Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the reflection of IRF (Initiation-Response-Feedback) in speaking class and investigating the dominant sequence among I, R and F. IRF is a pattern of classroom interaction found by Sinclair and Coulthard in 1975 that stands for teacher initiation, students’ response and feedback by teacher. Initiation is the movement in which teacher initiates an interaction to get the response of the students, then teacher gives feedback to the students’ response. To obtain the data, the researcher conducted classroom observation in speaking class in one university in West Java. The result showed that student response becomes the dominant sequence of IRF in speaking class. Furthermore, it is recommended that the teachers should maintain the effectiveness of classroom interaction and give much opportunity to the students to take role in classroom verbal interaction through reflecting the IRF pattern in teaching learning process particularly in speaking classroom.Keywords: IRF, classroom interaction, speaking class

Abstract

Self-editing has been considered an important part of writing process that helps improving writing ability and yet become a better writer. This is because by having self-editing, the students are able to recognize their own errors in their composition. Therefore, this current study was conducted to investigate the effect of self-editing on writing skill of twelfth grade students of SMAN 1 Lubuklinggau. The subject of this study consisted of 34 students of grade XII IPA 3. It was found that after experiencing the writing instruction with self-editing, the students’ writing skill improved significantly. The students have been very enthusiastic towards the teaching technique. Their score in writing increased from pre-test to the end of cycle II.  The result of pre-test showed that the average was 68. From 34 students in the class, only 7 students got the score   above 79 and 27 students got the score bellow 79. In addition, in cycle I, the students who got the score above Minimum Mastery Criteria were 12 or 35, 29% and those who got below the Minimum Mastery Criteria that were 22 or 69, 71%.  The average was 75. Finally, in cycle II, the students who got score above Minimum Mastery Criteria were 30 or 88. 24% and those who got below Minimum Mastery Criteria were 4 or 11. 76%.  The average score was 81.32. Hence, it can be concluded that self-editing is indeed effective in improving the writing performance of the students. In addition, they could make further revisions on their own errors. Through self-editing, the students were willing to provide further support to peers and learn from each other in the process of writing.Keywords: Self-editing, Discussion text, Writing

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate (1) the form of direct sentences on short story entitled The Lost “Beautifulness”, (2) analyze the purpose of the direct utterances in the short story, (3) show the kind of direct utterances in short story The Lost “Beautifulness”. The object used in this research are direct utterances of short story The Lost “Beautifulness”. The data were collected by observation method. The writer selecting the direct utterances which can be found in the short story. The result of the research showed that: (1) three forms of the direct utterances are declarative, interrogative and imperative sentence; (2) purposes of the utterances depend on the four factors; locution, illocution, perlocution and social context; (3) seven kinds of speech acts are assertive, performative, verdictive, expressive, directive, commisive and phatic utterances.Keywords: Speech act, Direct Utterance, Short Story

Abstract

Jane Eyre is a novel written in the early nineteenth century (1847). It depicts the English society of the upper, middle and lower class and their habits and attitudes towards life. The opening of the novel points to social class, wealth and marriage as its major theme. Throughout the novel, the relationship between social awareness of class and marriage, especially dealing with money or property are highlighted, the reason why society tends to consider about social class, money and property in finding a suitable partner to marry. This paper relies on the examples from the novel to show how nineteenth-century women imagined their marriage. In terms of women’s social rights and roles, Charlotte Bronte tries to open readers' eyes to the idea that women's abilities should not be limited only to the sphere of the family. Abstract

