Abstract

Deaf children are those with limited hearing, which affects the reception of information, including knowledge about dental and oral hygiene. As a result, many deaf children have moderate to poor debris index scores. This is largely due to a lack of awareness about the importance of maintaining dental hygiene. One strategy to address this issue is using “digital-based pop up book media,” which offers engaging and enjoyable education during the learning process. This study aimed to develop and assess the effectiveness of such media in improving toothbrushing behavior and reducing the debris index in deaf children. This research was conducted using a research and development (RD) approach with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest group design. The sample consisted of 22 deaf children, with 11 in the intervention group (SLBN Semarang) and 11 in the control group (SLBN Ungaran), selected using the Slovin formula. Data were analyzed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient, Shapiro-Wilk, Paired t-test, Wilcoxon, and Mann Whitney tests. Results showed significant improvements in the intervention group. Knowledge scores (p = 0.002, Δ = 1.36), attitudes (p = 0.004, Δ = 1.36), skills (p = 0.007, Δ = 2.91), and debris index (p = 0.000, Δ = 1.364) improved more significantly compared to the control group. In conclusion, digital-based pop up book media is a feasible and effective method to enhance toothbrushing behavior and reduce the debris index among deaf children.

Abstract

Periodontitis is one of the most common periodontal diseases affecting both elderly individuals and heavy smokers. This case report aims to describe the management of a geriatric patient with generalized chronic periodontitis and a history of heavy smoking. A 63-year-old male patient presented with a chief complaint of mobile teeth that had persisted for the past three months. Intraoral examination revealed necrosis, cervical caries, gingival recession, and poor oral hygiene. The treatment included extraction of the mobile teeth and socket curettage to remove necrotic tissue. The patient was prescribed antibiotics and analgesics, followed by a one-week post-operative evaluation. The patient reported no pain or swelling after extraction, and the healing process was satisfactory, with no signs of infection. The patient was also informed about a long-term treatment plan involving the fabrication of a prosthesis. Tooth extraction in patients with chronic periodontitis requires careful consideration of both clinical and non-clinical factors. This case highlights the importance of a comprehensive approach in the management of periodontitis in elderly heavy smokers.

Abstract

The dental arch consists of teeth that develop on the jawbone. The shape and size of the dental arch are important components in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This study is to determine if there is a relationship between gender and the length and width of the dental arch in children aged 7 to 9 years. This research is an observational study using a cross-sectional design. The sample included 72 subjects for the study, consisting of girls and boys ages 7, 8, and 9, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The dental arch width was measured at the inter-canines and inter-molars by digital sliding calipers. Anterior and posterior size of dental arch length measured from the midpoint between the right and left permanent central incisors perpendicular to the inter-canines and inter-molars. The Independent Sample t-Test results showed no significant differences in any parameters at the age of 7 years. However, at 8 years, a significant difference was observed in the intermolars of the mandible, while at 9 years, a significant difference was found in the intercanines width of the mandible between males and females. These findings indicate developmental variations in mandibular growth based on gender.

Abstract

In Indonesia the number of dental and oral problems reaches 57.6%. The results of a preliminary study at a dental practice in Sumberadi Sleman found that 60% were not interested in carrying out an odontectomy. Odontectomy is a method of extracting or removing teeth that cannot grow or grow partially. The influence of dental health education using video media on knowledge and interest in odontectomy procedures is known. This research design is quasi-experimental with a Non-Equivalent Control Group design. The research was conducted in February 2024, the research population was patients at dental practices in Sumberadi Sleman with a sample of 64 respondents. Data were collected using a knowledge and interest questionnaire for odontectomy procedures. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Test and Mann Whitney Test. The results of the research showed that the frequency of knowledge level was mostly good criteria (93.8%) and the highest frequency of interest in odontectomy (93.8%). The Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant difference before and after being given education about odontectomy using video media with a p value 0.05. The results of the Mann Whitney test showed that there was a significant difference between promotion using video media and lecture media on knowledge and interest in odontectomy procedures, with a p value 0.05.Education about odontectomy using media influential videos to increase knowledge and interest in odontectomy procedures.

Abstract

Stunting is the most prevalent form of malnutrition, with far-reaching impacts beyond just height and academic performance, as it is also associated with poor oral health conditions. A study has shown that stunted children have a high prevalence of dental caries, with a def-t index value of 53.3%. Muaro Jambi Regency has a stunting prevalence rate higher than the provincial average of Jambi, standing at 18.6%. This study aims to identify the relationship between formula feeding and the incidence of dental caries in Muaro Jambi Regency in 2024. This study employs a cross-sectional design. The sample consists of stunted children aged 1-5 years. Data analysis includes univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses. The results of this study show that formula feeding has a significant association with the incidence of dental caries in stunted children, with a p-value of 0.007 after controlling for the variables of cariogenic food consumption and tooth brushing habits. Furthermore, the results indicate that stunted children who are fed formula are 14.545 times more likely to develop dental caries compared to those who are not fed formula.

Abstract

The evaluation of the "SIMPUS" software in Semarang City is motivated by the existence of a dental medical record information system within the “SIMPUS” application. However, some menus are not yet aligned with the required standards. In addition, there is a new discourse on the use of dental data as a means of human identification in disaster events. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the implementation of a standardized dental medical record information system, as well as to establish and test a system capable of supporting decision-making in human identification. This research employed a quantitative descriptive method to evaluate the use of the “SIMPUS” software in Semarang City. Data collection was carried out through interviews and observations. The research subjects were dental therapists and dentists at community health centers (puskesmas) within the jurisdiction of the Semarang City Health Office. Data were analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach. The results showed that the “SIMPUS” software in Semarang City is user-friendly as a Dental Medical Record Information System, although some codes occasionally do not appear. The system is comprehensive, and the data output matches the input provided. However, the feature for human identification using dental charts is not yet available, and there is no display of individual baseline data related to odontogram codes. The “SIMPUS” software in Semarang City is accepted by users as a Dental Medical Record Information System that meets national dental record standards. It can be used by community health centers to manage patient registration data, medical records, and generate monthly disease reports (LB1) and dental treatment reports. However, patient search features based on odontogram codes are not yet available, and further research is needed.
