Abstract

This study aims to analyze Homonyms in fashion terms from Vogue Magazines. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method to describe the data and each word's components. Language as an arbiter can have double meanings and is known as a Homonym in the study of semantics. Semantics is the study of the meaning of words. In this research, writers used Vogue magazines as the object; the research used homonyms theory by Saeed to find what types of homonyms in the articles of Vogue Magazines and the meaning components contained in fashion terms. Homonyms are divided into two types: Homographs and Homophones. The data were collected by reading several magazine articles and choosing words unfamiliar with fashion terms. Each of the words in fashion terms has a different component. The results show that homographs are the most used words in fashion terms.

Abstract

English is an international language that is essential to master, especially in terms of speaking skills. However, many students still face limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and a lack of confidence. This study, conducted in Aceh Barat Daya, Indonesia, explores students' strategies for improving their English-speaking proficiency using a qualitative case study approach. A total of 9 junior high school students (ages 13–15) from three schools were selected through purposive sampling based on their English proficiency, participation in academic activities, and additional learning experiences. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation. The findings indicate that students employ a range of strategies to enhance their speaking skills, with learning and practice strategies being the most prevalent. The strategies employed include direct strategies (reading, looking for pronunciation, practicing, listening, and using English applications) and indirect strategies (using social media, structured lessons, self-directed learning, making friends with foreigners, and asking teachers and peers). The study recommends that teachers integrate these varied strategies into classroom instruction and promote technology-assisted speaking practice to better support students' development.

Abstract

This study (2023–2024) investigates humor translation challenges in audiovisual media, analyzing Indonesian subtitles of the British mockumentary Cunk on Earth (2022), a satirical show hosted by Philomena Cunk that parodies documentaries with absurd, deadpan comedy. Focusing on 128 humorous utterances (yielding 228 technique instances), the research applies Molina and Albir’s (2002) translation framework to identify strategies that preserve comedic effect amid cultural- linguistic gaps. A mixed-method approach combined qualitative analysis with audience evaluations: three native English speakers validated humor segments, while 15 Indonesian participants rated translation effectiveness on a three-point scale (entirely, partially, or lost). Findings revealed 12 techniques, with Literal Translation (24.78%), Linguistic Compression (16.37%), and Modulation (15.04%) most frequent. Surprisingly, Literal Translation succeeded most often (19.56% of fully preserved humor), while Adaptation and Compensation underperformed. Overall, 53.91% of translations retained the humor fully, underscoring the efficacy of specific techniques for mockumentary-style satire. The study highlights the importance of flexible, audience-tailored strategies in subtitling deadpan humor and provides empirical insights to audiovisual translation research, particularly for understudied genres such as mockumentaries. Practical implications for subtitling practice and training are discussed.

Abstract

This research examines the representation and ideological construction of “Color Blindness” in the film The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock, using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach. The purpose of this study is to answer three main questions: (a) how colorblindness is portrayed in story; (b) How is colorblind community constructed in the story; and (c) How does colorblind community socially construct a power relation in the story. The findings of the analysis demonstrate that The Blind Side not only tells an inspiring story of Michael Oher’s life change but also represents the narrative’s dominance from a white perspective and the inclination to simplify the complexities of racial relations. The portrayal of the Tuohy family as white saviors, as well as Michael Oher being held in stereotypes, subtly emphasizes racial hierarchy. In addition, the movie contains forms of prejudice camouflaged in positive tales, which overlook the context of systemic injustice.  This study adds to media studies by demonstrating how colorblind ideology in popular media may be a tool of symbolic domination, masking issues of racism and socioeconomic inequality. It emphasizes the importance of critical readings of media representations to understand their influence on social constructions of race, power, and identity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of rule-based artificial intelligence (AI) applications, such as Duolingo, Grammarly, Babbel, and ELSA Speak, on the English language proficiency of Thai high school students. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, data were collected through questionnaires and in-depth interviews with 30 purposively selected students who actively used AI-based language learning tools. The quantitative findings show that AI usage has a significant yet limited impact, explaining 13.8% of the variance in students’ English-speaking ability. Qualitative results revealed that students perceived AI applications as helpful for improving grammar and pronunciation, though less effective for complex language tasks requiring contextual understanding. Although the sample size restricts generalizability, this study highlights the potential of AI as a complementary tool in English learning and underscores the importance of aligning AI use with pedagogical strategies suited to the Thai educational and cultural context.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the structure, meaning, and cultural values embedded in the oral tradition of Mantau, performed during the Kenduri Sko ritual in Lempur Tengah Village, Kerinci Regency. As a form of oral literature, Mantau consists of rhythmic poetic verses sung during the traditional Tauh dance. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method using a structuralist approach. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews with 12 informants—including Mantau performers, traditional leaders, and cultural experts—and documentation of three live performances over a three-month period. The analysis draws on theories of structuralism (Nurgiyantoro), meaning (Chaer; Abdullah), and cultural values (Djamaris). Findings reveal that Mantau lyrics possess distinct physical structures, including specific diction, rhyme, figurative language, and rich imagery. Internally, they reflect themes of gratitude, spirituality, social harmony, and moral values. The meanings conveyed span lexical, grammatical, and cultural domains, highlighting the Kerinci community’s worldview. The cultural values embedded in Mantau encompass religious devotion, harmonious coexistence with nature, social cohesion, and self-reflection. These findings underscore Mantau not merely as ritualistic entertainment but as a vital medium for intergenerational transmission of Kerinci identity and values, offering broader implications for oral literature preservation in a modernizing world.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of derivational suffixes found in the short story The Nightingale and the Rose by Oscar Wilde. The background of this research lies in the importance of understanding word formation processes through derivational suffixes in literary texts, which enrich the meaning and function of words. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with documentation as the data collection technique. The data was taken from the eBook version of the story, downloaded from Project Gutenberg. The analysis is based on the theories of Plag (2003) and Katamba (1993), who classify derivational suffixes into four types: nominal, adjectival, verbal, and adverbial. The results show that there are 53 derivational suffixes found, consisting of 24 adjectival (45.29%), 19 nominal (35.85%), 10 adverbial (18.87%), and 0 verbal (0%) suffixes. Adjectival suffixes are the most dominant, indicating that descriptive elements and characterization are central to the narrative. In conclusion, the use of derivational suffixes, especially adjectival ones, plays a significant role in shaping the stylistic and morphological richness of the literary text.
