Abstract

This paper presents a semantic and symbolic analysis of the concept and presentation of the concept of Islam Nusantara and the ways in which it evokes meaning and emotion to counter trans-national violent extremist movements including al-Qaeda and ISIS, based on Salafi-Wahhabi ideologies. It is based on a frame based content analysis of religious and political themes ofIslam Nusantra. I focus primarily on two films produced by Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) to promote this concept: the near feature length (83 minutes)The Blessing of Islam Nusantara (Oceans of Revelation: Islam as a Blessing for All Creation) and the much shorter (8 minutes) Launching the Film The Blessing Islam Nusantara. The first draws on elements of Sufism, Javanese and to a lesser extent other Indonesian cultures to construct a vision of Islam directly countering that of both violent and non-violent Salafi-Wahhabi extremists. The second promotes the film and Ansor’s (the NU youth organization) potential for combatting violent extremism. Theoretically, I rely on insights by Goffman’s observations concerning the ways in which semantic frames, and more specifically reframing, can alter dominance hierarchies in discourse systems and Sperber’s demonstration that symbolization is a cognitive process that evokes as well as communicates meaning and emotion.

Abstract

This paper aims to locate the research potential and necessity of monuments within the study of archaeology and epigraphy. Leading to that it is important first to give the backgrounds and development of the two disciplines  in this country. Thus, some brief presentations of the more recent works will hopefully serve the purpose. From here, the paper will focus on the current findings of the research on Islamic monuments. Unlike archaeological works, monuments will be more democratic as they include diverse builders, beyond the formal and the powerful.Atcheology

Abstract

This paper Is about the dynamic of discourse between the so called Transnational ideologies and Religious local wisdom. The reason this discourse is necessary to understand well in relation to religious life in Indonesia is because some transnational ideologies have succeeded in attracting the attention of some Islamic people. This is a paper with an anthropological approach. Thus, the description is based on phenomenological observation. This paper will look at some transnational ideologies offerings that attracted some Islamic historical experiences which had built the grandour of Islamic civilization as the nostalgia to back up their offer. One of the example is the idea of Khilafah which is propagated by the so called Hizbut Tahrir. Another is the Jihad movement which is propagated by for instance ISIS and previously al Qaida. This paper will analyze the reasons why some Islamic people are very interested in these movements while what transnational ideologies offer is actually the solidarity to be Muslims based on the bad situation of the Middle East. However, these transnational movements have gain their supporters in the name of Islamic solidarity based on the historical example of Islamic golden age. Therefore, the ideas offered is constructing new Islamic world order based on Islamic teachings and form in accord with their framework and paradigm. The New Islamic World order will leash the suffer of Islamic people from unjust treatment the so called western domination. In relation to this in Indonesian case, it is important to consider religious local wisdom as a filter to this propagation. It is because religious local wisdom will give deeper understanding to the people how to understand the teaching of their religion based on the context of their life and their local religious heritage without deviating from the essence of religion.

Abstract

This paper describes several forms of therapy for spiritual well-being and physical health based on the values of sufism (tasawwuf) and spiritual exercise (riyadhah). The variety of methods contained in these therapeutic forms can be generally found within sufism in theory, but not specifically in practice. These practical experiences is thus part of a ‘local wisdom’ (kearifan lokal) tradition deserving of study and research. Thus far, the therapies have been performed with patients who suffer from physical ailments such as heart disease, cholesterol excess, hypertension, gout, and kidney disorder, as well spiritual illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety, and phobias. From the perspective of sufism, these conditions appear because of the sinful actions committed by the sufferers. These sins disturb or trouble the sufferers’ soul, causing it to acquire negative traits, blocking its ‘link’ to God who is the Source of Peace, Happiness, and Well-being (as-Salam). The ‘further’ a person is from God, the ‘nearer’ the person is to problems and disease, and vice-versa. To attain physical and spiritual well-being is to become closer to God.In practice, to cure illnesses, the therapies take the following forms: Rasa Ruhani (Spiritual Sensation), Shalat and Thuma’ninah (Prayer with Concentration), and Terapi Nafas (Breathing Therapy).

Abstract

There are more than a hundred manuscripts that were found in Sumenep Madura and were digitized by a research team from the Office of Religious Research and Development Ministry of Religious Affairs, Semarang Indonesia. That research focused on the identification and digitalization on those manuscripts; however, that research has not made further analysis on the content. Therefore, this paper examines the content of those manuscripts and classifies them into category based on the discipline. In addition, this essay looks at how these manuscripts related to pesantren and its ulama (kyai/Muslim scholars) in Sumenep Madura. This study uses a library research and content analysis method. The result shows that from the 107 digitized manuscripts, there are more than 107 texts embedded in those manuscripts, since some of the manuscripts are a compilation book.  The majority of those manuscripts consist of fiqh texts (64 texts), followed by tauhid/theology (46 texts), tasawuf/mysticism (8 texts), Qur’an (3 manuscripts), Arabic grammar and linguistic (6 texts), and the rests are texts about do’a, Javanese horoscope and history. All of those texts are written in an Arabic letter and used various languages such as Arabic, Javanese and Madurese. Some of those manuscripts are collection of ulama and pesantren in that area. These ulama and pesantren received their manuscripts from their parents and preserved it until now. Indeed, those manuscripts can be recognized as the legacy of pesantren and its ulama in Sumenep Madura.  In the context of Sumenep Madura, ulama/kyai and pesantren play significant roles in the development of Islam since they are the center of the society.
