Abstract

Religious plurality in Indonesia context is interesting enough to be discussed. The plurality of culture, race, ethnic and religion constitutes a social condition that often becomes disintegrated major. Pluralism in the context of religion such as Islam has a pivotal role in dealing with such issue. In Islam, all religions and beliefs are believed to have the right of life. But for a certain group, this matter is considered as a faith destruction of Muslim. This article discusses the response from both internal and external groups of Islam concerning with the understanding of Islam to religious pluralism which is currently considered as a trend of globalization and modernization—apparently raises ideological suspicions or even new ideologies. Therefore, an effort to re-actualization of meanings and values into the frame of Islamization, SIPILIS (secularism, pluralism and liberalism) in Indonesian context is necessary. In addition, re-interpretation of the term “religious pluralism” will be more oriented to an attempt to search mutual understanding of different cultures, religions, races and tribes. In this context, the social construction method and socio-historical, moral ethics, and theological-philosophical approach under the central issues within a religious pluralism spectrum such as global theology, universal theology, universal friendship, culminated tradition, private faith, relative truth, the real, relative truth, universality and Humanism of Islam are very essential.

Abstract

The discourses about religion will never come to end. Religion will always be a topic of public sphere and cannot be separated from subjective views. Religion carries the important aspect from which it functions as a vehicle for human being to act of how runs our life in this world. This condition tends to convey religion into an exclusive side. On the one hand, for its adherents, religion (faith) is a basic principle that funnels them to achieve the mean of their life. On the other hand, religion also guide its adherents how to interact with their surroundings politically, economically, socially and religiously. It means that religion is operational and functional doctrine. In social life, religion is used to have such condition where all the structure is well constructed. Basically, the “big religions” (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) are from the same derivation: Semitic. Tauhid is one example of that derivation, besides universal values which inherently arise from those religions. From this point of view, we can say that religion actually has already brought such linear characters among one and another. In this regard, this article attempts to portray the convergences of those religions by using the method of interpretative analysis

Abstract

This article examines the extent of the roots of the conflict between Muslim-Christian and some new horizons full of hope about the relationship between them because both communities derived from the same ancestor, Abraham. Relationship between Islam and Christianity has been (and always) ambivalent: between conflict and peace, between harmony and discord. Qur’an, the scripture of Moslem, invites others to build an inter-religious dialogue in fair and just way. Qur’an has also put the fundamental principle such as political, economic, social and theological considerations. Since Islam and Christianity have identical sources, it is rather unproblematic to look for the equal methods and systems that could effectively found the dialogue. This article intends to discover the roots of conflict within relationship between Islam and Christianity and try to find new perspectives. This paper will discuss claim of theological finality between Islam and Christianity, Christian justification on the crusades and the efforts to build dialogue and harmony. Seeing such conditions, the world does not remind silent. It means, religious people at the International and Regional takes steps persuasive that is by holding meetings with inter-religious dialogue (inter-faith) for a discussion and find solutions of the problems that arise in the middle of cosmopolitan community by promoting the agenda of humanity, justice, and equality, and peace locally and regionally.

Abstract

The history of Jewish Nusantara in Indonesia is unclear whether Jewish came to Indonesia or otherwise. The fact that in Indonesia regulation, Judaism is not part of religions officially recognized by the state, add more suspicions that Judaism is not well accepted in Indonesia. In addition, Indonesia people, objectively, factually and historically speaking, have no much information about Judaism either in terms of religion, social, cultural and politics. In terms of academic studies, Historical and scientific record are not yet capable to explore much information about them. On one hand, the history of Judaism in Indonesia (Yahudi Nusantara) is academically and culturally limited. On the other hand, public discussion and debate relating to this topic—which tend to describe Jews historically and stereotypically—are rising and growing. This article aims to narrow the gap between both of two mentioned realities to explore historical existence of Jews in Indonesia. It will elucidate specific moments when Jews reality has been transforming and challenging in the context of Indonesian culture. Using this paradigm, the article perceives Jews as a dynamic and moving survival, like other realities. Therefore, this article intends to build good understanding of Judaism, in general, and Indonesian Jews in particular.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The project of ‘Âbid Al-Jâbirî’s thoughts has become epistemological critic to traditional frame of Islam-Arab knowledge through analyzing socio-political background on the logic of Arab formulation. According to Al-Jâbirî, the logic of Arabic thought could be devised into three methods: bayâni, ‘irfâni and burhâni. Therefore, the structure of Islam-Arab culture has occurred based on: (1) authoritative texts—because the logic of Arab is exceedingly based on religious texts, (2) authoritative salaf, that is, focused on ‘ulama’s considerations, and (3) authoritative permissivism along with anti-causality (sult}ah at-tajwîz al-lâsababiyyah). Hence, Arabic culture becomes unproductive, poor of concept and theory. As a solution, Al-Jâbirî invites to contextualize the spirit of critic such as rational-empiricism of Ibn H{azm and al-Shât}ibî on fiqh, Ibn Rushd on philosophy, Ibn Khaldûn on sociology, etc. This article will probe specifically about ‘Âbid Al-Jâbirî’s reform thought. Al-Jâbirî’s thinking distinctiveness lies in the epistemological critique conducted on the science that develops in the Arab-Islamic civilization. The epistemological critique becomes a realm of science that not much attention, especially by Muslim thinkers. Al-Jâbirî’s epistemological critique offers to the Muslim world an attempt to reconstruct the building of reason-epistemic knowledge to keep pace and change its Islamic world towards the progress of civilization.

Abstract

Modernism believes that reason will eventually push over religion. Knowledge is considered capable to answer various mysteries that have enforced human to rely on religion. Modernism then is marked by the world that is more unified for the exchanging information stream and economical material. The transnational company and information technology play a pivotal role in shaping into global village. In this circumstance, religion deals with such unbelievable challenge. Religion which claims as the savior of human life is finally replaced by media. But, since 70s decade, a kind of new religious movement tries to challenge this modernization flow. This is what so called religious fundamentalism. This movement leans everything on the holy scripture as the only truth; therefore, it has exclusive and militant character. If modernism is suspected as the one that has thought out any kind of human crisis, then, does religion provide the solution? Although religion is expected to answer all crisis of modernity, its irrationality and exclusivism do not fit with modernism. Religion that is needed by modern society is religion that could be heard by modern ear and in the same time could affirm the affection to human being. Rationalism without love will drag people in a tragic humanism.

Abstract

The inter-civilization dialogue is necessary: unavoidable. There is no civilization can improve its self without an interaction with other civilization. This phenomenon brings Thaha Husain to review how the civilization of Egypt could be “out of date” compared with the Western civilization. He assumes that it was because of traditional thinking of Muslims. In his opinion, Muslims believe that Islamic tradition is the perfect one: no need to learn from other tradition. Husain talks that to realize this decline is better than to feel perfect (apology). According to Husain, Muslims should learn from history, learn from Western civilization—which is more advanced. In this context, academic fairness is very important for Muslim intellectual to create an academic tradition. Husain supposes that imitating the tradition of the West doesn’t mean imitating its religion. Humanity is the key. From Thaha Husain’s thinking, there are two lessons that can be contemplated. First, life in the tradition is a necessity as life in modern culture. Therefore, there is no tradition which does not accept change and debate in line with the dynamics of humanity. Second, rational approach, scientific and historical criticism is of capital importance to catch up with Western civilization
