Abstract

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical substance in the form of monomers which is commonly used as plastic constituents. BPA is often found in household appliances, food and beverage containers, and in dental sealants and acrylic base dentures. BPA can contaminate or enter the human body mostly through oral route or swallowed along with food consumed. It is known that BPA exposure through the oral route can cause several diseases, and one of them is endocrine and metabolic problems, which is Diabetes Mellitus. This study was to analyze the decrease of insulin levels in the liver of male Wistar rats after being exposed by BPA. 18 adult male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups. Group I (control 1) was not given any treatment, only acclimatized for 7 days. Group II (control 2) was treated with sterile aquadest orally for 28 days. Group III (treatment group) was given oral BPA treatment with a dose of 20 mg / kg body weight for 28 days. After sacrificed, the hepar was homogenated and the insulin level was determined by ELISA. Data were analyzed with One Way Anova test and LSD test. Bisphenol-A (BPA) with a dose of 20 mg/kgBB exposed for 28 days can reduce on hepar insulin levels in adult male Wistar rats.

Abstract

The antioxidant activity and polysaccharide composition of seaweed is influenced by species (red, green and brown seaweed), geographical conditions, extraction methods, solvents, temperature and the length of time of extraction. The purpose of this study was to known the total polysaccharide and antioxidant activity in red, green and brown seaweed extracts from Jangkar Situbondo beach. Method. The study was conducted on red, green and brown seaweed extracted with ethanol and water to determine total polysaccharides. Antioxidant analysis uses the method 2,2-diphenyl1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Total polysaccharide and antioxidant activity were observed statistically using two-way ANOVA. The results of this study show that the polysaccharide content in seaweed water extract was significantly higher than ethanol extract, especially in brown seaweed. Seaweed water extracts showed higher antioxidant activity than ethanol extracts. The antioxidant activity of brown seaweed was significantly higher than that of green and red seaweed. Conclusion. Seaweeds have high antioxidant activity in water extracts. Brown seaweed water extract contains high polysaccharides than green and red seaweed. Antioxidant activity in brown seaweed is also higher than in green and red seaweed.

Abstract

The advantages of Nanohybrid composite resin are they have a smooth surface and greater strength, also minimal shrinkage. The disadvantages of composite resin are the color changes extrinsically and intrinsically. The color is changing extrinsically because of the dyes which attached to the surface of the composite resin and the color is changing intrinsically due to oxidation of monomers. Pempek and turmeric-tamarind herbal drink (jamu) are kind of foods and beverages that are very popular among Indonesian people, both of them are causing discoloration on the surface of the composite resin. The objective was to identify the difference composite resin color change after soaking in sweet and sour sauce (cuko pempek) and turmeric-tamarind herbal drink. This study was experimental laboratory research with pre-test and post-test research design. The samples were 32 pieces of Nanohybrid composite resin with the size of 10 x 2 mm. 16 samples of each test were soaked in 5 ml “cuko pempek” and turmeric-tamarind herbal drink in 37 0 C temperature in 7 days. The color change was measured using spechtrophotometer (UV-2401 PC). Results: There are differences between Nanohybrid composite resin surface color change which were soaked in “cuko pempek” and turmeric-tamarind herbal drink which marked in an average change of dE*ab “cuko pempek” (4.7244) and turmeric and tamarind herbal drink (39.1944). The results of independent T-Test also showed a significant color change that is p = 0,000 (p <0.05). This study concluded that there were differences between Nanohybrid composite resin surface color change which are soaked in “cuko pempek” and turmeric-tamarind herbal drink.

Abstract

Denture stomatitis is inflammation of the oral mucosa in contact with the denture base caused by the fungus Candida albicans. Denture stomatitis can be prevented by cleaning the dentures either mechanically or chemically. Mangosteen peel extract has been shown to inhibit the growth of C. albicans, but its effectiveness as a denture cleaning agent needs to be improved. One way to increase effectiveness is by combining chemical cleansing and mechanical cleansing through effervescent tablets. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of mangosteen peel extract effervescent tablets as an acrylic denture cleaner against C. albicans. Previously, the effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract were made with concentrations of 30% and 60%. Heat cured acrylic resin samples were incubated into a test tube containing C. albicans suspension for 24 hours at 37oC. Furthermore, the samples were immersed in effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract for 15 and 30 minutes. The number of C. albicans cells was counted using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that there was a significant reduction in the number of C. albicans cells attached to the plate surface after immersion in 30% and 60% effervescent tablets of mangosteen peel extract (p <0.05). Mangosteen peel extract effervescent tablets 60% more decreased the number of C. albicans cells. The duration of immersion did not show significantly different results (p> 0.05). Effervescent tablets of 60% concentration of mangosteen peel extract soaked for 15 minutes were the most effective as an acrylic resin denture cleaner against C. albicans.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that can occur genetically and clinically, including heterogeneous with manifestations in the form of loss of tolerance for carbohydrates. One of the complications of diabetes mellitus in the field of dentistry is oral diabetes including dry mouth, gingivitis, calculus, alveolar bone resorption, and periodontitis. Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the tooth supporting tissue caused by a particular group of microorganisms usually derived from dental plaque which can result in the progressive destruction of the periodontal connective tissue and alveolar bone with pocket formation, recession, or both. This case report is to study the management of chronic periodontitis in DM sufferers. The 52-year-old female patient came with complaints of missing and perforated back teeth wanting treatment. The patient has a history of diabetes. The incidence of periodontitis in DM has a greater incidence rate, therefore the existence of glycemic control plays an important role in preventing any deterioration.
