Abstract

Children's literature often serves as a tool for conveying complex phenomena, and one such phenomenon is the solar eclipse. While lunar eclipses have been a recurring theme in children's literature, solar eclipses have received less attention in this context. Nevertheless, in the wake of the remarkable total solar eclipse in the United States in 2017, certain children's literary works have been popular because of the use of the solar eclipse as a central theme. Noteworthy examples include The Total Solar Eclipse of Nestor Lopez by Andrea Cuevas and Every Soul A Star by Wendy Mass, both narrate tales set against the backdrop of a solar eclipse. This study examines the role played by the solar eclipse in character development and the incorporation of mythical elements within these selected novels by employing David Leeming's theory of myth, through a close reading. This study demonstrates how the solar eclipse symbolizes character growth, fostering enhanced self-confidence and self-acceptance, thereby reflecting the mythological notion that solar eclipses possess transformative potential. Furthermore, these novels encompass myths such as the act of biting during a solar eclipse, the transformation, the rituals during the eclipse, and the euphoria of the solar eclipse. However, this study also reveals instances of misinterpretation of these myths, thereby highlighting potential issues of cultural appropriation, which may contribute to children's misunderstanding.

Abstract

Speaking in good manner is highly advised in Islamic teaching, but this notion had been challenged by socio-cultural values of the kinds if profanity words circulating among Muslim students. As qualitative research, this research aimed to investigate the discourses related to the use of profanity words among Muslim students from the perspective of the Dialectical-Relational Approach (DRA). The first was to discover the most frequent profanity words uttered by Muslim students, the reasons for using profanity words which were classified as propositional and non-propositional, and how DRA perceived the use of profanity words influenced their identity as Muslim. In this research, a questionnaire was chosen as the primary instrument, which consisted of a set of profanity words by Chirs Kirk, and the respondents’ reasoning for using profanity words. The respondents were 14 students from a private Islamic-based university in Indonesia. The result had shown that the students chose two profanity words as the most popular: shit and fuck. Meanwhile, the most dominant reason for using profanity words was to relieve tension which belonged to the non-propositional aspect. DRA perceived the complexity of profanity words among Muslim students and  the use of profanity words emphasized the socio-cultural aspect of language, yet, Islamic teaching encouraged the use of good-mannered utterances because it might alter people’s opinion about Islam negatively. Thus, the researchers perceived the use of profanity words as a complex phenomenon that encompasses various contexts.

Abstract

This article explores the feminist practices of fighting against sexual violence conducted by Marin, the main character in Bushnell and Cotugno’s novel, Rules for Being a Girl. The writers used Hall’s (2015), Mulugeta’s (2017), and Hagag Hamed’s (2012) theories to conduct the analysis and interpretation of the perpetrator’s sexual violence and Marin’s actions to fight against sexual violence. The results show that Marin’s teacher, Mr. Bex, committed sexual violence in the form of touching Marin’s cheek, kissing her lips, and intending to touch Marin’s chest. To fight against the sexual violence, Marin reports the case to school administrators, writes in the school newspaper, and starts a feminist book club. Marin's attempts are similar to the practices done by the feminists to confront sexual violence. Her attempts intend to inspire sexual violence victims to speak up and put a fight. As a result, Marin’s fellow students give their testimony and have Mr. Bex kicked out of school. Through her actions and courage, Marin successfully represents herself as a feminist

Abstract

Textbooks play a vital role in language instruction. The study aims to examine the three metafunctions of language based on the Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory. As such, a descriptive qualitative approach along with content analysis is employed to examine dialogues that were selected conveniently from two elementary EFL textbooks. The findings indicate that the relational process is the most frequent process type indicating the ideational function of the two textbooks. For the sake of interpersonal function, declarative sentences are mostly utilized. Meanwhile, the textual function is mostly reflected by the T (Thing) and DT (Deictic + Thing) nominal group pattern. These findings have pedagogical implications for teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL), particularly for elementary school students; providing simple language patterns that help students build a foundational vocabulary and understanding of grammar for proficient communication. The theoretical implication of the findings is the importance of scaffolded learning that helps learners grasp basic linguistic concepts before moving on to more complex and dynamic language use

Abstract

The growing research on teachers’ identity focused mostly on pre-service teachers, beginning teachers, and teachers at the secondary level. Research on teacher identity in the tertiary context has indeed been carried out, however, not much research has focused on the identity of English lecturers in vocational institutions, which arguably face more challenges compared to non-vocational counterparts. Teachers’ identity impacts the teaching process, in the way teachers see themselves, value their roles, and what their beliefs about teaching. These things significantly influence how they approach their work in the classroom. Aiming to fill in the gaps and add to the literature regarding the identity of vocational lecturers, this study seeks to answer three questions: (1) How do vocational English lecturers define their identities related to the six domains namely self-image, motivation, commitment, self-efficacy, task perception, job satisfaction, of teacher identity? (2) What are the things that cause the vocational English lecturer to define their identity, based on the six domains? (3) What are the advantages of knowing the teachers’ identity regarding the challenges that the vocational English lecturers face in their professional lives? The research used the purposive sampling method in qualitative research and was based on the saturation principle to determine the number of research participants. Using questionnaires and interviews with three participants as well as three-stage coding techniques and inductive analysis, this research found various positive identities within all six domains of teacher identity. These identities stem from both personal and contextual factors. Despite these promising findings, vocational English lecturers encounter certain challenges, notably with students who often have limited academic abilities, resulting in feelings of inadequacy, and a lack of enthusiasm for the English learning process.

