Abstract

Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization reveals two civilization poles: Western and Eastern worlds. In the West perspective, Islam is a serious threat. Islam is regarded as a terrifying religion and having rigid characteristic, cruel, radical, no plurality mindset, terrorism, undeserved women subjected, dislike other groups, suicide bombing and others. Fethullah Gulen tried to change this view. He tries to combine Islamic values with universal humanism. The problem on how Islam could live in the modern world that aware of plurality is the background of Gulen’s concern. For him, the way to reconcile any matter of diversity’s problem is through dialogue. Dialogue in complex world’s society constitutes a delightful gift for answering society’s condition todays on. To create cosmopolitan Islam in the world, Gullen offers a kind of dialogues as a bargaining solution of an interreligious, culture and civilization problem. The endeavor of dialogue must be done through institutionalization of multi-cultural educational movement by establishing educational institution based on religious social harmony.

Abstract

Abstract

Religion becomes a way to create such a peaceful condition for human being. In the meantime, pluralism constitutes an undistracted phenomenon which has wrapped human life for any single day. Human live in pluralism and constitutes a part of pluralism either passively or actively. Religious pluralism constitutes a particular challenges faced by world religions at this time. Understanding transcendental mission among religious followers, especially Jews, Christians and Muslim, is un-prevented phenomenon which has created several conflicts based on hatreds and fear. Each religion has been growing within heterogenic environment. Responding the realm of heterogeneity in the global era, we need principally reconciliation. It occurs in the guidance of A Common Word which is practiced as a road map to make religious dialogue and to build peace. Religious dialogue must be practiced to reduce conflict and theological problem among religious believers. It needs applied approach to solve religious conflict. This article will elucidate the agreed principles in the field of mysticism and attempt to look for the “melting pot” of religions. Abstract

The majority of Muslim believes that the Prophet Mohammad is not only a religious leader but also a political leader. Besides excluding policy and order in terms of state and people’ problem, he also produces religious instructions related to religion. This condition also prevails in the era of caliphate or Khulafa’ur Rasyidin. At the end of both periods prophet and caliphate, dual function of leadership was disintegrated, the role of state leadership is authorized by caliphate or ‘Umarâ while religious leader by ‘Ulamâ. After the Prophet’s time, the Caliphate could not appropriately perform the Prophet’s role, in both of mentioned forms. Following the period of ‘Alî ibn Abî T{âlib, Islamic state has separated religious affairs from bureaucratic entities: between religion and state. It has eventually created a clash. Religious orders and state regulations are sometimes contending and contradicting. It can be seen from the role of ‘ulamâ in dealing with ‘umarâ that contradict with sharia or general people’ interest. Somehow they contradict each other but also go in cooperation. There is ‘ulamâ who is explicitly advising and challenging the ‘umarâ but also otherwise. This article aims to explain and analyze definition and interpretation of Islamic leader (ulamâ) from Qur’anic and Hadith perspective. In addition, this article will also describe definition and role of Islamic leader using Nahdlatul Ulama’s perspective.

Abstract

The history of prophecy in general and the existence of Prophet Mohammad in particular are the evidence of the important role of Islam as religion of liberation. It means that Islam intends to pose human position into precise site, the caliphate. Muhammad Iqbal states this position as co-cretio of God. Furthermore, revelation of the Quran, according to Farid Esack, is progressive revelation. Quran is a scripture of liberation. Even though, this spirit is often arrested in the interpretations of Quran. These interpretations are often constructed only for the interest of power or the pursuit of elite. Therefore, spirit of Quranic liberation misses its strength and vitality. At this point, Farid Esack gives his attention and his intellectual concern. The weakness of Quranic interpretation inspires Farid Esack to formulate methodology of Quranic interpretation. Esack named this methodology as “liberative hermeneutics”. Esack focuses to humanize human, based on (criticizing) power system and structure of South Africa. Farid Esack gives a strong foothold to his hermeneutic theory on theological system. The choice built by him is very precise. Esack’s excess compared to other intellectual such as Arkoun and Fazlur Rahman is that Esack involves in the act of liberation and the intensity of the dialectic in the field with people of other faiths and ethnic groups and races

Abstract

Religious understanding of the texts and doctrines towards women issues has not come to the final. Cultural construction and professional religious interpretation toward religious scripts also contribute on the woman issues especially in relation with unbalanced relationship between man and woman. Many religious interpretations then put women in secondary level with men as the result that they, women, are seen as men belonging that can be authoritatively subjected as much as men wants, including of violence. Up to this time, the domestic violence happens with regards to the women as the victims, and it is supposed that religious understanding is taking part in contributing the “act of violence” towards women’s existence. So that religion, in this case, remains problematic in shaping the social construction of men and women relations. This article aims to explore more causes of women’s violence and attempts to scrutinize religious interpretation on the texts of gender and family issues. This article argues that religious institution and religious education have big role to shape the contemporary religious understanding towards women’s life; and both religious institution and religious education may also become the indispensable foundation of empowering woman by giving new interpretation of the women public space.

Abstract

The threat for humanism and fanaticism is an important issue which needs more attention from all religious thinkers. The opinion which is given by religious person and intellectuals, is the ideology that is created in order to be able to play role as decision maker. Theology of schizophrenia is a new discourse, especially in the religious discourse and has sharp implication in discussing action. Theology of schizophrenia offers four aspects as basic ideas on religious discourses: intellectual, ideological, technology, and religious aspect. These aspects are complementing and holistically connected. Generally, the theology of schizophrenia intends to explore basic concept of human conflict. To apply this concept into religious discourses, we need comprehensive instrument in order to dissociate people anarchy. One of the important things that we should concern is the strategy and method of its application. The theology of schizophrenia established its methodology on the knees of religious values. It could be applied as a standard to measure good or bad things. Theology of schizophrenia will be positive if it ontologically relates to religious values and axiologically produce humanistic meanings.
