable. Mu’tazila who representative of Rasionalits, rejected existence of mukhtalaf al-hadits as source of religion. Otherwise, Tradisionist (Ahl Hadīts) accepted it as source of religion, when its transmission comfirmed/validated. To realease contradiction of mukhtalaf hadits matan, Ibnu Qutayba, one of Muhaddits used  many rational methods; analogy (qiyās ushūlī) and syllogism (qiyās manthiqī). This research used content analysis with some approaches; Jurisprudence, Logic, Ushul Fiqh.

Abstract

This paper elaborates more about the worldview which fulfill Ulama and Muslim scholars’ mind in the archipelago at the past time, especially in Aceh by reviewing books and classics legacy. There are at least two books that became stressing of the study, i.e. Taj al-Mulk a-Murashsha bi Anwai al-Durar wa al-Manzhumat authored by Abbas Al-Asyi and Jamu Jawami al-Mushannafat (Eight Books), edited by Ismail Al-Asyi. By using the historical-philological approach, this paper tries to find and identify the Aceh classic manuscripts written around the XVIII and XIX century AD associated with traditions and Ulama’s worldview two centuries ago which related to the science and knowledge. Even though Muslim scholars and Ulama in Aceh at the past time, mostly gave greater focus and attention on religious science such as fiqh (Islamic law) and tasawuf (Sufism) as both well known and shown in the work of Ar-Raniry and Fansuri, but basically they had an integrated worldview of Islamic science without fragmented. Although modernism and secularism which constructed in the West and then developed and introduced to the East, have been sorting and dichotomizing of science, but through the past work of Ulama Aceh which have huge contribution to the development of science paradigm in the archipelago, showed that there is very good and harmonious relationship between the various knowledge, religion and science.
