Abstract

North Borneo has always been the object of international interests and politics. This situation is the effect of socio-demographic plurality that led to theabsence of a cohesive socio-political identity that can unite them together. Thisstudy aims to analyze the social demographic history of the people of NorthBorneo (Kalimantan) in the 19th and 20th centuries to understand thecomplex geopolitics in the region during the decolonialisation process in thepost-Second World War. Using a literature review, there are some pointsconcluded, first, the Malay Sultanate of Brunei had dominated the politicalstructure of the area that influenced the foundation of the Malay social systemin North Borneo for the following centuries. Second, the colonial project ofJames Brooke changed the social order in North Borneo with the significantpresence of non-Malay groups such as the Chinese until the mid-20th century.Third, the Japanese occupation during the Second World War had broughtnationalism among the natives. This spirit had led to an attitude ofethnonationalism that makes it was challenging to build a cohesive nationalidentity among different ethnic groups there. Fourth, after the war, regionalconflicts due to the Cold War triggered differences in political systems amongthe new states that gained independence

Abstract

Religious populism has strong and profound influence in Indonesia. Itchallenges the rational foundation of the democratic structure of theIndonesian Politics. This populist political movement utilizes religiouslanguage and symbols as their language of political articulation, negotiation, and contestation, which then occupies the real and virtual public sphere ofthe politics of Indonesia. Therefore, this use of religious language andsymbols has placed democratic system in a serious risk. This critical study isintended to investigate the disadvantages of the use of religious language andsymbols in the political arena in Indonesia. I will employ Paul Ricour’sthoughts in his writing, The Fragility of Political Language, as a lens ofanalysis for that phenomenon. Through that analysis I argue that the use ofreligious language and symbols in political discourse contradicts theprovisional character of political language in democratic political settings. Isuggest, therefore, the reenactment of the constitutional and rationalfoundation of democratic structure of Politics in Indonesia is seriouslyrequired.

Abstract

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) takes effect on state management inIndonesia. Good crisis management is necessary to mitigate COVID-19. Thisresearch uses Beland ‘s conceptual framework on politics of insecurity and itsimplementation on the state's management crisis process, especially on howthe state protects its citizens towards non-traditional threads whileperforming political accountability. The 2020 Simultaneous RegionalElection (Pilkada) during pandemic is positioned as a case study, especiallyon how policy conflicts and calculation of benefits-risks occur. It has a pivotalrole in establishing perception of collective thread. In the case of 2020Simultaneous Regional Election, conflict in policy creates social anxiety andpolitical tension caused by a health crisis. This research finds that thegovernment (de) politicized the 2020 Simultaneous Regional Elections byusing a repertoire of types of strategies, i.e: avoiding blame and claimingcredit, which were carefully compiled and implemented in a specific frame.

Semarang City is the first city in Indonesia to be selected in the 100Resilient Cities (100 RC) Program. This position raises the hope that thiscity has more potential than other cities to prevent and control the spread ofCovid-19. The policies pursued through Restrictions on CommunityActivities and the Candi Hebat Siaga Village Program have not yet beenoptimal in breaking the chain of Covid-19 spread. Themost prominent factor found in this study is the weak resilience of localculture concerning the prevention and control of Covid-19. The national economycontracted by 5.32 percent (y-o-y) and the economy of East Java contracted5.90 percent (y-o-y) in the second quarter of 2020. Even so, there are severaleconomic sectors that still have good performance and have contributedgreatly to East Java's Gross Regional Domestic Product.
