Abstract

This is the first taxonomic revision of this pantropical genus of prickly climbers for the area, the Solomons inclusive.It deals with 21 species, of which 19 ore native (dealt with over the whole of their area),and 2 are widely naturalized, viz C. pulckerrima and C. sappan.Also mentioned are 3 occasional introductions. Full descriptions are given,keys to the native and to the cultivated species, the complete synonymy and typification with all important later references.Many new deductions have been made,some from adjacent regions. New species are C. opptrsitifolia, from Borneo, with truly opposite leaves and C Bolomonewsis from the Solomons; new combinations are C.andamanica based on Mezoneuron andamanicum Prain,C furfuracea based on M. furfuraceum. Prain, C. hymenocarpa based on M, hymeno carpum Prain,C latisiliqua based on latisiliquum (Cavan) Merr,C. mindorensis based on M. mindorense Merr., C. pubeecens based on M. pubescens Desf., C. scorteckinii baaed on M. scortechinii F.v.M. from Queensland and now on record from New Guinea, the last one closely resembling C. brachycarpa, another new combination based on M. braehycarpmn Benth, from New South Wales.No subdivisions of the genus are adopted or proposed. The long standing nomenclatural confusion hetween C. bonduc, C. bonducella,C. cristrt, and C. major has been visualized in a diagram. Specimens of importance for the knowledge of the area have been cited. Extreme and intergrading specimens are discussed. Eeference is made to the main ecomonic literature Indexes to all names and all specimens are given.

Abstract

 1. The present paper is mainly based on studies on the spot of some members of the genus Anthoceros. Detailed descriptions and figures taken for the greatest part from living plants are given and notes on ecology and synonymy added.All species are treated as members of the genus Anthoceros, in which Aspiromitus Steph.and Phaeoceros Prosk. are included.2. Several of the species treated in this paper are very common in the cultivated area of West Java and their distribution is probably much wider than known at present and their number of synonyms larger.About forty badly described species of Stephani, based on material from tropical Asia, need a revision by a monographer. 3. Anthoceros tjibodensis W. Meijer appears in this paper as a new name for Anthoceros polyandrus Steph.

Abstract

Cyathea jacobsii (Cyatheaceae), Pneumatopteris auctipinna and Pseu-dophegopteris tenggerensis (Thelypteridaceae) are described as new species. Of these, only the last-named species is confined to Java, as at present known.

Four novelties in the genus Panicum L. namely P. phoiniclados,P. deccanense and P. paianum together with its variety minor have been described from materials collected from the Marathwada region of the Deecan plateau.

Abstract

This current study shows the presence of a new variety of Pandanus korthalsii Solms from Bengkulu, P. korthalsii Solms var. bengkuluensis A.P. Keim and records the presence of three species from Pandanus previously unknown to Sumatra and Borneo, particularly Kalimantan: Pandanus irregularis Ridl., P. labyrinthicus Kurz, and P. stelliger Ridl. The result of this study also indicates that in Sumatra the coastal-inhabitant P. labyrinthicus can also be found further inland from its previously known habitat.

Abstract

MAT-SALLEH, K., MAHYUNI, R., SUSATYA, A. & VELDKAMP, J. F. 2010. Rafflesia lawangensis (Rafflesiaceae), a new species from Bukit Lawang, Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 13(2): 159-165. - Rafflesia lawangensis (Rafflesiaceae), a new species from Bukit Lawang, Gunung Leuser National Park, North Sumatra is described. The species was previously recorded as either R. arnoldi or R. atjehensis, but it is distinguished by the absence of windows, the large undulating exterior annulus, the short pubescence on the upper surface of perigone lobes, and the very wide of diaphragm opening. A key to species of Sumatran Raffesia is provided.

Abstract

Gigantochloa pseudoarundinacea, G. robusta, G. atter, G. atroviola-cea and 14 other related Malesian species of bamboos were studied from preserved and living materials. Characters discerned by morphology, anatomy, chromatography and electrophoresis were analysed by numerical taxonomy. Most of the data indicated that the four species named above were distinct although closely related. The relationships of the remaining species were more complex, but the integrity of each species was established.

Reinwardtia 12 (2): 159 – 179. – There are ca. 23 species of Isachne in Malesia of which the seven belonging to sect. Isachne are treated here. Isachne miliacea Roth has been misapplied to I. minutula (Gaudich.) Kunth, as its type belongs to I. globosa (Thunb.) Kuntze. Isachne pulchella Roth is the correct name for I. dispar Trin.

Abstract

LATIFAH, D., CONGDON, R. A. & HOLTUM, J. A. 2016. Growth responses of palm seedlings to different light intensities stimulating canopy gaps with an ecophysiological approach. Reinwardtia 15(2): 81 – 98. — Palms (Arecaceae) mainly grow in rainforests and many occur in disturbed areas like canopy gaps created by natural disturbances such as cyclones in Australia. Knowledge of seedling growth in different light intensities is essential to assist rainforest restoration in disturbed or marginal lands. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of different light intensities on the seedling growth of Arenga australasica (H. Wendl. & Drude) S. T. Blake ex H. E. Moore, Calamus australis Mart., C. moti F. M. Bailey, Hydriastele wendlandiana (F. Muell.) H. Wendl. & Drude and Licuala ramsayi (F. Muell.) H. Wendl. & Drude. Seedling growth experiments (pot trials) were conducted in a glass house using shade cloth providing four different levels of shading: 59, 29, 17 and 6% sunlight. The growth rate, leaf turnover, leaf area, total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a:b ratio, vigor, above-ground and below-ground biomass and growth indices (LAR, SLA and LWR) of palm seedlings were measured. As a result of these measurements the relative shade tolerance of the five species was determined. The seedlings of Arenga australasica were classified as intermediate-shade intolerant species. Hydriastele wendlandiana seedlings were shade-intolerant. Calamus australis and C. moti seedlings are intermediate-shade intolerant. Licuala ramsayi seedlings were found to be a shade-tolerant.
