Abstract

A study was conducted to establish the indirect effects of nitrogen (N) and silicon (Si) on the growth and development of Spodoptera litura on soybean. A full-factorial experiment was arranged in 4x2 factors: first factor was nitrogen with varied doses of 0, 25, 50, and 100 kg/ha; second factor was silicon at 0 and 200 g/m2. The results demonstrated that the application of N and Si indirectly affected the growth and development of S. litura including leaves consumed, weight of larvae, weight of pupal, fecundity and survivorship. In addition, combination of nitrogen and silicon also affected the growth and development of soybean as evidenced by the decreased absorption of Si by soybean following the application of N, while the application of Si combined with high nitrogen doses decreased the absorption of Si. It was also observed that the effect of N was not significant on the growth and development of S. litura.  The application of Si with the high N doses, however, decreased the growth and development of S. litura. It is, therefore, concluded that the mechanism of relationship between N and Si on S. litura could not be explained only by quantifying the absorption value of N and Si.

Abstract

An experiment to study the effect of cow urine applications and dosage of N fertilizer was conducted in Bondowoso, from February to April 2002. A factorial experiment consisted of two factors and the whole treatments were arranged in 3x4 factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The first factor was urine of Cow, consist of U0 = control, U1= 20%, U = 40%. The second factor was dosage of N fertilizer, consist of N1 = 0 kg/ha, N2 = 150 kg/ha, N3 = 300 kg/ha, N4 = 450 kg/ha. The effect of treatments on growth and yield of cucumber were observed. The result showed that there was no interaction between cow urine application and dosage of N fertilizer, except to the fruit diameter. Cow urine application significantly improved the yield of Cucumber, and the 40% application gave the best fruits weight. Dosage of N fertilizer significantly increased the growth and yield of cucumber, and the 450 kg N-fertilizer/ha had the better effects.

Abstract

The research  was  aimed to observe  the influence  of kinds and dosage  of tomato extract  on growth of orchid Cattleya planlet in the Murashige and Skoog media. The experiment was arranged in a completely random design  (2 x 3) + 1 control with three replications. The  first  factor  was maturity  of tomato consisted  of 2 levels i.e riped and  green tomato. The second factor was dosage of tomato  extract consisted  of 100 gram/liter, 150 gram/liter, 200 gram/liter, and with no tomato extract  as control. Result of the research  indicated  that  application of 100 g/liter of ripening  tomato extract gave the better growth of Cattleya orchid than the other treatments.

Abstract

Study on agronomic and economic performance characteristics of cassava (Manihot utillisima L.) in Gunungkidul Regency Special Region of Yogyakarta was conducted in April – August 2016. The research aimed to identify the agronomic and economic performance characteristics of cassava in Gunungkidul regency. Technical implementation of the survey method was conducted by observation and interview. The location of research sampling was determined by stratified random sampling method based on the category of district that has the most or broadest, medium, and small amount of cassava planting area. The respondents were chosen by purposive sampling method as much as 10% from the number of cassava farmers in a village or farmer group. The data were analyzed by descriptive and farming system analysis. The research result showed that there were some cassava cultivars observed, i.e. ‘Ketan’, ‘Pahit’, ‘Adira’, ‘Ireng’, ‘GatotKaca’, ‘Genjah’, ‘Mentega’, ‘Oyeng’, ‘Randu’, ‘Ambira’, ‘Klentheng’, ‘Srondol’, ‘PandesiHijau’, ‘Adira 1’, ‘Pandesi’, ‘Kirik’, ‘Gambyong’, ‘Jowo’, ‘Bamban’, ‘Kacibali’, ‘UJ-5’, ‘Marekan’, ‘Kresno’, ‘Meni’, ‘Merah’, ‘Malang’, ‘Kropak’ and ‘Aban’. Cultivation technology of cassava applied in Gunungkidul Regency is conventional technology. The maximum tillage system is applied in the soil tillage. Generally, Cassava is grown intercropping with rice, beans and maize. Manure is applied in cultivation technology and weeding is done six until ten times. There are eight types of pests attacking cassava plants. Cassava is harvested in seventh until tenth month after planting. Cassava farming is feasible in Gunungkidul Regency with R/C ratio (Revenue Cost Ratio) and B/C ratio (Benefit Cost Ratio) gained 1.

