Abstract

This research aimed to describe code switching who used by the Teachers and the students especially kinds and functions to contribute to the interaction in conversation in the classroom. Codeswitching is an alternate use of two or more languages in the same utterance or conversation in a bilingual or multilingual conversation. Previous research has established that code-switching can be interpreted as a resource for bilingual or multilingual children to accomplish specific communicative goals. However, code-switching in educational settings has not been welcomed. Previous research has reported that code-switching in an educational context is considered as a deficit of interactional skills. To describe the functions, the researcher used a descriptive research which was conducted observation and interview. The location of this research was taken from the eighth-grade students of SMAN 1 Tombolo Pao, Gowa Regency with a number of the subject were 2 teachers and 36 students. The research findings of the study showed that teachers do code-switch in the conversation in the classroom, despite their claim that they do not. The English teachers used English and Indonesian. The English teachers made code switching for (1) to make questions, (2) unpleasant feeling, (3) to strengthen request or command, (4) repetition used for clarification reiteration of a message, (5) to give advice, (6) to create humor. And the students' used code switching to made they are easy to speak English and easy to understand what they want to say. Switching from English to Indonesian or other languages can also be employed as the communication strategy in English conversation classroom. The English teachers employ code switching to minimize either student's miscomprehension on the lesson or students’ difficulties in understanding the English lesson given by the English teachers in the classroom.Keywords: Code Switching, Teacher and Students Conversation

Abstract

This study aims at finding out to what extent DASH method improves students’ reading comprehension and how good the students’ improvement regarding their reading comprehension after taught through DASH method. This study was conducted at SMAN 1 Tanete Rilau, Barru Regency. The study used pre-experimental design involving only one class to observe, out of two hundred-eighty population of eleventh-grade students of IPA-II classes at SMAN-1 Tanete Rilau in academic year 2014/2015. The technique sampling was cluster random sampling. The instruments of collecting data used in this study were multiple choice and essay which were used to measure the students’ comprehension in reading. Based on the data collected from the students showed that the post-test value is higher than pre-test table, so the null hypothesis is rejected. It means there is an influence of “DASH” (Duplicated Answer Sheets) method on student reading ability. So the students have responsibility and feel enjoy the learning process. It means that can “DASH” (Duplicated Answer Sheets) method be used as one of the alternatives to teach reading. Further study is suggested to conduct the investigation of other teaching method or strategy that can be applied by the teacher to encourage their student in reading comprehension.Keywords: DASH Method, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

This research aimed to find the use of Cue Card Method improves the students writing skill at Eight Grade Students of SMP Bajiminasa Makassar. The method of this research was classroom action research consisted of two cycles. One cycle consisted of four meeting. it meant that were eight meetings for two cycles. This classroom action research was done at SMP Bajiminasa Makassar for English subject. As a subject in this research was class VIII.A  Junior High School in the 2012-2013 academic year with student’ number as about 36 students’. Those consisted of 26 women and 10 men. the instrument was writing test and observation. The research findings indicated that the application of cue card method was effective and significant in improving the students’ writing skill, especially it focuses on students content and vocabulary. It was proved that the mean score of D-Test was 5.64, Cycle I 6.13 and after conducted Cycle II improved to 8.23 and based two cycle researcher found percentage improvement that is from D-Test to Cycle I is 13.24 % and from Cycle I to II is 29.70 and D-T to Cycle II 46.35 %. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that the use of cue card method improves students’ writing skill and class condition. Therefore, it is recommended that the teachers use cue card media in teaching writing.Keywords: Writing Skill, Cue Card Method

