Abstract

In Indonesian Islam, as in many Muslim societies, discourses on women have largely been shaped by male scholars, with patriarchal values from medieval traditions dominating classical interpretations. While feminist approaches often critique these established values, this study examines women’s agency through the concept of kodrat, viewed as a fluid construct in which women’s engagement is continually shaped by internal and external factors. Focusing on two prominent female scholars, Huzaimah Tahido Yanggo and Siti Musdah Mulia, the paper analyzes their Qur’anic interpretations and intellectual contributions to Islamic knowledge. Both scholars, while negotiating patriarchal norms, were significantly influenced by education, career opportunities, and constitutional protections that enabled broader epistemological engagement. Employing a descriptive-analytic method and Anthony Giddens’ theory of agency, the study explores how their thought reflects both structural constraint and the expansion of gender discourse. Data were analyzed by examining their exegetical frameworks and scholarly trajectories. The findings reveal that although they acknowledge conventional views, such as the husband’s role as family leader, their advanced training in Islamic sciences enabled them to extend interpretive horizons and establish significant precedents in feminist Qur’anic interpretation. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how female scholars navigate traditional frameworks to contribute meaningfully to the dialogue between Islamic scholarship and broader gender studies.

Abstract

The paper discusses the legal protection and gender justice in the case of child custody after divorce in Aceh, Indonesia. In this study, a qualitative socio-legal approach was employed to explore the causes and consequences of custody disputes, legal protection practices, judicial considerations, gender dynamics and institutional responses. The data were collected using in-depth interviews and document analysis. The participants were 12 people in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar and Pidie, consisting of divorced parents, judges, lawyers, mediators and advocates of child protection. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis. Findings revealed that economic hardship, domestic conflict and breakdown of communication were the major reasons for divorce and subsequent custody problems. The long-term parental conflict was found to be detrimental to the psychological and emotional health of children resulting in emotional insecurity, behavioral instability and loyalty conflicts between parents. Courts often took into account the best interest of the child, but post-divorce parenting arrangements often fell prey to patriarchal norms, with mothers usually regarded as the primary caregivers and fathers as the financial providers. Enforcement of child support obligations and other legal protection mechanisms remained inconsistent, particularly regarding meeting children's educational, health and psychosocial needs. The focus was on mediation, institutional co-operation and reducing parental conflict and strengthening child-centred protection. This study concludes that the post-divorce situation in Aceh in terms of child protection and gender justice needs gender-sensitive legal approaches, better implementation of parental responsibilities, available psychosocial support, and coordinated institutional collaboration.

Abstract

Sexual violence against children remains a major legal and human rights issue in Indonesia, particularly in Aceh where formal criminal law operates in a unique socio-cultural environment shaped by Islamic values, customary norms (adat) and patriarchal gender relations. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how these legal, religious, cultural and institutional dimensions interact to shape gender-responsive protection for child victims of sexual violence in Aceh. The study aimed to explore gender perspectives on the protection provided by criminal law for child victims of sexual violence and to investigate institutional, socio-cultural, and psychosocial factors that influence their access to justice and recovery. This paper is based on a qualitative socio-legal study involving 12 participants selected purposively from Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar and Pidie. The participants are law enforcers, victim advocates, psychologists, DP3A/P2TP2A officers and family members of the victims. The data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews and were analyzed thematically. The findings showed that legal practices did not systematically incorporate gender-responsive and trauma-informed principles and that procedural requirements often prevailed over the psychological and emotional needs of the victims. Protection and recovery was further limited by social stigma, patriarchal norms, limited institutional capacity, inadequate professional training and weak inter-agency coordination. Complementary legal and psychosocial roles were played by law enforcement and victim assistance institutions. The study concludes that child protection in Aceh is affected by the interaction of formal criminal law, institutional practices and socio-cultural norms. To advance equitable and child-centered justice, it is essential to strengthen gender-responsive professional capacity, trauma-informed services, inter-agency coordination and culturally adaptive protection mechanisms.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of reasonable accommodations in inclusive elementary schools under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation (Permendikbudristek) No. 48 of 2023 through an Islamic values-based approach. Utilizing a qualitative multiple-case study design, empirical data were gathered across two inclusive elementary schools in Aceh Besar involving six purposively selected participants, comprising school principals, teachers, and parents. Data collection was executed through semi-structured in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and school policy document analysis, followed by thematic analysis using a hybrid deductive–inductive coding framework.  The findings reveal a persistent implementation gap between normative regulatory mandates and operational realities on the ground. Although school administrators and leaders demonstrate a strong commitment to admitting children with special needs, inclusive practices remain severely constrained by critical structural challenges. These include a total absence of special education teachers (GPK), insufficient professional training, limited budgetary support, scarce adaptive facilities, missing school-level standard operating procedures, and unestablished Disability Service Units (ULD). Nevertheless, the study underscores that integrating core Islamic values, specifically justice (‘adl), compassion (rahmah), and human dignity (karāmah insāniyyah), serves as an essential ethical foundation that sustains school-community commitment toward inclusivity. To bridge this policy-practice divide, the study recommends optimizing the institutionalization of Disability Service Units, enhancing teacher competencies through continuous training, and establishing an operational, Islamic-values-based inclusive education model to guarantee equitable, child-friendly learning environments.

