Abstract

This study is a systematic literature review on the integration of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) with digital tools to improve EFL students' writing skills. This approach is considered to encourage authentic language use, cognitive and affective engagement in writing learning. This review analyzed empirical studies from Scopus, DOAJ, and Google Scholar published between 2016-2025, with groupings based on themes, strategies, and challenges found. Results show that the integration of TBLT and digital technology significantly improves grammatical accuracy, vocabulary development, paragraph structure and text coherence. In addition, this approach also supports collaborative learning, creativity and digital literacy. However, challenges such as lack of teacher training, infrastructure limitations and students' digital competency gaps remain obstacles. The studies recommend continuous training, increased access to technology and mentoring programs as solutions. The findings emphasize the importance of systemic support, pedagogical adaptation and long-term research to ensure effective and sustainable implementation of digital-based TBLT.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) curriculum in developing intercultural communication (ICC) competencies among students of English language education. This area currently lacks empirical evidence in the Indonesian higher education context. Using a mixed-methods design with a sequential explanatory model, quantitative data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire based on Kirkpatrick’s four-level evaluation model and Byram’s ICC framework, and further expanded upon through semi-structured interviews. The study involved 82 questionnaire respondents and five interview participants, selected using purposive sampling to capture the diverse experiences of students who had participated in MBKM for at least one semester. Findings indicate that 82.9% of students found the learning methods easy to understand, and 67% rated the material as relevant to their academic needs, reflecting positive outcomes at Kirkpatrick’s Levels 1 through 4. Students also reported increased cultural awareness and opportunities for authentic interactions, aligning with the five ICC dimensions in Byram’s model. However, challenges persist, including gaps in interdisciplinary understanding, heavy workloads, and inconsistent support from lecturers. These results suggest that MBKM has the potential to be a transformative platform for developing linguistic, cultural, and collaborative skills, provided that curriculum coordination and pedagogical reinforcement for lecturers are systematically implemented. Practical implications include structured study load management, standardized feedback mechanisms, and intercultural pedagogy training for lecturers. Limitations include its single-semester scope, limited participant diversity, and reliance on self-reported data, highlighting the need for multi-institutional longitudinal research that combines perception-based and performance-based measures.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of insertional code-mixing in the YouTube podcast conversation between Merry Riana and Cinta Laura, focusing on the forms, functions, and motivations behind its use. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the research analyzes verbatim transcriptions of the podcast episode “Cantik, Pintar & Sukses, Cinta Laura Merasa Tidak Bahagia Dalam Hidupnya?” (2022), which has a duration of 65 minutes. A total of 15 instances of insertional code-mixing were identified and analyzed using Muysken’s (2000) theoretical framework. The study specifically investigates the insertion of English words and phrases into Indonesian syntactic structures. The findings reveal that Cinta Laura strategically employs code-mixing not merely as a linguistic habit but as a communicative tool. Insertions are used to emphasize ideas, express emotions, and construct her identity as a modern, reflective bilingual speaker. Examples show that English insertions enhance clarity, add philosophical depth, carry prestigious value, and foster emotional intimacy with the audience. In conclusion, Cinta Laura’s use of intra-sentential code-mixing is a dynamic linguistic practice that enriches her communication and shapes her public persona. Her selective use of English terms within Indonesian sentences enables more precise and impactful message delivery. This study underscores the broader significance of code-mixing as a sophisticated strategy for bilingual speakers in digital environments. It highlights how bilingual individuals leverage their linguistic repertoire to navigate complex topics, express vulnerability, and build stronger connections with online audiences.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic function of coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences within the transcript of Adam Sandler’s stand-up comedy video Best of The Sandman. It focuses on syndetic coordination and the constituent structure of compound sentences, illustrated through tree diagrams. The data were collected through observation by transcribing and analyzing the comedic monologue. This qualitative study draws on three linguistic frameworks: Oshima & Hogue (2007) for sentence type classification, Aarts et al. (2006) for coordination theory, and Brown & Miller (2020) for syntactic structure analysis. The findings reveal that only four of the seven FANBOYS coordinating conjunctions were used in the transcript and, but, or, and so with and being the most frequent, appearing in 67 out of 81 compound sentences (82.72%). Coordinating conjunctions are shown to play a crucial role in shaping humor and maintaining coherence throughout the performance. The tree diagram analysis further clarifies the syntactic relationships within compound sentences, underscoring the value of syntax in understanding spoken discourse in comedic contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and explain the types and functions of assertive speech acts used in Donald Trump’s 2025 inauguration speech. The data were taken from a video entitled “Donald Trump Inauguration Speech 2025” uploaded on the official CNN YouTube Channel (accessed on February 5, 2025, with a duration of 23 minutes and 14 seconds, and 5.8 million views at the time of analysis). This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, referring to Searle’s (1979) theory of illocutionary speech acts. The findings show that out of 56 assertive utterances, there are five types of assertive speech acts: claiming (25%), stating (21.43%), complaining (19.64%), reporting (17.86%), and explaining (16.07%). The claiming type was the most frequently used, indicating that Trump often emphasized his beliefs and evaluations of the political situation to strengthen his message and shape the audience’s perception. This study expands the application of speech act theory in political contexts and provides insight into how language is strategically used to build legitimacy, trust, and a leader’s image.

