Abstract

Social media over the years lately had shaped the language shifting or code mixing in global contexts.  This qualitative research aimed to unravel the intergenerational language shifting in profanity usage between millennials and generation-Z; the corpus about profanity words uttered by both, reasons for the usage of profanity words, and how this research perceived the intergenerational shifting of profanity words under the paradigm of sociolinguistics point of view. This research deployed open-ended surveys as primary instrument to gather profanity words used by both generations, including their reasonings for using them. Participants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure relevant representations from two different generations. The respondents consisted of 20 Gen-Z English-major students from various universities, and 9 Millennial English lecturers. They were recruited using institutional networks and online survey distribution. This technique was required because it assisted the researchers to target participants with related linguistics contexts and generational characteristics. The results indicated that gen-Z favorite profanity words in social media usage in recent years were cok or jancok, and it was due to the socio-cultural reasons behind it. Contrastively, the millennials stated that the socio-cultural and linguistics were the reasons regarding their favored word which was fuck. Through document analysis, the researchers perceived that Gen-Z’s shifting preferences for profanity words were driven by the social-cultural interaction , and  FOMO (fear of missing out) as they seek peer acceptance  and a heightened sense of belongings. In contrast, the millennials preferences were primarily to express their sense of group solidarity without concerns about social exclusion or ostracism. Although Gen-Z uttered profanity words to express themselves, the researchers highlighted that both generations feared feeling of remorse and potential consequences of using such language. Therefore, the researchers perceived that intergenerational shifting of profanity reflected a complex phenomenon that encompassed sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics frameworks

Abstract

This research aims to critically analyze a news article discussing the Mayor of Himeji's proposal to increase entry fees for foreign tourists visiting Himeji Castle using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model. The study's significance lies in understanding how media discourse shapes public perception and policy decisions regarding tourism and heritage preservation. The methodology involves three levels of analysis: textual, discursive practice, and social practice. The results indicate that the media plays a crucial role in framing policy debates and influencing public opinion. The textual analysis reveals strategic language choices that frame the fee increase as a necessary measure for sustainable tourism and heritage preservation. Discursive practice analysis shows how the article's production context and use of authoritative quotes lend credibility to the policy while highlighting a bias by omitting diverse perspectives. The social practice analysis situates the discourse within broader socio-economic and political contexts, emphasizing the tension between economic benefits and cultural preservation. The study underscores the need for sustainable tourism practices that balance local and global interests and contribute to preserving cultural heritage sites

Abstract

This study explores paragraph writing instructional materials based on students’ needs analysis in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The purpose of this study is to identify students’ learning needs and perceptions of existing paragraph writing materials, particularly in developing Major Supporting Sentences (MASS) and Minor Supporting Sentences (MISS). Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to capture both quantitative and qualitative perspectives on students’ learning experiences. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 29, while the qualitative interview data were examined using NVivo version 11 to identify emerging themes related to students’ instructional needs. The findings reveal that students perceive the instructional materials as generally effective in providing clear explanations and structured exercises to support paragraph writing. However, the needs analysis also indicates several areas requiring improvement, including the limited variety of examples, insufficient practical writing exercises, and the lack of supplementary learning resources such as multimedia tools. These unmet needs suggest that the current materials do not fully accommodate students’ diverse learning preferences. The study concludes that needs-based refinement of paragraph writing instructional materials that is by incorporating more interactive elements, authentic examples, and additional learning supports can enhance EFL students’ paragraph writing competence and overall language development

