Abstract

An experiment to study the effect of cow urine applications and dosage of N fertilizer was conducted in Bondowoso, from February to April 2002. A factorial experiment consisted of two factors and the whole treatments were arranged in 3x4 factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The first factor was urine of Cow, consist of U0 = control, U1= 20%, U = 40%. The second factor was dosage of N fertilizer, consist of N1 = 0 kg/ha, N2 = 150 kg/ha, N3 = 300 kg/ha, N4 = 450 kg/ha. The effect of treatments on growth and yield of cucumber were observed. The result showed that there was no interaction between cow urine application and dosage of N fertilizer, except to the fruit diameter. Cow urine application significantly improved the yield of Cucumber, and the 40% application gave the best fruits weight. Dosage of N fertilizer significantly increased the growth and yield of cucumber, and the 450 kg N-fertilizer/ha had the better effects.

Abstract

This study aims to determine ofdifferences in physical, chemical and sensory properties of suweg flour from the dormant and vegetative phases. Physical parameters include yield, edible portion, bulk density, brightness, particle size index, water absorption index and water solubility index. Chemical parameters include the moisture, ash, fat, protein, carbohydrates, starches and sugars reduction. Sensory parameters include hedonic test of color and aroma as well as descriptive test of color and aroma. The results showed that the physical characteristics of flour suweg dormant phase and vegetative phase significantly different at all parameters. Yield, edible portion, bulk density, brightness, particle size index of dorman phase higher than vegetative phase. Chemical characteristics from dormant phase and vegetative phase were significantly different at all parameters, except fat and carbohydrate. Starch contain in dorman phase higher than vegetative phase. But in contrast to the sugar reduction contain. Panellists assess the suweg flour produced from the vegetative phase has a more brown color and smells stronger than the dormant phase so it is less preferred color and aroma. Suweg flour should be selected from the dormant phase. Utilization of flour suweg is recommended for products such as cookies and biscuits that can be grown ingredients to cover the presence of brown and off flavor.

Abstract

A research was carried out to study the existence of rice local variety in the irrigated paddy fields in different ecosystems. The research was conducted from January 2013 to February 2014 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Observation and interview were used in this research for collecting the data. The largest irrigated rice fields were selected using stratified random sampling. Farmers as a respondent were selected by purposive sampling, based on rice variety grown on their paddy fields with the area of at least 1000 m2. Variables were observed in this research including rice variety distribution, farmer experience on planting local variety, physical ecological impacts, rice yield and economical yield component. Data was analyzed by spatial analysis and descriptive analysis. The result showed that rice local variety still existed in the fields, which Menthik and Menthik Susu were dominant local variety distributed in irrigated paddy fields ecosystem. The existence of local variety was indicated by the high percentage of the farmer experience in planting rice local variety. The highest yield and B/C (Benefit/Cost ratio) ratio were gained by Menthik variety compared with other local varieties.

Abstract

An research  on weed  control  with legumes  in sweet   corn intercropping   was conducted   in Kasihan, Bantul  District  of Yogyakarta  on February  to June 2003. The experiment  was aimed  to study  the role of legume  crop to control  weed growth  in  the intercropping    of sweet  corn. The experiment  was arranged in a single factor randomized  completely block  design (RCBD) with three blocks  as replication. The treatment  was the kind of legumes   i.e  groundnut, mungbean and soybean  planted  with sweetcorn  in the ratio of 1: 1, 1:2,  and 1:3 to be compared to  sole  crop of sweet  com  and legumes. The result  of this experiment showed that  legumes   existence reduced light  intensity   on soil surface. Presence of legumes as second crop with ratio up to 1:3 was significantly reduced  the weed growth  but not significantly influenced growth and yield of sweet corn. The higher the ratio of sweet  corn-legumes, the achievement of legumes yield  and land equivalent ratio were higher.

Abstract

A research to study the chemical properties of hyacinth- and straw-compost decomposed by natural and artificial activators was conducted at the Research Field of Faculty of Agriculture, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. Cow manure was used as natural activator, while Stardec (powdered) and EM4 (liquid) as artificial ones. The treatment was arranged in 2x3 factorial completely randomized design. The hyacinth and straw organic sources were decomposed by cow manure, Stardec and EM4 activators. Organic matters were incubated for 5-6 weeks then pH, C-organic, N-total, available P and K, CEC, and the .exchngeable  Ca,  K and Mg were measured. The results showed that the hyacinth-compost had the better maturity according to the C/N ratio (C/N 20) than the straw-compost (C/N 20), but the two kinds of compost had the moderate mature rate of humic substances.  The straw-compost had better quality though as shown in its higher available phosphorus and excheangable potassium, especially when decomposed by EM4 artificial activator. Application of artificial activators Stardec and EM4 enhanced the maturity rate of hyacinth-compost.

Abstract

Coconut water is well known due to its nutrient contents. Unfortunately, the  properties such as flavor, aroma, and taste is easily altered, soon after it is extracted from the fruit by splitting the fruit in two and collecting the water in a clean container. The shelf-life of coconut water drink can be improved by eliminating the enzyme that causes the degredation of the quality, i.e. polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase enzyme. Heat treatment such as pasteurization and Ultra Heat Treatment may inhibit the growth of these enzymes although resulted in the loss of coconut water unique and desirable properties. Ultrafiltration membrane and ultraviolet are two potential cold-sterilization methods. The objective of this research was to estimate the shelf-life of coconut water after ultrafiltration membrane and ultraviolet sterilization. Cold-sterilized coconut water was stored at three temperatures, i.e. 8, 13 and 25 °C, using polyethylene bottles in individual sizes (250 ml). The shelf-life was estimated using Accelerated Storage Study method with Arrhenius equation. pH and total sugar contents were measured as critical parameters, and total plate count was also observed. This research concludee that the shelf-life of coconut water which cold sterilized without any food additives was etimated to be 15 days at 25 °C.