Abstract

The Holocaust is one of the dark events in history that must be remembered. There are many works in contemporary culture or even literature that apply the Holocaust theme. Unfortunately, these works make the sensitive part of this dark history deviate from the truth, which is crucial for the generation who learn about the Holocaust. Therefore, this research examined a novel with a holocaust theme titled The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. This novel is one of the novels that has become a reference for many people who want to know about the Holocaust and has even been used as learning material for young students yet received many harsh criticisms such as historical inaccuracy even though this novel is considered historical fiction. Thus, it is necessary to study this novel further in order not to mislead the readers. This research will examine readers' reviews on the GoodReads online platform. Because now is the digital era, many people are doing online reading activities and writing reviews on this platform. Analyzing reader reviews also determines the quality of the novel itself. This research will also use the transactional reader response theory by Louise Rosenblatt. Therefore, it shows how changes in meaning occur between the text and the reader's perception.

Abstract

News discourse is often regarded as an objective and formal form of discourse. However, the definition of news is rather elusive. News must be something extraordinary and captivating enough to attract public attention. This research discusses a semiotic analysis of online news, specifically on Beritasatu.com, concerning the new policy for teachers in Indonesia, known as the Teacher Marketplace, proposed by the Minister of Education, Nadiem Makarim. This policy, an online database of teachers that allows schools to immediately choose available teachers, was perceived as an insult to the teaching profession. Consequently, social media platforms such as online news pages, TikTok, Instagram, and others saw online demonstrations suggesting that the government is demeaning teachers by ‘selling’ them in an online database. This research focuses on the headlines, lexical choices, language use, typography, and photography in 15 news articles related to the Teacher Marketplace on Beritasatu.com. Using the interactive model analysis to analyze the data, the results revealed 15 harsh headlines, 27 harsh lexical choices, 18 instances of unpleasant language, 10 satirical photographs, and standard typography across the online news. These findings highlight the need for news readers to be more aware of harsh language in certain online news platforms.

Abstract

In society, the clash of different people, values, and interests in desiring a single shared object could cause the accumulation of conflicting forces to be directed at a single innocent individual. When it resulted in the banishment or execution of the blamed individual, it was known as scapegoating. One of the parties implied to be prone to scapegoating in a community, as demonstrated in the film Monster, is teachers. Using the qualitative descriptive method, this paper investigated the scapegoating mechanism in the case of Hori, a teacher character in Monster, through his actions and words when interacting with other characters. Three main parties were involved in the process of scapegoating: a parent, Hori’s colleagues and partner, and the students. The scapegoating started when a student, Minato, accused Hori of conducting verbal and physical abuse. The single parent’s overwhelming concern, the school staff’s priority in protecting the school’s reputation, and the students’ reluctance to be involved in the case caused them to perceive Hori as a threat to each party’s well-being. Despite Hori’s innocence, the accumulation of hostility resulted in Hori’s expulsion from school. The case in the story implied the dominant power that the school community members have against teachers, highlighting the fragility of a teacher’s position in society.

Abstract

Misunderstanding and misperception in communication often occur due to listeners’ failure to grasp the accurate meaning of a speaker’s utterances. These failures are typically caused by a lack of pragmatic competence in understanding the contexts and conditions of speakers when interacting with listeners in specific situations. An example of communication failure is seen with individuals experiencing serious mental illness (ISMI). Communicating and interacting with ISMI is challenging due to their communication disorders. Their speech and behavior are often impacted by hallucinations, delusions, disorganized talk and abnormal thought processes. This study aimed to explore effective communication strategy to deal with ISMI. The case study involved 3 (three) ISMI who met the eligibility criteria. An inductive qualitative method employing participant observation and documentary analysis was used. Data collection included primary, secondary and tertiary sources, which were triangulated with in-depth interviews with their families. Data analysis was conducted through thematic coding, which revealed that pragmatic competence (80%), Compassionate Psychiatric Care (CPC; 15%) and ecological conduciveness (5%) are key factors in improving communication fluency with ISMI. This article concludes that the speech therapy method developed by Angelicdolly, which combines pragmatic principles with compassion for the ecological conduciveness of ISMI is an effective strategy for enhancing communication with these individuals.
