Abstract

social media is inseparable from the daily lives of everyone, from young to old. At least one social media account is owned by everyone and many even have more than two social media platforms which is especially true for students who are trying to learn English independently outside of class. This study aims to explore how EFL students utilize social media to help them learn English responsibly through self-directed learning. This study uses a qualitative research design with narrative inquiry, and the data collection instruments used are in-depth interviews and documents. Three (3) students from Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta participated in this study through purposive sampling, where they actively use social media and learn English from there through SDL as a journey to develop their respective abilities and needs. Data analysis was conducted through thematic analysis, and the results showed that although social media was initially used for entertainment, it also became a supporting resource in helping individuals learn English according to their respective speeds, interests, and needs. They gain knowledge in terms of vocabulary, phrases, sentences, etc., which broadens their insights, increases their motivation and confidence, and provides them with easy access, space, and a supportive community. However, behind this flexibility, there is also an impact in the form of a lack of structured study, many distractions, inappropriate content, internet limitations causing dependency, and lack of direct feedback. This research highlights the important point that the success of SDL learning through social media greatly depends on students' critical thinking skills, self-control, initiative, and reflectiveness in managing social media throughout the English learning process.

Abstract

Academic writing is an essential academic component in higher education. Although EFL graduates have undergraduate writing experience, this does not always imply that the academic writing process will be simpler at the graduate level. At this level, writing requirements grow more complex, including precise language, logical organization, and in-depth analysis, as they are expected to meet the high standards of academic writing inherent in advanced study. As a result, the purpose of this study is (1) to explore the difficulties faced by students in academic writing through students' stories and (2) to investigate the strategies that students apply to cope with difficulties. This study applies a qualitative research method called narrative inquiry research. This research relied on three graduate students in English education as sources, with data acquired through in-depth interviews. The findings revealed that EFL students in higher education struggle with the complexity of academic writing rules, organizing ideas, linguistic barriers, and emotional stress. To overcome this, they employed a variety of strategies, including free writing, seeking feedback from peers or lecturers or utilizing AI tools, regulating emotions, and referring to writing models.  In a sense, these findings demonstrate that academic writing is more than just communicating ideas in writing, it is an intellectual and emotional process that may develop the way students think, feel, and express knowledge. Empathetic and supportive learning encourages them to acquire writing strategies while also developing independence, self-confidence, and reflective awareness, all of which serve as the basis for strong and empowered academic writers.

Abstract

Forensic linguistics research in Indonesia has experienced significant development. Based on 200 articles from Google Scholar and processed using VosViewer, forensic linguistics research examines many cases of insult, defamation, good, hearing, regulation, and blasphemy. So, the research analyzes the threats in Sampang Madura. This research aims to describe the linguistic features in the case of threatening criminal offense in Sampang Madura. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques using documentation techniques. The data source in this research is obtained from the official website of the Supreme Court (https://putusan3.mahkamahagung.go.id/direktori.html). The data in the research is the Decision of Sampang District Court Number 126/Pid.B/2014/PN Spg. The researcher used a note-taking technique to collect language containing threatening elements. To analyze the data, the researcher used the theoretical approaches of pragmatics, sociolinguistics, and systemics functional. The results showed that the use of language in the case of criminal acts of threatening in Sampang Madura fulfills the elements of threatening as stated in Article 89 of the Criminal Law Code (KHUP). Abstract

Digital literacy in the context of social media use has become an important aspect of English language learning for students. However, despite the increasing integration of digital technologies in education, there remains a gap in understanding how students’ use of social media as part of their digital literacy relates to their intrinsic motivation for learning English. This study aims to examine how digital literacy in social media use influences high school students' intrinsic motivation in EFL learning. It focuses on two dimensions of intrinsic motivation: (1) effort and commitment in learning English and (2) imagination of the future with English. A quantitative method using an adapted questionnaire was employed, involving 220 high school students aged 14–21 in the JABODETABEK area. Regression analysis revealed that digital literacy in social media use significantly affects two dimensions of high school students’ intrinsic motivation: effort and commitment in learning English (R² = 0.221, F = 63.24, p < 0.001) and imagination of the future with English (R² = 0.209, F = 58.84, p < 0.001), both indicating medium effect sizes. Furthermore, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) confirmed a significant simultaneous effect on both motivational constructs (F = 45.2, p < 0.001). These findings suggest that digital literacy in social media use can be an effective strategy to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation in EFL learning. Therefore, this study recommends that EFL teachers thoughtfully integrate selected social media platforms into learning activities to support both digital literacy and motivation.

