Abstract

This study aims to develop interactive learning media based on Adobe Flash CS6 integrated with Malay Deli local wisdom to improve students’ learning interest and moral character in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning at an Integrated Islamic Elementary School. The background of this research is rooted in the limited use of innovative media in elementary Islamic education, where conventional teaching methods often lead to low student engagement and weak internalization of moral values. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. The study was conducted at SD IT Ummi A’yuni, Perbaungan, North Sumatra, involving fifth-grade students, teachers, and expert validators. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, questionnaires, validation sheets, and learning outcome assessments. The developed media integrated multimedia elements such as text, animation, audio, video, and interactive quizzes with local cultural values reflecting Malay Deli traditions, politeness, cooperation, and Islamic ethics. The findings revealed that the media achieved a high level of feasibility based on evaluations by media experts, language experts, and subject matter experts. Students demonstrated increased enthusiasm, participation, and understanding of moral concepts during the learning process. Furthermore, the use of Adobe Flash-based interactive media significantly enhanced students’ learning interest and strengthened their understanding of commendable moral behavior. The study concludes that integrating technology with local wisdom can create meaningful, contextual, and engaging learning experiences while simultaneously supporting character education in elementary Islamic schools. The findings also indicate that technology-based media can become an effective pedagogical innovation for strengthening Islamic values, student motivation, and culturally responsive education in the twenty-first century.

Abstract

This study explores how EFL teachers apply problem-focused coping (PFC) strategies, such as instructional adaptation, material modification, and remedial support, when teaching slow learners in inclusive classrooms. The study addresses a gap in the literature by examining teachers’ coping strategies within the context of Indonesian inclusive EFL classrooms, an area that remains underexplored. Using a narrative inquiry approach, the study involved two female EFL teachers from a private inclusive school in Medan, Indonesia, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews focusing on teachers’ professional experiences in managing heterogeneous classrooms. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s framework. The findings reveal that teachers actively adjusted instructional practices, modified learning materials, and implemented remedial activities to address slow learners’ cognitive challenges. These strategies not only enhanced students’ classroom engagement but also helped reduce teachers’ emotional burden. The study highlights the importance of strengthening inclusive education training for EFL teachers to support the effective implementation of active coping strategies in diverse classroom settings.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a foundational element of English language acquisition, yet many learners continue to struggle with it in classroom settings. This study explored how the Froggy Jump game, accessed through Educaplay media, affected vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Botupingge. A quantitative approach was employed using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. Twenty-eight students from class 7A were selected as the sample through purposive sampling from a population of 246 students across three grade levels. The intervention was conducted over six meetings, with a vocabulary test administered before and after the treatment to measure learning gains. A significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores was established through paired-sample t-test analysis, which returned a p-value of 0.000, considerably lower than the 0.05 significance threshold. The mean score improved markedly from 45.57 to 85.57, demonstrating a substantial gain in vocabulary mastery. These findings confirm that the use of the Froggy Jump game had a positive and meaningful effect on students' vocabulary learning outcomes. The findings of this study strengthen existing scholarly evidence regarding the effectiveness of game-based digital media in EFL instruction, while also offering actionable implications for language educators seeking to enhance student engagement and vocabulary acquisition through technology-integrated learning.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a substantial aspect of communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), though systematic phonetic errors frequently disrupt understandability. The research aims to identify the types and reasons for English consonant pronunciation errors made by Indonesian EFL learners at the university level. Using a quantitative-descriptive design within an Error Analysis framework, the study investigated an oral corpus comprising 3,920 words collected from 10 pre-service English teachers through reading tasks and semi-structured interviews. Results show that substitution constitutes the most common error strategy (68%) and particularly for phonemes not present in learners' native phonetic inventory, namely dental fricatives (/ð/, /θ/) and voiced labiodental fricative (/v/). In addition, omission errors (27%) were common in the word-final consonant part, reflecting phonetic constraints and a preference for syllabic simplification, while insertion errors were rare (5%). These results underscore the role of language interference and articulatory markedness, demonstrating a paradox in achievement whereby successful attainment of general language skills does not guarantee phonological allegiance. In the context of pedagogy, this has implications for EFL curricula, specifically the incorporation of explicit phonetic awareness instruction by structuring focused articulatory interventions into syllabi to minimize systematic pronunciation errors effectively.