Abstract

This study investigates the critical role of media framing in geopolitical conflict by analyzing the coverage of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's denial of the Gaza famine, a claim directly contradicted by international humanitarian reports. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Robert Entman's framing theory (Problem Definition, Causal Diagnosis, Moral Judgment, and Suggested Remedies), we conducted a comparative analysis of news articles from two ideologically distinct outlets: Al Jazeera Arabic and CNN Arabic. The analysis reveals fundamentally divergent framing strategies. Al Jazeera utilized a decisive Accountability Frame, defining the problem as a "blatant lie" against established humanitarian fact and diagnosing the cause as the "Israeli war of annihilation" and ongoing blockade. Its moral judgment was strongly condemnatory, leading to a proposed political solution (immediate lifting of the siege). Conversely, CNN Arabic adopted a cautious Debate and Juxtaposition Frame, defining the problem as a conflict of high-stakes political claims. It presented an ambiguous causal diagnosis by balancing Netanyahu's denial with counter-data on malnutrition deaths, and implicitly proposed an information solution (transparency and independent journalistic access). This ideological divergence confirms that media alignment dictates narrative construction in highly sensitive conflicts. The findings highlight the significance of discourse linguistics and critical discourse analysis as effective tools for uncovering the hidden agendas and ideological biases embedded in news texts. By analyzing linguistic choices, this research demonstrates how language actively shapes, rather than merely reports, social and political reality.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse surrounding multicultural society's perception of inter-tribal marriages in Lamasi District, Luwu Regency, through a discourse analysis lens. As Indonesia represents a diverse archipelago with numerous ethnic groups, inter-tribal marriages serve as crucial indicators of social integration and cultural harmony. This research investigates how community members in Lamasi District construct and articulate their views on marriages across tribal boundaries, exploring the tensions between traditional cultural preservation and modern multicultural coexistence.  The study employs critical discourse analysis to examine verbal and written communications among community members, religious leaders, traditional authorities, and married couples themselves. Data collection encompasses in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and analysis of public discourse in community settings. The analysis reveals complex negotiations between maintaining cultural identity and embracing diversity, highlighting both acceptance and resistance patterns within the multicultural framework of Lamasi District.  Findings indicate that perceptions of inter-tribal marriages are shaped by multiple factors including generational differences, educational background, economic considerations, and religious interpretations. While younger generations demonstrate greater openness toward cross-cultural unions, traditional community structures continue to influence marriage decisions significantly. The research identifies specific discourse patterns that either promote harmonious integration or reinforce tribal boundaries, providing insights into the mechanisms through which multicultural societies navigate cultural diversity.  This study contributes to understanding how discourse shapes social attitudes in multicultural contexts and offers implications for promoting social cohesion in diverse Indonesian communities. The findings may inform policy development and community programs aimed at fostering inclusive multicultural societies while respecting cultural heritage.
