Abstract

The level of contamination, bioaccumulation and potential trophic transfer of toxic pollutants known as brominated flame retardants (BFRs), such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocychlododecanes (HBCDs), was examined in biota representing different trophic levels in Jakarta Bay. Various organisms were collected using several catching methods during July-August 2007 at eastern part of the bay and were analyzed for nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) stable isotopes, 14 PBDE congeners and three HBCD isomers using GC-C-IRMS, GC-MS and LC-MS/MS, respectively. Analysis of N and C indicated that the biota was composed by different trophic levels within the Jakarta Bay ecosystem. Concentrations of total PBDEs and total HBCDs varied according to species, ranged from 1.6 ng/g lipid wt. to 57 ng/g lipid wt. and below detection limit (nd) to 4.1 ng/g lipid wt, respectively. Furthermore, there was significant positive correlation between trophic level (TL) and concentration of PBDEs was found, but not HBCDs. Trophic Magnification Factors (TMF) values of PBDEs ranged 0.63–3.0 with only two congeners (BDE-47 and BDE–100) having TMFs greater than one.

Abstract

Integrated farming is an alternative effort in order to improve business efficiency in beef cattle farming land. The extent to which it can flourish and contribute to is an exciting thing to assess. Research conducted at the centerof beef cattle in Nagari Sungai Kamuyang, Subdistrict Luak, District Lima Puluh Kota, West Sumatra in 2013.The aim is to analyze the relationship mastery of agricultural resources (land) with cattle control, and its impacton business performance of livestock and household income structure of farmers, survey collection methods, datacollection using structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews. Determination of the respondents conducted by purposive sampling involved 30 farmers. Data were analyzed by descriptive quantitative and qualitative and presented in tabular form as well as a SWOT analysis. The results showed: (a) The relationship between the area of agricultural land ownership by the number of cattle is that the more the number of farms ownership increasing numbers of livestock . Land tenure of >0.5 ha has five cattles. (b) Contribution of the cattle business in research area with agricultural land <0.5 ha is <35 % of total farm household income. (c) Contribution of the cattle business with land holdings >0.5 ha is >40% of total farm household income. Profits per three cows Rp2,786,500.00/periode. R/C = 1.129. This means cattle business is well worth the effort. B/C = 0.129 profits earned is 12.9% of the costs incurred. (d) Priority beef cattle business development strategy is cooperation with other agencies in thedevelopment of feed by utilizing the available land, the provision of knowledge and technology to farmers in order to develop the cattle business, collaboration with agencies planter capital.

Abstract

Social networking sites, is one of the new forms of communication media that have an impact on changing modes of human interaction. One of the social movement-based social networking site in Indonesia is #IndonesiaUnite. This movement began as an effort to show the Twitter users in a positive representation of Indonesia after the bombing. In its development, this movement turned into a collective movement that construct the ideas of nationalism. This paper aims to understand the construction process of nationalism discourse that emerged from the #IndonesiaUnite movement. In addition, this study also attempts to understand the role of social networking sites in the spread of the discourse. In order to answer that questions, discourse analysis is utilized as an analysis method. It turns out that social network sites affecting discourse to spread rapidly. It is caused by social network features that allows its user to see the discourse construction process.

Abstract

Soybean curd whey, which is discarded as a waste, can be used as starting material for the preparation of cellulose and cellulose acetate membrane. However, due to its poor mechanical properties, blending with polystyrene will strengthen to the membrane. Nata de soya was made by soybean curd whey then was dried to produce cellulose flake. Cellulose flake was reacted with acetylation reagent, acetic anhydride, and other solvents to produce cellulose acetat flake. It was then mixed with polystyrene to form blend of cellulose acetate:polysyrene membrane with 100:0, 95:5, 90:10, 85:15, and 80:20 in ratios. These membranes were characterized by water flux, rejection index, and tensile strength. The results showed that cellulose acetate had produced a water content of 4.3%, and acetyl degree of 43.26% (equal to substitution degree of 2.8-3.0). The highest water flux membrane was made of 80:20 (164.23 l/m2., the highest rejection index was from 90:10 was 31.65%, and the highest tensile strength membrane was obtained from 80:20 (24.11 kgf). In conclusion the addition of polystyrene could increase the water flux and tensile strength of membrane, but it decrease the rejection index.

Abstract

Application of the Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) combined with Factor Analysis are able to extract dimensions or factors or components that affect the pattern of development in the area of West Java. Those dimensions are analyzed and inferred from selected regional growth variables which are translated from several relevant theories. The result of the Factor Analysis shows that there are two components that play a role in regional development in West Java. The first is the Human Resources (HR) which is derived from life expectancy, adult literacy, mean year of schooling, and road services variables. The another is concluded as economic factors which is derived from GDP per capita variabel and local investment. The two components or factors can explain about 69,60% of all variances. Combined with MDS, the analysis obtains 4 typologies of region, i.e. the region with both economic and HR factors are positive (+), the region with an economic factor (+), but the HR factor (-), the region with an economic factor (-), but a human factor (+), and the region with both economic and HR factors are negative (-). It can be concluded that the regional development in West Java requires a balanced concern over human and economic development. MDS results show economic growth is only enjoyed by few areas, so that the future needs of regional development should be based on typology obtained in this research.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the antioxidant potential and anti-proliferative activity of Curcuma zedoaria Rosc extract on Hela cells. Two types of materials, such as water and ethanol extracts, were tested at different dose levels (1, 5, and 10%). The potential of antioxidant extract was tested by observing the peroxide value (POV) and prophylactic properties of superoxide (SO). The effects of Cytotoxic extracts were tested by observing the anti-proliferative properties on Hela cell morphology. Results showed that both water extract and ethanol extract contain antioxidants with higher value of superoxide and peroxide than a-tocopherol. Antioxidant potential of Curcuma zedoaria extract is evidential at its high concentration of 10%, but is less significant at lower concentration of 1 and 5%, when compared to the potential of positive control (a-tocopherol) and negative control (non-extract mixture). Antiproliferative activity of Curcuma zedoaria extracts at low concentration (1 and 5%) is not effective. At high concentration of 10%, anti-proliferative activity is effective. Cytotoxic effect of water extract of the rhizome of Curcuma zedoaria at the concentration of 10% changes the Hela cell morphology, but not cell wall rupture. High concentration of ethanol extract causes Hela cells to change its shape, rupture the cell walls, and fragment the cells.