Abstract

Klutuk banana leaf is widely used as food packaging material since it has large size and not easily torn. Many traditional packaging materials are recently abandoned, thus it is necessary to develop an active packaging having an advantage of synthetic packaging. This study aimed to create active packaging from methylcellulose (MC) added with glutaraldehyde (GA) and Klutuk banana leaf extract (EDPK), as well as to determine its properties and antioxidants. The casting method with GA as a crosslinker and EDPK as an antioxidant agent was used to make film/active packaging. Banana Klutuk leaves were dried using cabinet dryer for 24 hours and the leaf powder was extracted using maceration method with methanol 80%. The extract was concentrated with a rotary evaporator to be tested for its antioxidant capacity. The results showed that the film with EDPK addition exhibited dark green color. Tensile strength values increased when EDPK and GA were added at concentrations of 30 and 45%. However, EDPK film elongation was not affected by GA addition. Addition of EDPK decreased thermal stability by 25-45 oC, whereas the addition of GA improved thermal stability by 5-25 oC. Antioxidants in banana leaf extract can migrate to 10 and 50% simulant ethanol.

Abstract

Saponin is one of the bioactive compounds present in plants. Saponin has the benefit of human health. Indonesian has been used binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten) Steenis) to medicine. However, empirical evidence regarding the content of saponin in binahong not been revealed. This study aims to determine the qualitative and quantitative content of saponins in plants binahong. The results showed that base on Tin Layer Chromatography (TLC) analysis, saponin content in the leaves, stems and tubers binahong both young and old were positive. Quantification results the young leaves, old leaves, young stems, old stems, young tubers and old tubers: 1.37ìg/mg, 2.36ìg/mg, 1.89ìg/mg, 1.2ìg/mg, 1.55ìg/mg and 1.35ìg/mg respectively.

Abstract

Lecanicillium lecanii is an insect pathogenic fungus that is often used for pest control and has a wide range of hosts. The L. lecanii is capable of infecting several types of host insects including the Order Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Lepidoptera, Thysanoptera and Coleoptera. The extent of this fungus host range was feared to have a negative effect on predator insects Menochilus sexmaculatus. This study aims were to determined the pathogenicity of the fungus L. lecanii against the imago predatory beetle M. sexmaculatus, to know how the predation ability and the number of eggs fecundity of Imago M. sexmaculatus after application L. lecanii. The research was arranged in Randomized Block Design with 4 replications. The conidia density of L. lecanii used were 106, 107, 108, 109 conidia/ml, 1 ml / l of lufenuron insecticide as positive control and sterile distilled water as negative control. The research showed that the mortality percentage of M. sexmaculatus due to L. lecanii application is low and medium. The L. lecanii was not affected for preying ability on imago M. sexmaculatus but gave effect to the number of eggs fecundity of imago M. sexmaculatus.

Abstract

The experiment entitled the effect of using composisition rice residues and animal manure for media utilization on growth seedling of Virginia tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) in seedbad was conducted to determine the approriate kind of rice residues and animal manure for seedbad for Virginia tobacco. The experiment was conducted at Pakis, Delanggu. The factorial experiment was arranged in the Complete Randomized Design with 12 combinations of treatment. The first factor was kinds of rice residues consisted : rice Straw, rice chaff, and rice bran. The second factor was kinds of animal manure consisted of manure of cow, manure of goat, and manure of chicken. The results of experiment showed that combination of rice straw and manure of chicken is the best treatment for seedling the Tobacco Virginia.

Abstract

A laboratory experiment was conducted to determine the organic matter in reducing Nitrate leaching of coastal sandy soil of Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, done from February up to August 2014. This experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design. The first factor were ratio of cow dung and rice straw (1:1; 1:2 and 1:3), and the second factor were N fertilizer (urea and ZA). The result showed (a) Urea as source of N-fertilizer was more suitable to apply in coastal sandy soil and (b) Organic matter with ratio of cow dung and rice straw (1:1) was able to decrease nitrate leaching of coastal sandy soil of Kulon Progo.
