Abstract

An illustrated description of Triposporium novoguineensei Rifai sp. nov. is presented based on a specimen collected at Garaina, New Guinea.A special visitor award from the Australian Government enabled me to attend the 42nd Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) Congress held in August 1970 in Port Moresby (Territory of Papua and New Guinea), and to participate in a botanical and agricultural post-congress tour around the Territory. The ample opportunity to collect fungi during this tour was fully utilized and a specimen which appeared to represent an undescribed species of Triposporium was found in Garaina Tea Estate, Garaina, Territory of Papua.

Abstract

Nine species of Freycinetia are enumerated for Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia: F. angustifolia Blume, F. berbakensis Widjaja, Pasaribu & Hidayat, F. imbricata Blume, F. javanica Blume, F. kamiana B.C. Stone, F. rigidifolia Hemsl., F. sumatrana Hemsl., F. winkleriana Martelli and F. scabrosa Pasaribu & Widjaja,. The latest species is newly described. A key to the nine species in Jambi is provided.

Abstract

The desmid presently known as Mierasterias moebii (Borge) West & West is transferred back to the genus Euastrum where it was originally placed by its discoverer, together with its several varieties, for reasons that are discussed in detail. There are described one new variety, var. diplocanthylum from Australia, and one new forma, var. tetrachastriforme fa. latum from Borneo. New illustrations are given for Euastrum, turgidum Wall., and criteria are suggested for differentiating this plant from the closely similar E. moebii.

Abstract

Lindenbergia is represented in Asia by 7 species. Based on the hairiness of their ovaries L. muraria (Roxb.) Briihl (= L. urticifolia Lehm.) and L. indica (L.) Vatke (= L. polyantha Benth.) are reinstated as distinct species. I follow Bentham in including Lindenbergia in the tribe Gratioleae. Objection to the use of the aestivation of corolla as the only positive character for distinguishing subfamilies of the Scrophulariaceae is put forward; it is shown that several genera (Lindenbergia, Isoplexis, Lagotis, Erinus, Freylinia,, Phygelius and Mimulus) considered to belong to one subfamily actually have the aestivation character of the other subfamily. The occurrence of resupinatton of the flower in Dopatrium juncewm (Roxb.) Buch.-Ham. ex Benth. is recorded for the first time.

Abstract

VELDKAMP, J.F. 2008. The correct name for the Tetrastigma (Vitaceae) host of Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) in Malesiaand a (not so) new species. Reinwardtia 12(4): 261 – 265. ––The correct name for Tetrastigma lanceolarium auct.non Planch. or T. leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. (Vitaceae) in Malesia is T. rafflesiae Miq. The name T.lawsonii is superfluous and has been misapplied to a species here described as new.

Abstract

Mekongga is one of the highest mountains in Southeast Sulawesi. The Mekongga region was declared as protected forest in 1994, after logging had been done in this area. A floristic study of this forest was conducted from 2009 through 2011 by visiting the area twice a year, once each during the dry and wet seasons, and collecting specimens from the flowering and fruiting plants. Other species were also recorded, but most of them cannot be identified because the plants were too young or were not in flower or fruit at the time of collection.  Specimens of 855 species in 155 families were collected, of which 5% (44 species) are endemic to Sulawesi and 11% (91 species) are introduced species from China, South America, India, or even Madagascar.  In addition, new records for Sulawesi were collected from Mekongga for species originally recorded from Java (50 species), Malaysia (35 species), the Philippines (28 species), New Guinea (14 species), Sumatera (13 species), Borneo (11 species), Moluccas (4 species), and the Lesser Sunda Islands (3 species). Based on these data, it seems that species have mostly migrated to Mekongga from Java, then from Malaysia and the Philippines. More than 10 new species are proposed from this area, including a bamboo (Poaceae) and members of the families Orchidaceae, Gesneriaceae, Melastomataceae, Myrtaceae, and Araliaceae. Further study of the floristic account will be done, which can be used as baseline data in support of an important proposal to designate the Mekongga area as a national park.

Abstract

The genus Balanocarpus has been regarded as distinct by reason of its calyx lobes, which do not exceed the wooden nut but which enclose the very base of it,forming a five-lobed wooden cup by the equally though slightly enlarged strongly imbricate segments of the flowering calyx.Symington has called particular attention to the fact that it seemed to lack natural generic characters,viz.satisfactory and sharply marked distinctions from other groups, as was already superficially realised by his predecessorsIn agreement with earlier suggestions by Symington, Balanocarpus is.given up,it being an artificial genus.Many of its species are referable to Shorea.Of the latter,12 species are treated,7 of which are described as new.Editors Note.-Dr D. F. van Slooten was steadily continuing his revision of the Dipterocarpaceae when his untimely death put a stop to this most useful and painstaking task. During the last few years of his life I had the privilege to be consulted by Dr van Slooten regarding certain aspects of his work and this has made me somewhat familiar with the present paper and some of its problems.