Abstract

Multimodality has become a crucial component of 21st-century learning as students increasingly engage with diverse modes of communication in their daily lives. While multimodality has been widely studied, limited attention has been given to its development in English Language Teaching (ELT) within higher education. This study fills that gap by mapping global research trends, leading contributors, and thematic directions through a bibliometric analysis using the Scopus database. A total of 265 documents were initially retrieved, and 184 English-language journal articles published between 2015 and 2024 were included for analysis. Data were processed using VOSviewer to visualize keyword co-occurrence and identify emerging research clusters. The findings reveal that China is the most productive country with 58 publications, followed by the United States with 23, and that National Yunlin University of Science and Technology is the leading institutional contributor. Six thematic clusters were identified, covering multimodality, discourse analysis, digital storytelling, and teacher education. These insights provide a comprehensive overview of the field’s evolution and offer practical implications for educators and researchers aiming to enhance multimodality and pedagogical innovation within higher education.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the lack of competent English teachers on student learning in rural schools, focusing on a case study of Nurul Hasan Plus High School. The shortage of English teachers in the 3T (remote, frontier, and outermost) areas has been shown to hamper academic development and reduce student motivation. Through an exploratory qualitative case study approach involving interviews, observations, and documentation, data were collected from 1 principal, 1 substitute teachers, and 4 students. The findings show that schools must rely on substitute teachers from other fields, resulting in inconsistent learning and declining quality. Students feel bored, lack enthusiasm, and experience difficulties in mastering basic skills such as reading, writing, and speaking. Efforts such as self-study using digital media or simple assignments cannot replace the role of professional teachers, while institutional solutions such as the placement of non-specialist teachers are only temporary. This condition widens the educational gap between rural and urban areas. This condition widens the educational gap between rural and urban areas. The study highlights how teacher shortages directly disrupt English learning processes in rural settings and underscores the need for systemic measures to ensure equitable access to qualified English teachers.

Abstract

E-books have emerged as an important learning tool that supplements traditional resources, and rapid technological advancements have brought about significant changes in education. Because they provide widespread and early access, e-books are an essential way to meet the demands of 21st-century skills. Despite the effectiveness and technological challenges of e-books, there is a study shortage addressing in-depth qualitative investigation of students' subjective experiences in the learning context. In order to create a more effective curriculum, this study aims to ascertain students' experiences, emotions, and use of e-books in the learning process. 36 grade XI 7 students from SMA Negeri 2 Kotabumi participated in this study, which employed a qualitative descriptive method. A single tool, a 12-item open-ended questionnaire, was used to gather the data, which were then subjected to qualitative systematic content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that students' experiences are dualistic. Many had positive experiences: e-books considerably helped conceptual understanding, offered simple access, mobility, and cost-effectiveness, and delivered enhanced academic performance. On the other hand, this experience is offset by significant challenges, namely distractions from other app notifications (resulting in loss of focus), visual fatigue, and technical constraints (signal/battery). This paradox shows that comfortable learning is not always ensured by digital efficiency. E-books are a vital tool in the digital age and efficiently facilitate self-directed learning. To ensure a balanced and ideal learning experience, however, environmental challenges necessitate that educators and schools adopt digital policies that reduce distractions and incorporate e-books as an enrichment resource rather than a total replacement.

Abstract

This study examines teachers’ perceptions of bilingualism and bilingual education in Indonesia, focusing on their conceptual understanding as well as perceived challenges and opportunities for implementation. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through questionnaires from 16 teachers and in-depth interviews with five teachers across elementary, secondary, and inclusive education settings. The findings indicate that while teachers generally acknowledge the cognitive and social benefits of bilingualism, several barriers impede effective bilingual education. Notably, 68.8% of teachers identified inadequate training as a major challenge, and 62.6% pointed to limited instructional resources and curriculum misalignment. Despite these obstacles, teachers recognized substantial opportunities to strengthen bilingual education, including enhanced professional development, greater community involvement, and increased use of technology to support language learning. These insights underscore the need for targeted policy support and capacity-building initiatives to improve the quality and sustainability of bilingual education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study analyzes the application of the Generosity and Approbation Maxims in the animated film Kung Fu Panda 4, based on Leech’s (1983) theory and Holmes’s (1992) framework on social factors influencing their use. Using a descriptive qualitative method, nine utterances from the main characters were analyzed through non-participant observation and note-taking. The findings reveal that both maxims are expressed through self-sacrifice, offering help, and praising others, which strengthen interpersonal relationships, demonstrate solidarity, and reflect each character’s personality. The study highlights the crucial role of politeness in maintaining positive communication within animated films.