Abstract

Following Stuart Hall's theory of representation, this research uses forensic linguistics to examine how violence and injustice are represented in the Saw (2004) movie. The research aims to uncover how language is used to construct ideological meanings surrounding violence and injustice in the film. Using a qualitative descriptive method and content analysis, the research focuses on the dialogues, monologues, and narrative elements in Saw (2004) that reflect acts of physical and verbal violence, discrimination, and violations of human rights. The findings reveal that language is employed not merely to drive the plot, but to shape psychological manipulation, moral dilemmas, and systems of control. Jigsaw’s use of commands, threats, and rhetorical devices portrays violence as moral retribution, while injustice is masked through coercive choices and oppressive structures. Forensic linguistic markers such as modality, imperative forms, metaphor, and evaluative language play a central role in constructing these representations. This research contributes to forensic linguistics and English education by demonstrating how language in popular media can encode power relations and ideological messages, highlighting the need for critical media literacy in academic settings.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of integrating round-robin and collaborative writing techniques on the paragraph writing performance and engagement of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Employing a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group Design, the study involved 160 undergraduate students enrolled in compulsory writing courses, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Over six weeks, the experimental group received instruction through a combination of round-robin drafting and collaborative writing activities, while the control group received traditional, teacher-centered writing instruction. Students’ paragraph-writing ability was measured using a rubric-based writing test, and engagement was assessed using a multidimensional questionnaire covering behavioral, cognitive, affective, and emotional engagement. Results indicated that both groups showed significant improvement in paragraph writing performance; however, the experimental group achieved substantially higher posttest scores. Effect size analysis revealed a large impact of the integrated collaborative techniques (Cohen’s d = 3.12), compared to a moderate-to-large effect in the control group (d = 2.34). Normalized gain scores further confirmed the intervention’s superior effectiveness. Engagement findings showed high levels across all dimensions among students in the experimental group. These findings suggest that integrating round-robin and collaborative writing techniques provides an effective pedagogical approach for enhancing paragraph writing performance and fostering student engagement in EFL contexts. The study highlights the value of structured peer interaction and shared authorship in writing instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the stages of the hero’s journey theory within the Wish (2023) movie by highlighting hope, moral courage, and the power of emotions that drive change to people as the main strength of the heroism. It also aims to determine the presence of each stage as formulated by Joseph Campbell. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research focused on Asha, the main character, and her transformation through the narrative structure. The data were collected through careful observation of the movie, transcribing relevant scenes, and identifying each stage based on Campbell’s seventeen-stage model. The findings reveal that Asha’s journey completed all the steps in the departure stage such as the call to adventure, refusal of the call, supernatural aid, the crossing of the first threshold, the road of trials, and apotheosis. However, Asha passed four steps in initiation stage which are the road of trials, meeting with the goddess, apotheosis, and the ultimate boon. In the return stage, she only passed several steps which are crossing the return threshold, master of two worlds, and freedom to live. Despite this, Asha’s development and her efforts to bring back hope to the people of Rosas make her journey qualify as a hero’s journey.

Abstract

This research investigates the role of context in the semantic interpretation of ambiguity and polysemy in English news discourse. Using a qualitative descriptive approach and content analysis method, the study examines four selected news articles from BBC News and NBC News. The analysis identifies four main categories of ambiguity: contextual, type, relationship meaning, and source ambiguity. The most dominant type is contextual ambiguity, which often arises due to insufficient background information or vague expressions. The findings highlight how ambiguity and polysemy can hinder accurate interpretation and impact public understanding. Context proves crucial in determining meaning, especially in complex or sensitive news topics such as gender, crime, and environmental issues. This study emphasizes the need for media to present information transparently and for readers to be critically aware of linguistic nuances. The findings also contribute to improving communication effectiveness in translation, cross-cultural understanding, and natural language processing.