The integration of computer in the service of FL (Foreign Language) learning is expected to be inevitable in the future. It is seemingly due to (a) its considerable affordances for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners, (b) the characteristics of today’s learners as the Generation Z (González-Lloret & Ortega, 2014), and (c) the widespread use of the internet in the 21st century. This situation then leads to transforming CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) into WFLL (Web-Facilitated Language Learning) as an alternative paradigm for EFL teachers and learners. Furthermore, TBLT (Task-Based Language Teaching) is likely to serve as a pedagogical framework in designing the Web for the purpose of FL learning. The present study was therefore mainly aimed at (a) developing a particularly teacher-designed learning website, namely I Love Indonesia, and (b) investigating high school learners of English in Indonesia with different attitudes towards CALL (positive/moderate/negative) in correlation with how they perceive WFLL (agree/disagree) and perform web-based activities. Descriptive Statistics, IF Function in Excel, Correlation Analysis, and Independent-samples t-test were employed in the study. Finally, the findings of the study showed that (a) the website seems to benefit EFL learners in some certain aspects, and (b) positive attitude learners are likely to perceive more positively (agree) than moderate and negative attitude learners (disagree) on the use of the website for the purpose of language learning. A greater number of learners over a longer period of time should be taken into account when conducting further studies on the effectiveness of the website for EFL learners in order to be able to shed some light on learners’ language development. Keyword: attitude, perception, task-based language teaching, web-facilitated language learning

Abstract

The present study presents the perception of lecturers on the use of the first language in the foreign language classroom, particularly in a tourism vocational institution in a multilingual context. The participants were 2 lecturers teaching Hospitality English: one lecturer was teaching English for Front Office and one lecturer was teaching English for Food and Beverage. The data were collected through administering questionnaire and interview. The obtained data were analyzed qualitatively. The results show that lecturers perceived the use of the first language as positive and part of learning process. They used the first language mainly as a pedagogical device for clarification, for establishing rapport, saving time, and discipline. The findings might have significant implications for EFL language teachers regarding the facilitative effects of L1 use in the foreign language classrooms. The EFL teachers need to consider the EFL classroom context as a multilingual social space in which teachers and students take advantage of dynamic, creative and pedagogically effective use of both the target language and the learners.  Keywords: first language use, lecturers ‘perspective, multilingual context

Abstract

Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) is one of required courses in English Language Teaching which aims at connecting language and culture so that language learners can use foreign language appropriately, i.e. appropriate forms of language for appropriate context of situation. However, some obstacles usually occur during the course, for examples: students’ lack of understanding that lead to opinions stating that this is a boring and useless course, and large number of students within a class where lecturer must teach more than 40 students in one class. Considering the importance of CCU course as well as the needs to overcome the problems during this course, this paper proposes some particular teaching strategies to help students in apprehending CCU materials through students’ active participations. Active learning strategies are preferred by means of raising students’ participation and critical thinking so that the class would run more effectively. Other consideration in composing the strategies is to prepare English Education students to be future English language teachers by training their ability in teaching performance as well as connecting language and culture in English Language Teaching (ELT).  Keywords: language, culture, strategies, media, ELT

Abstract

This study attempts to find out conveyed messages in the movie from the realization of the appraisal and narrative structure as well as to describe the use of the Appraisal System to express LaGravenese's (a) Attitudes, (b)Engagement & (c) Graduation towards the main characters in Freedom Writers movie screenplay. Using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive approach for discourse appraisal system analysis, the result of this study reveals several messages of tolerance, earning respect and trust, honor diversity, and striving for success and trust from the realization of Appraisal and Narrative Structure either in the dialogues or monologues of Freedom Writers’ characters. The result from the Appraisal Devices realizing (a) Attitudes reveals that LaGravenese likes to express characters’ negative emotion explicitly than implicitly. He likes to express characters’ negative capability than other kinds of Judgments. He appreciates the characters using more Negative Value which denotes that in his opinion, they see each other negatively. (b)Engagement used in the screenplay describes that he emphasizes more on characters’ denial towards each other’s opinion and existence with the use of more Disclaim Heterogloss in the screenplay. (c)Graduation used in the screenplay describes that the use of more Sharpening Focus indicates he emphasizes on characters’ category boundary more than scaling of intensity.Keywords: Appraisal Devices, Attitude, Engagement, and Graduation.
