Abstract

This study examines students? selection of the pronouns of saya and aku (?I?) when speaking with their teachers. Saya is traditionally prescribed to be the standard form to show politeness and respect, but it has been observed recently that some students have started to use the more informal version aku in the capital city of Jakarta. Therefore, this study aims to describe the use of the pronouns and their accompanying reasons by high school students in a small city in Central Java. This study is crucial to understand student-teacher relationships in the modern Indonesian society. Involving 247 students from a state school and a christian private one in the city of  Salatiga,  the research indicates a move towards the use of the more informal self-reference aku towards teachers although the degree varies depending on the school.  It also suggests that there is a possible shift from ?negative/independence? to ?positive/solidarity? politeness among senior high students in their interaction with their teachers.

Abstract

This study, using a quantitative-qualitative research design, aimed to determine and analyze the language mode of Filipino bilinguals from the University of San Carlos ? Talamban Campus Cebu, Philippines. Specifically, this study focused on the language use in conversational strategies and the factors that influenced their language mode. The data were taken from seven small group conversations consisting of three bilinguals each. The data gathering involved a brief survey, a picture-stimuli to elicit conversations, and an interview. Findings revealed that when the bilinguals activated both of their languages in utilizing strategies, Code Switching, Filler, and Surprising were the top three conversational strategies that were mostly used. Also, results revealed that the language mode of bilinguals were largely-dependent on the Participants and Situation of the interaction. Moreover, another notable finding was that the bilinguals were always in their bilingual language mode as evident in their utilization of the CSs in their available languages. These outcomes suggest that even if bilingualism intervenes lexical retrieval in both languages, it still improves and ensures the flow of the communication process; hence, it does not adversely affect the usage of the first language. Keywords: bilingualism, language mode, Filipino bilingual, conversational analysis, conversational strategies

Abstract

Local wisdom teaches people to live wiser and wiser lives, one of which is manifest in protecting their environment. However, local wisdom that could have been inherited from generation to generation began to be eroded by the flow of modernization and globalization. For this reason, it is very rare to find people who still apply local wisdom as a way of life, including in their efforts to respond to their environment. This has an impact on the increasingly damaged natural environment. For this reason, efforts need to be made to reduce events like this, one of which is by reminding others through novel studies. Thus the need for research with the object of environmental-themed novel studies. This study uses a descriptive comparative method with an ecological approach. The object of the study is a novel entitled Sokola Rimba by Butet Manurung and Sebuah Wilayah yang Tidak Ada di Google Earth by Pandu Hamzah. The purpose of the study is to produce a description of the retention of local wisdom that can anticipate or at least inhibit environmental damage. The results of this study indicate that the community in the novel setting seeks to preserve nature, maintain the harmonization of life with nature through local wisdom that is held firmly. Communities believe in the detrimental effects of natural damage when they forget local wisdom. The local wisdom they hold firm includes knowledge, values, skills, natural resources, decision-making mechanisms, rituals, and local beliefs.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the unconscious connection between the Visayan gods and goddesses and their sacred animals based on the archives of Felipe Landa Jocano?s Outline of Philippine Mythology, Francisco Demeterio?s Towards a Survey of Philippine Folklore and Mythology, and Luzviminda?s blog Visayan Mythologies of the Philippines. The psychoanalytical frameworks of totemism and the collective unconscious drew connections that delineated the cultural symbolism of the animal to its respective deity and linked it further to the values and spheres each deity imparts on the communities that worship it. Through the lens of this theoretical approach, a deep, direct nature of association was extracted between the gods and their sacred animals. Thus, the pre-colonial Visayan communities viewed their animal neighbors as manifestations or totems of divine power that in turn, governs their affairs. An animal that was defined as sacred formed a very essential component of a deity?s identity, and, in consequence, the identity of his or her mortal believers.
