Abstract

Stunting reflects chronic undernutrition during the most critical periods of growth and development in early life. Stunting can be caused by many factors such as child characteristic and socioeconomic factors. The aim of this study was to determine factors associated to stunting among children under five. This research was an analitycal observational study using case control design in Puskesmas Tanah Kali Kedinding, Surabaya. The samples were 34 subject for each group which were selected by simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed by Chi Square and Fisher Exact test. The result showed that low birth length (OR=4,091; CI=1,162-14,397), children who did not get exclusive breastfeeding (OR=4,643; CI=1,328-16,233), low family income (OR=3,250; CI=1,150-9,187), low mother’s education (OR=3,378; CI=1,246-9,157), and lack of mother’s nutrition knowledge (OR=3,877; CI=1,410- 10,658) had significant relationship with stunting among children under five. There was a relationship between birth length, exclusive breastfeeding, family income, mother’s education and mother’s nutrition knowledge with stunting among children under five. The need for an integrated and multisectoral programs to increase family income, maternal education, maternal nutrition knowledge, and exclusive breastfeeding for reducing the incidence of stunting. Keywords: children, socioeconomic, stunting

Abstract

Children under five is a group that vulnerable to undernutrition, particularly wasting and stunting. Wasting and stunting are common happened in poor families. One cause of wasting and stunting is related to mother care pattern to their child. Mother care pattern is associated to maternal education and knowledge level. Mothers with low education will be more difficult to receive information compared to mothers with higher education. Less knowledge mother may affect poor caring pattern, therefore it could induce wasting and stunting problem in children under five. The aim of this research was to analyze correlation between the level of education, knowledge, and mother’s care pattern with wasting and stunting. The sample was 47 children from poor families in Balen, Bojonegoro that selected using simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using chi-square test with α=0,05. The result of the research showed that in poor families, percentage of stunting was higher than wasting and there was no correlation between level of education (p=0,581 and 0,605), level of knowledge (p=0,632 and 0,963), and mother’s care pattern (p=0,719, and 0,928) with wasting and stunting. This study concluded that the level of education, knowledge, and mother’s care pattern do not contribute to the occurrence of wasting and stunting problem among children under five from poor families in Balen, Bojonegoro. The government should strive to increase mother’s and pregnant women’s knowledge about balanced nutrition, child health, and child nutritional problem to prevent wasting and stunting through routine promotion and counselling by health professionals. Keywords: poverty, stunting, wasting

Abstract

Overweight and obesity can occur at any stages in life, one of them is in primary schoolchildren. Prevalence of overnutrition in schoolchildren rise about 10,85% from 2007 until 2013. This problem not only occurs in urban but also in rural areas. One of the factor is imbalance energy intake and physical activity. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between energy intake and physical activity with z-score of BMI for age among primary schoolchildren in rural area of Penebel Tabanan district. This study was an observational analytic with cross sectional design with total 52 schoolchildren. Sample was taken by multistage random sampling. Data was collected by measuring weight and height, 2x24 hours food recall, and PAQ-C. Data was analyzed using Pearson Correlation test. The result showed that there was a correlation between energy intake (p=0.003) and physical activity (p=0.003) with overnutrition. The conclusion of this study is that both intake of energy and physical activity have correlation to z-score of BMI for age in primary schoolchildren in rural area. The school need to provide nutrition education to increase knowledge of student about nutrition and also the guidance to parents regarding limiting the time for watching television and exercise regularly. Keywords: energy intake, overnutrition, physical activity, rural area

Abstract

ABSTRACTGrowth failure process started since the child was still in the womb. The success of growth process is determined by feeding practices. A total of 59% of Indonesian children aged 6-23 months were given food that inappropriate with the recommendations of timing, frequency, and quality. The lack of proper feeding can be reduced by providing intervention in the form of counseling to mothers. The aim of the study was to analyze the growth and feeding counseling towards knowledge and attitudes about feeding in the area of Brambang Public Health Center, Jombang district. The study design was quasi-experimental. Samples were children aged 6-24 months with malnutrition and over nutrition. Respondents were 12 mothers of malnutrition and overnutrition children in each group. The control group was given a leaflet about eating guideline for children, health care “KMS”, and nutrition-conscious family “Kadarzi”, whereas the intervention group was given leaflet and growth-feeding counseling. The counseling was given once a month for 15-20 minutes over three months. Wilcoxon Sign Rank test was used to analyze before-after differences in knowledge and attitudes. The result showed that there was a difference in the level of knowledge in intervention group (p=0,005) and control group (p=0,0250). There was also a difference of attitude in intervention group before-after intervention (p=0,014) but not in the control group (p=0,317). The growth and feeding counseling could increase the knowledge and attitude of mothers about nutrition. The counseling should be given regularly and further effort to assess others factors beyond nutrition is needed for more effective results. Keywords: attitude, counseling, knowledge, weaning food

Abstract

There are many problems arise related to feeding practices and breastfeeding pattern among children aged 6-24 months which is not suitable with the recommendation, such as not exclusively breastfeeding until infant aged 6 months, prelactal food, introduction of soft food, semi solid or solid foods for children whose age appropriate feeding, and food diversity. This study aims to analyze the association between feeding practices and underweight of children under two. This study was an observational analytic study with cross-sectional design. Using structured questionaire, interview was conducted to 51 mothers or caregivers who have children aged 6-24 months old and was selected by simple random sampling technique in Bluru Kidul and Magersari, Sidoarjo. Underweight was obtained from anthropometry data. Weight was measured by using baby scale and digital scale. Result of this research showed that there was no significant association between underweight of children under two with predominant breastfeeding, food diversity, and meal frequency as well as 6 months exclusive beastfeeding and duration of breastfeeding (p>0,05). This study concludes that there is no association between breastfeeding patterns and feeding practices with underweight of children aged 6-24 months. It is necessary to conduct further research on finding association between feeding practices and underweight of children aged 6-24 months by standardized anthropometric measuring tools to confirm results of this study in the same location. Keywords: breastfeeding, children aged 6-24 months, feeding, underweight

Abstract

Iron supplementation is one of the anemia prevention program in Indonesia. Success Indicator of its program is ANC coverage and coverage of iron tablet distribution. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the ANC (Antenatal Care) and iron tablet coverage with prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in East Java year 2015. This research used data report from Nutrition Division and Family Health Division of Provincial Health Office East Java. Data was analyse using Pearson correlation test. The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in East Java was 5.8%, the result are still below the national target which is 28%. The result showed that there was no relationship between the ANC and iron tablet coverage with the prevalence of anemia (p-value > 0.05). It is concluded that coverage of iron supplementation among pregnant women through ANC does not describe the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women due to many factors that infl uence anemia such as bioavailability of iron and compliance pregnant women consume iron. Keywords: anemia, ANC coverage, iron tablet
