Abstract

The topic of the writing is Islam and Jihad.  The main focuses of this writing is how the concept of “Jihad” understood by the West, which is labeled as “Radical Islamist” on the base of the action of the radical Islamic groups, while Islam undermines tolerance and peace? The methodology of this writing is descriptive analyzes of the concept of Islam and jihad. It found that the idea of jihad has multiple meanings in Islam which is not confined to holy war. It is lesser jihad which is considered as holy war. However, holy war in Islam does not refer to military aggression as understood within the Christian tradition. The values of peace and tolerance are emphasized as Islam is very concerned with the sanctity of human life, justice and humanity. In addition, the history of Islam has shown that in the classical era Muslims could coexist with non-Muslims in harmony and peace. It is clear that Islam is deeply concerned with peace and tolerance such as Silm, assalamu alaikum etc. Jihad has been misunderstood and distorted in the west and among Muslim radicals as it tends to be associated with Muslim aggression, holy war, violence, and terrorism.

Abstract

Moanggo, an oral literature of Tolaki people is currently at risk of being wiped out as it is now only rarely played at traditional wedding ceremonies in Tolaki. It is among the identity markers of Tolaki people loaded with messages for private, family and social lives. On this basis, this study aims to (1) Describe the meaning contained in Moanggo as a local literature of Tolaki people. (2) Describe the values contained in Moanggo as a traditional oral literature of Tolaki people. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. To achieve the objectives, this study applies the theoretical framework of Paul Ricœur’s hermeneutics. Data sources to be examined in this investigation comprise some informants and the Anggo text itself. The data are also obtained from observations, interviews and documents. The data are then analyzed using Milles and Huberman’s technical data analysis, namely: 1) Data collection, 2) Data reduction or simplification of data, 3) Presentation of data, and 4) inference / verification. The results indicate that the meaning of the Anggo text in oral narrative of Moanggo cannot be separated from the socio-historical cultural context when it is narrated. Therefore, every text has been linked with the socio-cultural context of Tolaki people at present time, and it is of course a representation of the history of life of Tolaki people in the past. The values contained in the Anggo text comprise the value of education, moral values, cultural values and philosophical values. Moanggo as an oral literature of Tolaki people is an identity marker for Tolaki people, and it is presently at risk of extinction due to its lack of use in wedding customs and other cultural activities. Therefore, the preservation of the oral literature Moanggo needs to be maintained by both the government and the Tolaki society.

Abstract

Islamic politics always plays a key role in the formation of Indonesian national identity even though at certain points Islam had to compromise in the process of establishing the identity. In spite of this, Islam has noticeably brought about strong influence to a major part of Indonesian history. This in turn gives Islam a space to significantly take part in the development of Indonesian politics up to the present time. On the other hand, the role of political parties, particularly those of the Islamic parties, will always shape the discourse of Islamic party in Indonesia. This in turn will be an indicator for the ongoing involvement of Islamic politics in Indonesia, more specifically in South Sulawesi.

Abstract

The main objective of this research was to elaborate how pesantren contend with multicultural education.  Qualitative methods including: interviews, focus group discussion (FGD) and detailed observations of the life of pesantren were used. The researcher also examined the wide range of literatures related to the topic. The research focused on pesantren Mangkoso Barru, Indonesia, representing traditional pesantren in the region of South Sulawesi. The data was collected from the teachers, students, kyai (religious leaders) in this particular pesantren. The findings suggest that pesantren have their own understanding regarding multicultural education. Their understandings were mainly based on the holy Koran without learning from western perspectives. They believe that human beings were created on the basis of difference, so people must appreciate one another.  The differences related to language, race, religion, are a must. These concepts have been implemented in the pesantren curricula. The curricula are very inclusive and more opened to any difference. The pesantren provides different materials which come from different sects, and students.  There is no enforcement from pesantren management to just learn from specific sect.  In addition, expanding networks of pesantren is also inclusive. They have already collaborated with different organizations in relation to development of pesantren management.  Another issue considered was its vision of leadership which is perceived as very open. The leader (kyai) are frequently involved in multicultural campaigns, such as seminars, workshops, and bench markings. They perceive that the progress of pesantren depends strongly on the way the kyai deals with contemporary issues, including multiculturalism.

The sinkretisme happens and experiences over all archipelago in general and continues to be-so, at least before some Islamic reform movement is present as neutralizing the situation.