Abstract

Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programs have an important role in strengthening teacher competence and enhancing education quality. However, in Indonesia, English language teachers continue to face challenges that can impede their professional development as teachers. This study aims to investigate EFL teachers’ challenges in pursuing their teacher professional development and to propose a model design that corresponds to the challenges. This study employed a systematic review of 30 journal articles published between 2018 and 2025 used to identify and analyze the challenges experienced by teachers. Guided by the theory of practice architectures, the findings reveal three major categories of challenges: cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political. These findings highlight the importance of designing TPD that is relevant to teachers’ socio-cultural and material-economic conditions, integrates the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, and promotes teacher motivation. Based on the findings, the study proposes integrating the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework and the L-VE (Localisation, Valuableness, and Engagingness) model to improve the quality and sustainability of TPD programs in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study employs a conversation analysis, an approach rooted in ethnomethodology, to investigate how power dynamics are manifested in the speech patterns and interactional actions between teachers and students during English-language classroom discussions. The research, naturally qualitative, specifically examines two crucial conversational mechanisms: pauses, interruptions, and corrections to uncover the underlying social actions and power practices embedded within the turn-taking structure of these pedagogical interactions. By adopting an emic CA perspective, the study investigates two classroom conversations where two teachers were teaching speaking classes where fluency and accuracy are the pinnacle of the instructional goals. This study aims to gain insights into how the participants navigate and exercise power through the collaborative construction of meaning, which is central to the instructional objectives of the classroom discourse. The investigation of gaps and overlaps uncovered how both teachers and students exercise and navigate power dynamics through their verbal exchanges. The findings indicate that classroom discourse represents a multifaceted, collaborative process involving the dynamic interplay of power relations displaying non-conventional mode where students are empowered to express their participative roles. The observed gaps and overlaps in their turn-taking illustrate their cooperative efforts to construct meaning, reflecting their collective pursuit of instructional objectives

Abstract

This cultural studies research addresses an environmental issue by examining the role of environmental culture on shaping gendered consumer perceptions regarding sustainable beverage packaging in Indonesia SMEs. This study specifically investigates whether gender has influence on four dimensions of consumer perceptions, including beverage packaging in Indonesian SMEs, particularly four dimensions - Environmental Impact (EI), Price and Willingness to Buy (PRICE), Access, Impact and Future (AIF), as well as Perceived Quality (QUAL). This study draws from Environmental Culture Theory and the Value-Belief-Norm framework to explain the gendered perspectives. There are 384 respondents with random sampling technique from Indonesian consumers as the sample of this research. The data is gathered via online questionnaire and independent sample t-test is used as the main data analysis technique. The finding shows that three of four dimensions are found to have significant differences based on gender. Female respondents are found to have higher willingness to pay for sustainable packaging (PRICE), greater optimism and perception toward access, impact and future (AIF), as well as stronger association for perceived quality and sustainable packaging (QUAL). However, no significant difference is found regarding EI which shows that both male and female respondents have strong awareness regarding environmental benefits of sustainable packaging. Overall, the finding supports the Gendered Environmental Culture perspective where social norms, beliefs, and roles are shaping stronger women’s pro-environmental behavior and perceptions

Abstract

This study explores how Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approaches are adapted to support innovative English Language Teaching (ELT) practices within the framework of the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia. It also investigates the challenges English teachers face in implementing the curriculum, how they perceive and apply CLT-based methods in relation to its student-centered, competency-based orientation, and how students perceive English language learning under the Merdeka Curriculum. Employing a qualitative research design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with 20 English teachers across four provinces, and 15 students of secondary school. Data were analyzed using an interactive model by (Miles at al., 2014) and which include three main components: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification, and inductive coding approach to identify recurring pedagogical patterns, contextual adaptations, and teacher/student perspectives. Findings reveal that teachers decontextualize CLT through four key strategies: localizing communicative tasks, integrating project- and inquiry-based learning, redefining teacher roles, and utilizing low-tech digital tools. However, systemic and classroom-level challenges persist, including limited curriculum understanding, insufficient professional development, and unequal access to resources, assessment misalignment, and classroom management difficulties. While teachers generally perceive CLT as compatible with Merdeka’s aims, its implementation remains partial due to institutional and logistical constraints. Student perceptions indicate that many enjoy communicative, interactive, and project-based learning more than traditional methods. However, some experience anxiety due to limited English skills and lack of familiarity with student-centered activities. The study implies that successful implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum requires not only curricular reform but also continuous teacher support, student readiness programs, and the development of contextually appropriate assessment practices
