Abstract

This study analyzes moral values and patriotism in Disney's "The Little Mermaid" (2023) using descriptive qualitative methodology with content analysis techniques. The research addresses contemporary society's moral crisis and declining patriotic sentiment, particularly among younger generations, through examining how popular media can serve as educational vehicles for positive value transmission. Utilizing Magnis-Suseno's theoretical framework for moral values and Ginting's patriotism theory, the analysis identified five dominant moral values: courage, integrity, responsibility, cosmic awareness, and reconciliation, categorized across three human relationship dimensions. The patriotism analysis revealed four key values classified into blind and constructive patriotism, with constructive patriotism dominating 75% of examined scenes. Findings demonstrate that courage and integrity are the most prominent moral values, while pro-people leadership and multicultural unity represent significant patriotic elements. The research employed theory triangulation and data source triangulation to ensure validity. Results suggest that Disney's adaptation effectively integrates moral education and patriotic values relevant to Indonesia's contemporary challenges, including elite corruption and political polarization. This study contributes to educational literature by demonstrating how modern film adaptations can serve as meaningful resources for character development and nationalism education.

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of using the Duolingo application on senior high school students' grammar achievement. A total of 70 students participated in the research, divided into experimental and control groups, to evaluate whether integrating Duolingo into language learning enhanced students' grammatical skills. The experimental group used Duolingo for grammar practice, while the control group followed traditional teaching methods. Pre-test and post-test scores were analysed to measure progress. The results indicated a significant improvement in the grammar scores of the experimental group, with an average increase from 66.14 (pre-test) to 76.57 (post-test). In contrast, the control group exhibited minimal improvement, maintaining an average score of 66.14. The findings suggested that Duolingo’s interactive and gamified features motivated students and enhanced their comprehension of grammar rules, leading to better performance. Statistical analysis confirmed that the difference in improvement was significant, leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0). This study underscored the potential of technology-based learning tools like Duolingo in promoting grammar proficiency among senior high school students. However, limitations regarding sample diversity and the duration of intervention highlighted the need for further research to validate long-term effectiveness.

Abstract

This study explores the perceptions of third-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Tangerang regarding the use of the Book Creator application as a digital tool to support the development public speaking especially in application of public speaking elements. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data was collected through interviews with 32 students and 1 lecturer teaching the public speaking course, as well as analysis of student video project documents. The results indicate that 29 out of 32 students experienced improvement in at least one element of public speaking, including facial expressions, eye contact, hand gestures, body movements, and voice. Multimedia features such as video, audio, text, and image insertion encouraged repeated practice, self-evaluation, and increased self-confidence. Students also developed greater creativity and clarity in crafting their messages. These results support the implementation of a reflective and student-centered learning approach in a digital environment. However, this study is limited by its small sample size and single institutional context. Practical implications suggest that educators can integrate Book Creator to develop public speaking skills in a flexible and engaging manner, tailored to the needs and learning styles of learners.

Abstract

This study investigates how English lecturers' motivational strategies influence students' self-efficacy in academic writing. Employing a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design (QUAL → quan), the research consisted of two phases: a qualitative inquiry involving semi-structured interviews with three lecturers, followed by a quantitative survey distributed to 30 undergraduate EFL students. The qualitative findings revealed the implementation of motivational practices such as goal-setting, scaffolding, autonomy support, reinforcement, constructive feedback, and classroom climate. Students perceived these strategies as fostering greater writing confidence. A simple linear regression analysis confirmed a significant positive influence of teacher motivational strategies on students' writing self-efficacy (R = 0.511, R² = 0.261, B = 0.320, p = 0.004). These results underscore the pedagogical importance of strategically designed motivational interventions in enhancing EFL learners' self-belief and performance in academic writing. The study highlights the need for professional development programs to equip educators with evidence-based motivational teaching tools.

Abstract

This research analyzes the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the Look Both Ways movie. Data were collected through non-participant observation by watching the film multiple times to identify and classify expressive utterances by the main characters, Nathalie and Cara. The data were categorized using Searle and Vanderveken’s (1985) theory, supported by Halliday and Hasan’s (1985) context of situation. A total of 39 expressive acts were found, with thanking (35.9%) as the most frequent. The context of situation field, tenor, and mode significantly influences the meaning and function of each act. This study highlights the importance of expressive illocutionary acts in building emotional connections and shaping character relationships, while also contributing pragmatic insights into film discourse and enriching linguistic research in cinematic contexts.

Abstract

In the era of globalization translation has become more important. Humans have even created translation machines to connect people from around the world. However, translator machines are different from human living translators. The sense of one culture cannot be translated by machine. That is why translators are important. This research aims to find out the translation technique used to translate the sarcasm found in the memoir entitled I’m Glad My Mom Died (2022) by Jennette McCurdy. This research used John Dryden’s translation technique to analyse the translation of the sarcasm of the memoir. There are three translation techniques according to Dryden (in Munday, 2002); metaphrase, paraphrase, and imitation. This study also analyzed the types of sarcasm that are found in the memoir based on Camp (2012); like-prefixed, propositional, lexical, and illocutionary. The researchers of this study found 11 sarcasms from the memoir. The 11 data of sarcasm in the book align with the types of sarcasm outlined by Camp (2012). The researcher found four types of sarcasm in the memoir and each of the sarcasms were translated with different techniques. The use of different techniques for each sarcasm is to make it easier for the target audience to understand and to not lose the sarcasm essence from the memoir.

Abstract

This study examines the judicial discourse surrounding money politics in Indonesian electoral processes through a critical discourse analysis of Decision Number 61/PID.SUS/2019/PN.MLL from the Malili District Court regarding criminal acts of money politics during the 2019 elections in East Luwu Regency. Using Fairclough's three-dimensional framework of critical discourse analysis, this research investigates how legal language constructs and legitimizes judicial reasoning in electoral corruption cases, while examining the underlying power relations and ideological assumptions embedded within the court's decision.  The methodology combines textual analysis, discursive practice examination, and sociocultural practice investigation to uncover how the judge's linguistic choices reflect broader institutional attitudes toward electoral integrity and democratic governance. The study analyzes lexical choices, syntactic structures, modality, and argumentation patterns within the legal text to reveal how judicial discourse shapes public understanding of electoral crimes and their consequences.  Key findings reveal that the judicial discourse employs specific linguistic strategies that position money politics as a threat to democratic legitimacy while simultaneously reinforcing state authority in electoral oversight. The analysis demonstrates how legal language serves not merely as a neutral vehicle for justice delivery but as a powerful tool for constructing social reality and reinforcing existing power structures. The court's decision reflects tensions between legal formalism and contextual considerations of local political dynamics in East Luwu.  The research contributes to understanding how judicial discourse in Indonesia's post-reform era constructs electoral integrity narratives and legitimizes legal interventions in political processes. It reveals the complex interplay between legal reasoning, political context, and social power relations in contemporary Indonesian democracy. The findings have implications for legal reform, judicial training, and broader discussions about combating electoral corruption in emerging democracies.
