Abstract

The study describes subordinators indicating temporal relations of equivalenceand sequence in which their existence in compound-complex sentences are obligatory. The distribution method and its five techniques (Immediate Constituent, deletion, permutation, substitution, and expansion) are used to identify the types anddistribution of the subordinators within the Indonesian sentences. The result showsthat subordinators indicating equivalence of temporal relations are saat, ketika, waktu, sewaktu, kala, tatkala, selama, and selagi. Meanwhile, subordinators indicatingsequence of temporal relations are begitu, usai, sesuai, sesudah, selepas, andsehabis. The distribution of the two kinds of subordinators in the cimpound-complexsentences vary; they can be placed initially, medially after the main clause, and after subject of the main clause.

Abstract

The study describes the melodic structure of Indonesian language carried outin two experiments: (1) the productive experiment which is to measure acousticfeatures of declarative and interrogative statements and (2) the perceptive experiment,to measure the sensibility of the Indonesian speakers in listening speech. Thetwo experiments were conducted by using the approach of experimental and psychoacousticphonetics. The result showed that Lindbom’s (1990) hypo-hyper theoryexplaining the relation between speech production and perception in communication, cannot fully be accepted. The first experiment was significant in at least threeacoustic features: fundamental frequency (F0) of the final note peak, of final mark, and the position of final note peak (Pa) in contour; however, the three parametershave not necessarily to occur altogether to expect the interrogativeness perception. The two characteristics of F0: the height of F0 Pa and the final mark shouldoccur at the same time, whereas the features of final note peak (Pa) was not neededto expect the interrogativeness perception. In short, the interrogative perception ofspeech does not require more complete acoustic features when compared to theirproductive parameters.

Abstract

Javanese language is geographically spoken in wide areas; however, it seemsthat its speakers began to give up using it. This can be seen that the quality of itsusage among the young Javanese is deteriorated. This phenomenon mainly happensin the urban areas where the young Javanese tend to use Indonesian languagerather than Javanese language. They think that Javanese language is complicatedrequiring its speakers some regulations and etiquettes, thus they tend to use Indonesianlanguage that is considered as neutral and easy. If this language attitudeoccurs for a long period of time, the Javanese language will be abandoned by itsspeakers or die. The research sample is taken by restricted random sampling technique. They are 244 children and teenagers (between 5 to15 year old ) living insome housings in Kalasan regency. They are chosen from the genuine Javanesefamily whose parents and grand parents are Javanese in nature. The research datais all information about language choice of Javanese and Indonesian languagedone by the subjects of the study in the domain of their houses, schools, and publicplaces spoken to parents, teachers, schoolmates, friends at home, neighbors, auntsand uncles, guest or visitors, grand-mothers and fathers, and strangers. The datais taken by survey questionnaire. Based on the field data, most of the subjectschoose Indonesian language when they communicate with parents, teachers, schoolmates, friends at home, neighbors, aunts and uncles, guest or visitors, grand-mothersand fathers, and strangers. Abstract

The teaching of English in Indonesia has been marked with the frequent changesin the curriculum. However, those changes do not imply whatsoever any changesin the way teachers deliver lessons in a moment-to-moment classroom teaching. We seem to be too much preoccupied with new concepts and perhaps approach toteaching English but fail to formulate how a certain concept can be translated intoclassroom methods and techniques. This paper seeks to shed a light on how a synthesisof various approaches in language learning can be achieved to provide favorablelearning atmosphere for students and more importantly how different theorieson language learning can be transformed into an operational method andtechniques in the classroom.
