Abstract

Sugarcane cultivation in dryland is faced with a lack of water availability and low P content in the soil. The technology that is expected to improve the productivity of dry land planted with sugar cane is the use of microbial technology, such as the arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) which are synergized with compost planting media as a soil mixture. This study aims to obtain the optimum dose of AMF inoculants, to get the best composition of the planting media, and to get the interaction between AMF inoculant doses on the growth of sugarcane. The study was conducted at the Politeknik Negeri Lampung Teaching Farm from November 2017 to June 2018. The experiment was using a factorial randomized block design with three replications. The first factor is the AMF inoculant dose which consists of four levels (0 g/bucket, 5 g/bucket, 10 g/bucket, and 15 g/bucket); while the second factor is the composition of the compost: subsoil planting media consisting of four levels (0%: 100%, 25%: 75%, 50%: 50%, and 75%: 25%). The results showed the application of AMF inoculants up to 15 g/bucket had not been able to increase the growth of sugarcane. The composition of the planting media 25% compost: 75% subsoil has been able to increase the number of tillers, number of leaves, and stem diameter of sugarcane. There was no interaction between AMF inoculant dose and the composition of the planting media on the growth of sugarcane. Sugarcane requires fertile soil conditions, enough water, and not flooded.

Abstract

Planting corn and some types of beans are two types of plants suitable to be applied in the salome intercropping system on dry land. This study aims to determine the effect of biochar on the growth and yield of several types of beans which are grounded with corn on dry land. To find out the interaction of biochar on the growth and yield of several types of peanuts intercropped with salome with corn on dry land. This research was conducted by experimental gardens of the Faculty of Agriculture, Unimor, in June until November 2018. Using a Randomized Block Design. Factorial repeated three times. The first factor is the use of biochar which consists of two levels, namely without biochar and use of biochar. The second faktor is the type of upright local beans, namely green beans, rice beans and red beans. There was no interaction between the biochar treatment and the type of beans intercropped with maize on all observed parameters. Addition of biochar into the soil caused several parameters of growth and crop yield to be lower than controls such as plant height, leaf number, weight of 100 seeds, seed weight per plot, and harvest index. The type of beans that are intercropped with corn with the salome method is best produced by Phaseolus vulgaris beans.

Abstract

Soil type in dry land, dominated by vertisol soil. Vertisol soil is a soil with a high klein content and has the characteristic of expanding and contracting periodically, which expands when wet and contracts when dry. Due to the nature of the soil, it is necessary to use soil amendments to increase soil aggregation and aeration so that the absorption of water in the subsurface layer of the vertisol soil is maximized. Shallow and fine lettuce roots require better aggregation and aeration of vertisol soil. This study aims to determine the effect of burning temperature for kayu putih (eucalypus alba) biochar and the frequency of giving compost tea on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) on vertisol soil. This research is a field experiment carried out from March to May 2019 in the experimental garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Timor, Kota Kefamenanu District, Sasi Village, Timor Tengah Utara Regency. This study uses a completely randomized design (CRD) with 2 factorials with the first factor being the combustion temperature of the biochar raw material which consists of 3 levels, namely 350ºC, 450ºC and 550ºC. The second factor is the frequency of watering of tea compost which consists of no compost tea, one watering a week, 2 watering a week and 3 watering a week. So that in this study there were 12 experimental units which were repeated 5 times. The results showed that the combination of biochar combustion temperature treatment and watering frequency of tea compost significantly affected the observation of plant height at 35 days after planting, number of leaves at 35 days after planting, and total plant fresh weight. Kayu putih (eucalypus alba) biochar which was charred at 350ºC gave the best effect on the growth and yield of lettuce. The frequency of watering compost tea once a week gave the best results on the growth and yield of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.).
