Abstract

This study investigated the impact of HAINC-Integrated NotebookLM AI feedback on EFL students’ writing performance at IAIN Parepare. The study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method combined with a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) questionnaire. The participants consisted of 23 students from the English Education Study Program selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used in this study were a writing test and a TAM-based questionnaire. The writing assessment focused on four components: content and ideas, organization and structure, language and style, and grammar and punctuation. The treatment was conducted using NotebookLM integrated with the Human-AI Interactive Negotiation Competence (HAINC) protocol, which applied Socratic interaction, progressive prompting, and the “Three-Try Rule” to encourage active learner engagement during revision activities. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance after the implementation of the AI feedback system, as indicated by the significance value of 0.003 (<0.05). Furthermore, the TAM questionnaire results showed that students demonstrated a high level of technology acceptance toward NotebookLM AI feedback in terms of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward using AI, and behavioral intention to use the technology. The study concludes that HAINC-Integrated NotebookLM AI feedback effectively improves students’ writing performance and positively supports AI-assisted learning in EFL writing instruction

Abstract

This paper analyzes the attainment of discursive authority of war survivors portrayed in Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea. One of the main characters, Emilia, is constructed by the narrator as a resilient young Polish woman who experiences sexual violence during World War II. However, the narrative concludes with her death in the sinking of Wilhelm Gustloff, raising questions about the limitations of female agency in war narratives. Through Susan Lanser’s feminist narratology, this study first analyzes the narrative voices employed by the war survivor. It further examines how these voices contribute to the construction of discursive authority within the novel. Furthermore, the paper explores the limitations of female discursive authority, particularly through the portrayal of Emilia’s death. Using qualitative methods, the primary data consist of narrations or utterances that represent experiences of oppression, forms of resistance, and the construction of female identity within patriarchal wartime structures. The findings reveal that Emilia’s character achieves discursive authority through personal and communal voices. However, this authority remains constrained by larger social and power structures. Emilia’s death demonstrates that obtaining voice does not necessarily guarantee complete freedom from patriarchal silencing. Therefore, this study contributes to feminist narratology by foregrounding the limitations of discursive authority in war narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the structure of discourse on Nadia Omara's podcast using the Critical Discourse Analysis (AWK) model of Teun A. Van Dijk. The focus of this research is to examine the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure in the podcast narrative, especially in the episode "Kalomba" from Central Sulawesi. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with data in the form of narrative text obtained through direct observation of podcasts. The collection technique carried out is by collecting data by listening, watching, and taking notes, then followed by data analysis techniques using Van Dijk's social cognition approach and Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis model which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn. The results of the study show that in the macro structure, the main theme raised is the mystical experience experienced by a family in a remote area that reflects people's belief in folklore and urban legends. In the superstructure, it was found that podcasts are systematically arranged through introductions, content, and closing sections so that they are able to build tension and emotional engagement of listeners. Meanwhile, in the microstructure, the use of semantic elements (setting, detail, intent, and presumption), syntax (inductive and coherent sentences), as well as stylistic and rhetorical elements such as expressive diction, hyperbole, and rhetorical questions are found to be effective in strengthening the horror atmosphere.

Abstract

Arabic language learning at lower secondary school level often faces various challenges, such as low student motivation and a lack of engaging and innovative teaching materials. Although a number of studies have examined the use of visual media in language learning, few have systematically developed illustrated comic books specifically for Arabic language learning at Islamic lower secondary schools within the context of local Indonesian culture this gap forms the basis of this research. This study aims to develop illustrated comic-based Arabic language learning materials for Year 8 students at Al-Ulum Terpadu Islamic Junior High School in Medan using the Research and Development (R&D) method with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Data were collected through observation, interviews, validation questionnaires, and learning outcome tests. The results of the subject matter expert validation showed a feasibility percentage of 87.5%, whilst the media expert validation yielded 85.0%; both fell within the ‘highly feasible’ category. The pilot test with students yielded an average positive response score of 88.3%, with a learning gain (N-Gain) of 0.62, which falls within the moderate-to-high category. Unlike Arabic language learning materials, which are generally text-based, the illustrated comic media developed in this study integrates contextual visual narratives with vocabulary and dialogue content in a cohesive manner, thereby making a tangible contribution to the innovation of Arabic language learning materials in Islamic secondary schools.

