Abstract

Cullenia excelsa Wight in Pearson & Brown, Commerc. Timb. India 1: 141, t. 51 1932; Foxworthy in Philipp. J. Sci. Bot. 4: 500. 1909; Trotter, Common Comm. Timb. India 65. 1901. Foxworthy in Philip. J. Sci. Bot. 4: 500. 1909. Fruit collected in January 1958 from the tree cultivated in the Bogor. Botanical Garden (no. XVI H. 13) enables me to correct and emendate the description published in "Communication of the Forest Research Institute, Bogor" no. 51 (1956) and in Reinwardtia 4 : 69.1956. The ripe fruit are dirty green outside, they open on the branches and the seed falls out immediately. Each fruit contains from one to 5 seeds, the common number, however, is one, the others do not develop; the fruit becomes pseudo-unilocular. The chestnut brown seeds are completely enveloped by a lightbrown, somewhat glassy, slightly juicy and hardly sweet, furrowed aril of 2-4 mm thickness; the apical part of the aril is more or less fimbriate. AmorpknphoMus dixenii is described and illustrated; this new species is assigned to section Cimdaritm and key to Asiatic species of this section is presented. Chromosome number of this species is found to be 2n =28.

Abstract

When the type method was introduced in the "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature," it was stated that "a nomenclatural type is that constituent element to which the name of a group is permanently attached" and, further, that "the type of ..a generic name is a species and that of a species ..is usually a specimen or preparation. In some species, however, the type is a description or figure given by a previous 1 author" (Art. 18).No doubt, the type of a generic name is a species and that of a specific name a specimen (or its substitute). A species may be variously interpreted as to its limits; it may be narrowly or broadly conceived. It may receive a name, but it remains a species even if it has no name. It frequently occurs that a specific name is misapplied to a quite different species. Hence it is also evident that a species and a specific name are two intrinsically different notions, not at all identical and interchangeable. As quoted above, Art. 18 positively says that the type of a generic name is a species and does not refer to specific names. I believe this article really states what it wanted to convey in this respect, and is not an instance of unfortunate wording. A species comprises a vast number of individuals plants and of these some are preserved often only in part, or are subject to taxonomic study without preservation,and represent the specimens of the Rules; when the species is given a name, one of these is or afterwards becomes the type specimen. Thus a (type) species and a (type) specimen are different notions. In the binomial system a specific name is a combination of two words. The first part, or generic appellation, stands for a generic description,2 the second part, or specific epithet, for a specific description : a specific name roots in two different descriptions.Far more often than not these two are published on different occasions by different authors.

Abstract

Based on ethnobotanical data, agricultural practice and floristic analysis (simple and transect analysis), the author tries to evaluate human impact on vegetation cover. He attempts also to show that originally this environment consisted of two different types i.e. dry and humid, each of which corresponded to a certain floristic composition. There is a tendency for this difference in composition to decrease there where human interference is strongest,i.e. on land under cultivation. It is difficult to verify that there is any part of Insana that is not influenced directly or indirectly by human intervention. It is evident that the practice of slash and burn has had the strongest influence on the transformation of the vegetation cover.However, we have to consider also that the introduction of Bah cattle to this territory has had a great impact on the modification of the environment. Meanwhile there is a tendency to increase the number of species or varieties of economic plants, in particular food plants.

Abstract

VELDKAMP, J.F. 2004. Miscellaneous notes on mainly Southeast Asian Gramineae. Reinwardtia 12(2): 135 —140. — During the preparation of a revision of the herbaceous grasses of SE Asia a few nomenclatural and taxonomic novelties were detected. New combinations are proposed in Aristida L., Kengia Packer, Rytidosperma Steud., and Urochloa P. Beauv. Aristida novaeguineae Ohwi is re-instated as a distinct species. A key to the Malesian species of Aristida L. is provided. Moorochloa Veldk. replaces Brachiaria auct., s.s.

Abstract

ARDI, W. H. & ARDIYANI, M. 2015. Two new species of Alpinia (Zingiberaceae) from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 14(2): 311 - 316. - Two new species of Alpinia section Alpinia subsection Cenolophon, Alpinia macrocrista Ardiyani & Ardi, and Alpinia pusilla Ardi & Ardiyani, from Sulawesi, Indonesia, are described. Colour plates are provided, and four-locus DNA barcodes have been generated for the purpose of identification. Tabulated key to species of Alpinia subsection Cenolophon in Sulawesi is also presented.

Abstract

Amorphophallus discophorus Backer & Alderw. is one of the Javan endemic aroid species. This species is locally endemic to the slopes of Mount Wilis in Kediri Regency (East Java) at elevations between 600-1300 m. Poorly known species like A. discophorus could easily become extinct if not distinguished from other species, such as A. muelleri, that are used for commercial purposes. The conversion of natural forests for agriculture over the last decade has resulted in a loss of suitable habitat for this species. Several field trips undertaken to locate natural populations of this species have proved unsuccessful. Based on these field exercises, A. discophorus is regarded as presumed extinct in the wild.

Abstract

The genus consists of 8 species in Siam, Indochina, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, and the Lesser Sunda Islands. It is here divided into 2 subgenera, the monotypic Schoutevia with S. cvata Korth. and Chartacalyx with S. accrescens (Mast.) Curtis as type species. Chartacalyx is divided into 2 sections, Chartacalyx and A disci flora with S. kuiistleri King as type spscies.Three species, S. curtisii, corneri, and kostermansii are considered new. S. hypoleuca Pierre is reduced to synonymy of S. ovata Korth.S. peregrines Craib is reduced to a subspecies of S. glomerata King.The varieties of S. accrescens (Mast.) Curtis are deleted. The species is divided into 3 subspecies: accrescens, stellata, and borneensis. A forma lepidota is reeognized for subspecies accrescens.S. buurmanii K. et V. and S. kunstleri King- are considered to be different species.
