Abstract

This research examines how students view the Preply application as a tool for enhancing their English reading vocabulary skills, employing a qualitative case study approach. In total, there were 27 seventh-grade learners from a junior high school in Delitua who took part in the research. Information was collected through questionnaires administered before and after the study, as well as through semi- structured interviews. After utilizing Preply, students’ confidence in reading vocabulary saw an improvement of 0. 95 points on average. The results indicate that the features of Preply—such as its flexible accessibility, multimedia resources, and the availability of tutors—positively influenced student engagement, motivation, and self-sufficiency. Nevertheless, there were obstacles, including limited access to premium functionalities and insufficient integration with existing curricula. This research is based on the frameworks of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) and Self-Determination Theory, providing valuable insights into incorporating digital tools into formal English education.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between the implementation of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and students' interest in learning English at the junior high school level. PBL is a student-centered pedagogical approach that engages learners in solving real-world problems to develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. The primary research question examines whether the application of PBL significantly influences students’ interest in English language learning. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the study involved 50 eighth-grade students from a public junior high school in Indonesia. Data were collected through structured questionnaires assessing perceptions of PBL and levels of interest in English learning. The results, analyzed using the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test, revealed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.630, p = 0.000), indicating that increased implementation of PBL correlates with higher student interest. These findings underscore the potential of PBL to enhance student engagement and motivation. English language educators are encouraged to adopt PBL strategies to foster more meaningful and interactive learning environments.

Abstract

This research conducted a comparative evaluation of ChatGPT-4.0 and Google Translate 2024 in translating Arabic literary metaphors into English. We applied a qualitative research approach focusing on the novel "Memory in the Flesh" by Ahlam Mosteghanemi, the study analyzed metaphor types 27 out of 77 data, translation strategies employed by each tool, and the quality of translations based on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The study identified the types of metaphors used in the novel, analyzed the translation strategies employed by each tool based on (Newmark, 2022) framework, and evaluated the output quality using (Nababan et al., 2012, n.d.) assessment model of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Findings indicated that while Google Translate 2024 showed a slight edge in literal accuracy which achieved 2.85, in acceptability Google Translate 2024 achieved 2.62 score and in readability achieved 2.31, ChatGPT-4.0 significantly outperformed it in acceptability and readability crucial for literary texts, In acceptability ChatGPT4.0 achieved 2.98 and in readability 2.99 score. The study highlighted the evolving capabilities of machine translation in handling nuanced literary language and underscores the continued importance of human oversight in achieving high-quality literary. The research emphasized Involving capabilities of neural machine translation systems, particularly in handling complex and nuanced literary content. However, it also underscored their limitations, especially in capturing cultural subtleties and maintaining the figurative resonance of literary metaphors. Abstract

Proficiency in the use of collective nouns is indispensable in English because it enhances effective communication. However, using collective nouns appropriately poses challenges to many. The present study investigated approaches for learning collective noun proficiency at a South African primary school. A quantitative research method was espoused as it establishes cause-and-effect relationships and determines a large population’s opinions. Data was collected using a questionnaire because it gathers information from large data sets within a short period. A probability sampling technique was employed to randomly select twenty-five Grade 7 English First Additional Language learners because it gives every learner an equal chance of participation in the study. A Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 28 was employed to enhance power analysis procedures that create a graphical representation of results. Preliminary investigation indicated that the participants were incompetent in understanding the use of collective nouns. Nonetheless, after using the memory and Scavenger hunt game approaches, learners performed outstandingly. The current study has significant implications for future collective noun proficiency for both learners and teachers. Future researchers can conduct further research on approaches for enhancing collective noun usage. The paper endorses the frequent use of the identified approaches to enhance English proficiency.