Abstract

Despite the growing scholarly interest in the Love-Based Curriculum (LBC), empirical research examining its implementation in Arabic language instruction remains limited. Most existing studies have discussed LBC from conceptual and general educational perspectives, leaving its practical application in language learning contexts underexplored. This study investigates the management of Arabic language learning through the LBC approach at State Islamic Senior High School, a state Islamic senior high school in Riau Province, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation involving two Arabic language teachers and two Grade XI students selected purposively. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings reveal that the LBC approach fosters harmonious, humanistic, and dialogic teacher–student relationships; promotes positive character traits such as discipline, responsibility, empathy, and religiosity; and facilitates the internalization of spiritual, social, and moral values through Qur’anic integration, religious routines, and humanistic classroom practices. The study further demonstrates that character development occurs through supportive emotional relationships and meaningful value-based learning experiences. This research contributes to the field of Arabic language education by providing empirical evidence that the Love-Based Curriculum can serve as an effective instructional management framework that integrates linguistic learning, character formation, and spiritual development within an Islamic secondary school context.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of mental verbs and the forms of deception found in the utterances of Jessica Kumala Wongso in the cyanide coffee case through a forensic linguistics approach. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data consisted of Jessica Kumala Wongso’s verbal utterances obtained from television interviews, documentaries, and digital media related to the cyanide coffee case. The data were collected through observation, transcription, reading, and note-taking techniques. The analysis was conducted by identifying, classifying, and interpreting mental verbs as well as forms of deception based on Paul Ekman’s theory of deception. The findings revealed four types of mental verbs used in the utterances, namely affective, perceptive, cognitive, and desiderative mental verbs. Among these types, affective and cognitive mental verbs were the most dominant. The use of affective mental verbs reflected emotional emphasis and attempts to build a particular psychological image, while cognitive mental verbs indicated uncertainty, hesitation, and the reduction of responsibility toward the information conveyed. In addition, the study identified five forms of deception, namely direct lie, concealment, evasion, strategic deception, and false belief. The most dominant forms of deception were concealment and evasion, which were realized through indirect statements, uncertainty expressions, and avoidance strategies. The findings indicate that mental verbs can function as linguistic indicators in detecting deception within legal communication. This study contributes to the development of forensic linguistics, particularly in analyzing language as an indicator of deception in interviews and legal investigations

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the form and function of anaphora and cataphore in the dialogue of the film "Dia Angkasa", a pragmatic study. Despite its popularity, this film is still a topic that is not explored as an object that has not been studied academically, especially in pragmatic studies, and the combination of concepts between anaphora and cataphore with a pragmatic approach in one study is a potential for new research. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, with data collection through listening, recording, and dialogue documentation techniques in the film. The data analysis technique in this study uses techniques from the Miles and Huberman approach, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn.  The results of the research data findings show that this film uses twelve anaphora references which are divided into six persona pronouns, and six demonstrative pronouns. Meanwhile, the cataphore reference has seven data divided into six persona pronouns, and one demonstrative pronoun. These two references have a function to avoid repeating the same words so as to create language efficiency, maintain the continuity of the storyline, and in each form the pronoun has a different function, where the persona pronoun refers to one or more people in the scope of the conversation, while the demonstrative pronoun becomes a tool to point to something that has already been mentioned or that will just be mentioned. Thus, this study illustrates those pragmatic elements, especially anaphora and cataphores, play a major role in creating deep meaning, as well as maintaining the continuity of the story, and making language efficient.

Abstract

Arabic speaking proficiency (maharah kalam) remains a central challenge in Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. While communicative strategies have been widely discussed theoretically, few studies have examined their systematic implementation in specific madrasah contexts. This study investigates the strategies employed in the Arabic language learning programme at Private Islamic Senior High School Medan to develop students’ maharah kalam, with particular attention to the role of the language environment (bi’ah lughawiyah). Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with Arabic teachers and students, and documentation analysis. Findings reveal that the key strategies implemented include muhadasah (conversation) practice, daily vocabulary provision, dialogue and role-play exercises, and the creation of an Arabic-immersive school environment. The language environment (bi’ah lughawiyah) emerged as the most influential factor in improving speaking fluency, as it provided students with continuous communicative practice beyond formal classroom instruction. Supporting factors included teacher creativity and extracurricular language activities, while the main inhibiting factors were limited student vocabulary and low self-confidence. The study concludes that communicative, practice-oriented strategies embedded within an active language environment are effective in gradually improving maharah kalam. These findings contribute practical insights for Arabic language educators and Islamic educational institutions aiming to design more effective speaking-focused learning programmes.

Abstract

This study aims to develop interactive learning media based on Adobe Flash CS6 integrated with Malay Deli local wisdom to improve students’ learning interest and moral character in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at an Integrated Islamic Elementary School. The background of this research is rooted in the limited use of innovative media in elementary Islamic education, where conventional teaching methods often lead to low student engagement and weak internalization of moral values. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The study was conducted at SD IT Ummi A’yuni, Perbaungan, North Sumatra, involving fifth-grade students, teachers, and expert validators. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, questionnaires, validation sheets, and learning outcome assessments. The developed media integrated multimedia elements such as text, animation, audio, video, and interactive quizzes with local cultural values reflecting Malay Deli traditions, politeness, cooperation, and Islamic ethics. The findings revealed that the media achieved a high level of feasibility based on evaluations by media experts, language experts, and subject matter experts. Students demonstrated increased enthusiasm, participation, and understanding of moral concepts during the learning process. Furthermore, the use of Adobe Flash-based interactive media significantly enhanced students’ learning interest and strengthened their understanding of commendable moral behavior. The study concludes that integrating technology with local wisdom can create meaningful, contextual, and engaging learning experiences while simultaneously supporting character education in elementary Islamic schools. The findings also indicate that technology-based media can become an effective pedagogical innovation for strengthening Islamic values, student motivation, and culturally responsive education in the twenty-first century.