Abstract

Gender inequality in the workplace persists, reflected in wage gaps, domestic role stereotypes, and patriarchal biases that limit women's career opportunities. In East Java, women's participation in the formal labor force reached only 36.32 percent in 2024, compared with 45.81 percent for men. This study addresses three research questions: (1) how do female workers in East Java understand empowerment in the context of work; (2) what forms of inequality and oppression do they experience and perceive; and (3) what strategies do they use to survive and thrive in the workplace. The study employs an interpretive phenomenological design with a bottom-up perspective that positions the narratives of female workers as the main subject of analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth online interviews with 20 female workers aged 25–35 from Jember, Malang, Surabaya, and Sidoarjo between May and June 2025, and analyzed following Widodo's (2014) analytical steps. The findings show that oppression is not always physically visible but appears as microaggressions, implicit bias, double standards, maternal bias, and unequal pay for equivalent positions. Norms once regarded as natural came to be questioned through critical awareness, which fostered individual agency and collective solidarity, such as forming women's groups and demanding gender equality training and paternity leave. This study emphasizes that genuine empowerment is not only a matter of economic access but also of structural and cultural transformation toward gender equality.

Abstract

Representations of resilient women have become increasingly prominent in popular culture, yet little is known about how female audiences interpret and negotiate these portrayals. This study aims to examine how Generation Z women interpret women’s resilience as represented in the music video Girls Never Die. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study combined Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis with Stuart Hall’s reception analysis. Semiotic analysis was first used to identify the preferred readings embedded in the video, followed by in-depth interviews with five Generation Z women who regularly consume K-pop content. Interview data were analysed deductively based on the identified preferred readings and classified into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions. The analysis identified four preferred readings: resilience develops through difficult experiences, solidarity among women strengthens resilience, women are capable of recovering from adversity, and the phrase Girls Never Die symbolizes women’s endurance. Most participants adopted dominant and negotiated readings. While they generally accepted the portrayals of resilience and female solidarity, several questioned whether the video simplified the complexity of women’s real-life struggles. Interpretations of the phrase Girls Never Die ranged from dominant to oppositional readings. The findings show that these five participants actively negotiated media meanings through their personal experiences and social contexts. The study highlights the value of examining both media representations and audience interpretations when understanding contemporary narratives of women’s resilience and empowerment in popular culture.

Abstract

Gender justice in Islamic education has frequently been examined through religious texts, institutional policies, and broader theological debates, while the everyday classroom experiences through which teachers interpret and enact gender justice remain less explored. This study examines how Islamic religious educators understand and construct gender justice in their everyday pedagogical practices. Using Clark Moustakas's descriptive phenomenological framework, the study involved five Islamic religious educators working in formal and non-formal educational institutions in Tasikmalaya and Ciamis, Indonesia. Data were generated through semi-structured in-depth interviews conducted in June 2025 and analyzed through epoché, horizonalization, clustering of invariant constituents into themes, and the construction of textural and structural descriptions followed by a composite synthesis. Five interrelated themes emerged: intuitive gender sensitivity, empathetic informal justice, the tension between uniformity and differentiation, institutional and environmental conditioning, and implicit gendered perceptions. The findings indicate that teachers generally enact gender justice through situational judgment, relational care, and responses to immediate classroom conditions rather than through explicitly articulated gender-responsive pedagogical frameworks. At the same time, gendered descriptions of student behavior may reproduce categorical expectations when they remain unexamined. Interpreted through critical pedagogy, the ethics of care, and gender performativity, the findings suggest that relational goodwill is an important foundation but requires structured critical reflection to prevent gendered assumptions from becoming normalized. The study contributes a localized empirical account of gender justice in Islamic classrooms and suggests that teacher development should incorporate reflective and gender-responsive pedagogical practices.