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the Students’ Difficulties in Using Demonstrative Pronoun at the second year of SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa. The researcher applied descriptive quantitative approach as the method for analyzing the data. The researcher collected the data through objective test and questionnaire. The objective test was used to find out the students ability in using the demonstrative pronoun. The test formulated with 20 items multiple choice and a questionnaire was used to find out the students difficulties in using a demonstrative pronoun, the sample of this research was the second year students of SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa in academic year 2014/2015, the sample consisted of 26 students which were taken from the population, 26 students. The data obtained from the test were firstly tabulated, and then analyzed into the technique of percentage and mean analysis. The result of the research data showed that the ability of the second year students of SMP Aisyiyah Sungguminasa found difficulty in using Demonstrative Pronoun with the total mean score 41or classified as fair with the highest score was 60 and the lowest score is 1.6. The finding also showed that among the 26 students, there were 47.25% the students face difficulties in using Demonstrative pronoun “this” in sentences correctly. While there was 65.38% the students faced difficulties in using “that”. In using demonstrative pronoun “these” there were 93.26% the most error. And there was 44.61% the students faced difficulties in using demonstrative pronoun “those”. The researcher concluded that almost all of students got the difficulties in using the demonstrative pronoun. The difficulties were caused the students had less understanding about demonstrative pronoun because they never learned about it before.Keywords: Students’ Difficulties, Demonstrative Pronoun

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the improvement of content and organization in writing skill by using Sedona Method at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Batara, Gowa. The researcher used A Classroom Action Research (CAR). The Researcher had conducted two cycles, where each cycle consisted of four meetings. This classroom Action Research (CAR) was at The Eighth Grade of SMA Batara Gowa, Class XB. As the subject in this research was the X Grade with students’ number as about 29 students. The instruments were writing test and observation sheet. The application of Sedona Method can improve the students’ writing, especially in content and organization. This leads to the conclusion that application of Sedona Method was needed in the English Language teaching and learning in improve their competence to organize their idea. Sedona Method that was focused on the learners can engage the students to organize their ideas better than before. The findings of the research were (1) the students’ content achievement was improved 9.98% from diagnostic test to cycle 1 and was improve 10.03% from cycle I to cycle II (2) the students’ organization achievement was improving 8.63% from diagnostic test to cycle I and improved 10.03% from cycle I to Cycle II. From the description above it could conclude the improving of the students’ writing skill in the descriptive paragraph in terms of content and organization by using Sedona Method at the Tenth Grade of SMA Batara Gowa was improved.Keywords: Writing Skill, Sedona Method

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the improvement students’ speaking ability by using Synchronous Communication strategy at the second grade of SMA 1 Mappakasunggu. This research used Classroom Action Research that consisted two cycles. The research population was the second grade of SMA 1 Mappakasunggu academic year 2014/2015. The sample of this research consisted of 27 students. The researcher obtained the data by using speaking test and observation sheet. The findings of the student's speaking test in cycle I and cycle II had significantly different scores.  There was a better increase of gains by students at the end of action of the second cycle. The research findings indicated that the application of Synchronous Communication strategy was significant in improving the students’ speaking ability of accuracy which focused on vocabulary and fluency which focused on self-confidence. It was proved by the mean score of diagnostic test was 4.5 that classified poor, the improving in cycle 1 was 6 that classified fair and cycle 2 was 7 that classified good. It means that there was the improvement of the students’ speaking ability in SMAN 1 Mappakasunggu.Keywords: Speaking Ability, Synchronous Communication Strategy

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out the students’ speaking skill by using debate.The research design used a pre-experimental, in which it used the pre-test and post-test comparison to find out the result of the research. The population of the research was all students of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Perguruan Tinggi Islam Makassar which consisted of three classes. Each class consists of more than 20 students, so the total number of population was 85 students. Among the total number of population, the researcher took one class to be a sample of this research by using purposive sampling technique. The instruments of this research were speaking test and recording. To analyze the score of the students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test, the researcher used t-test analyses. The result of the data showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The value of t-test (6.35) was greater than the t-table (1.729) at the level of significant (p) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 19. It can be said that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted. Which means that there was a significant difference between the students’ speaking ability before and after using debate or it can be said that the use of debate was effective in improving the students’ speaking skill at the Eleventh Grade of SMA Perguruan Tinggi Islam Makassar?Keywords: Debate Technique, Speaking Ability
