Abstract

The risk of financing is the risk caused by the failure of the customers to fulfill their obligations. Non-performing financing (NPF) is a representation of financing risk that is channeled and has a direct impact on bank profitability. The value of NPF tends to increase annually with a value that is already close to the maximum limit set by Bank Indonesia of 5 percent. This condition is able to lead to the inefficiency of the banking system and in the long run, will have an impact on the sustainability of the bank. Therefore, the analysis of NPF factors should be conducted as a preventive measure and a risks controller of business activities. This research analyzes the factors influencing NPF at sharia banking (BUS) using a quarterly data from first quarter of 2012 until third quarter 2016. The method used in this research is panel data analysis. The result of analysis shows that the factors influencing NPF negatively and significantly are ratio of revenue sharing financing (RR), Return on Assets (ROA), inflation, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and Bank size while Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Operating Cost to Operating Income (BOPO) have a significant positive effect.

Abstract

The democratization process in Indonesia is in line with the emergence several Islamic mass organizations which accept or rejected the concept of democracy. Since the pre-independence era, Indonesia has been facing some Islamist groups that opposed to state’s ideology of democracy. This article presents the discussion among scholars about the compatibility between Islamic norms and democratic values, and in what position Indonesia is. The dealing question with the discussion is; does the proliferation of radical Islamist movement signify the incompatibility of Islam and democracy? By using sociological and historical approach, this paper analyzes in order to what extent the values of democracy and Islamism adapt in the frame of a democratic country. The analysis of this research results that the existing radical Islamist movement is not a failure of Indonesia’s effort to harmonize Islam with democracy. Thus, neither the presence of pro-democracy Islamic mass organizations nor the radical Islamist movement cannot be used as the final argument to answer whether Islam compatible with democracy or not. The results of this study reveal that democratization in Indonesia has been accompanied by the proliferation of Islamist movements. The proliferation of Islamist movements nowadays precisely indicates that democracy in Indonesia has a special experience regarding new formula of peacefully religion-state relations.

Abstract

Since the implementation of regional autonomy laws in Indonesia, large numbers of sharia-inspired laws have been implemented in the West Sumatera Province. Furthermore, some Minangkabau people, the ethnic group indigenous to the province, have insisted in the abolishment of the matrilineal and land tenure system, which they believe is not in accordance with sharia. For hundreds of years, the Minangkabau ethnic have been famous for being one of the world’s largest matrilineal societies, and the inheritance of land and property ownership is handed down according to the matrilineal principle over generations. As a result, conflicts arise within indigenous communities (internal conflict-horizontal) since its proponents and opponents are equally strong in the society. The most interesting aspect to be analyzed is the fact that the disputing groups use sharia to legitimize their points of view. Some argue that the matrilineal and land tenure system is in accordance with sharia while others argue otherwise. This study will focus on the discourse beyond the epistemic claim made by the disputing groups. This paper argues that the mix of ideological, political and economic interests play a significant role behind the struggle for control of the religious discourse, particularly related to the matrilineal and the land tenure system in the Minangkabau post reformasi era.

Abstract

This paper gives a new perspective about pesantren (Islamic boarding school) as the source of peace education in Indonesia using three concepts; First is a collective opinion that reflected in the UN Declaration of Culture of Peace, second is the definition of peace education based on peace and conflict resolution studies, and third is the historical side of Islam in Indonesia. To explain the main idea about pesantren as the source of peace education, this paper uses the qualitative method in analyzing the data from interviews in some pesantren in Madura Island in 2014. This paper constructs a hypothesis that pesantren is the unique source and very potential for creating Indonesian peace leaders in the future. This idea is simply coming from a common sense that Muslims majority in Indonesia send their children to the pesantren to have a good education and good manner as well. But on the other side, some pesantren precisely create some radicals, so I would like to uphold this issue by telling the Union European historical experience to handle radicalizes through peace education by harmonizing state-religion relationship.

Abstract

The idea of Gamwell on“religion as rational” was based on the concept that religious freedom is nothing other than a political discourse that can be figured out only through a democratic resolution. Changing the paradigm from “religion as non-rational” to “religion as rational” is a necessary condition for entering a public debate. Yet, the sole public debate or public view is not enough to solve the modern political problem. The public debate must be guided by a constitutional procedure affirmed by the body politic so that it fulfills the criteria of formal claim about justice. Applying qualitative research and literature review this research tried to reveal: Gamwell’s idea of religious freedom, the features of the Islamic State as described by Abdul Rauf and Gamwell’s concept of religious freedom and the idea of establishing the Islamic State advocated by Abdul Rauf.
