A REVISION OF MALESIAN CAESALPINIA, INCLUDING MEZONEURON*(LEGUMINOSAE-CAESALPLNIACEAE) T. A. HATTINK

Abstract

This is the first taxonomic revision of this pantropical genus of prickly climbers for the area, the Solomons inclusive.It deals with 21 species, of which 19 ore native (dealt with over the whole of their area),and 2 are widely naturalized, viz C. pulckerrima and C. sappan.Also mentioned are 3 occasional introductions. Full descriptions are given,keys to the native and to the cultivated species, the complete synonymy and typification with all important later references.Many new deductions have been made,some from adjacent regions. New species are C. opptrsitifolia, from Borneo, with truly opposite leaves and C Bolomonewsis from the Solomons; new combinations are C.andamanica based on Mezoneuron andamanicum Prain,C furfuracea based on M. furfuraceum. Prain, C. hymenocarpa based on M, hymeno carpum Prain,C latisiliqua based on latisiliquum (Cavan) Merr,C. mindorensis based on M. mindorense Merr., C. pubeecens based on M. pubescens Desf., C. scorteckinii baaed on M. scortechinii F.v.M. from Queensland and now on record from New Guinea, the last one closely resembling C. brachycarpa, another new combination based on M. braehycarpmn Benth, from New South Wales.No subdivisions of the genus are adopted or proposed. The long standing nomenclatural confusion hetween C. bonduc, C. bonducella,C. cristrt, and C. major has been visualized in a diagram. Specimens of importance for the knowledge of the area have been cited. Extreme and intergrading specimens are discussed. Eeference is made to the main ecomonic literature Indexes to all names and all specimens are given.

Abstract

1. This third part deals with "Clavariaceae," a family designation used in a traditional and descriptive, rather than a taxonomic, sanse. 2. Two of the author's previously published proposals for the conservation of certain names are replaced by slightly altered ones. They aim at the safeguarding of the names Clavulinopsis Overeem, Lachnocladium. Lev., and Ramaria (Pr.) Bonord. A proposal to conserve Pterula Fr. in its current sense is withdrawn as superfluous. 3. Some forgotten or neglected names are listed, e.g. Scleroglossum Pers. and Xyloglossum Pers. These two names are typified by a species that makes them synonyms of Acrospermum Tode ex Fr. (Ascomycetes). 4. The following typifications, among others, deserve attention: Dendrocladium Lloyd by Lachnocladium giganteum Pat., Holocoryne (Fr.) Bonord. by Clavaria falcata Pers. ex Fr., and Ramaria S. F. Gray by Clavaria pratensis Pers. 5. One new combination is made: Pistilliva typhae (Hohn.) Donk (basinym, Dacryopsis typhae Hohn.).

Reinwardtia 12(4): 261 – 265. ––The correct name for Tetrastigma lanceolarium auct.non Planch. or T. leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston ex Mabb. (Vitaceae) in Malesia is T. rafflesiae Miq. The name T.lawsonii is superfluous and has been misapplied to a species here described as new.

Abstract

The people in the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (then East Lesser Sunda Islands) consist of many  ethnic  groups,  each  with  their  own  local languages. The island of Flores is the second largest island within the East Lesser Sunda Islands. The island is inhabited by 10 ethnic groups, in which four are regarded as the dominant groups:  Flores, Ende, Lio and Manggarai. The pandan flora of the island is still largely unknown; the same is for their ethnobotany. The aim of this current study is to know the traditional usages and potential uses of pandan flora in the Flores Island. The study was carried out in three regencies:  Ende, Nagekeo and Manggarai. The result of this study shows that there are four species of Pandanus (P. amaryllifolius, P. dubius, P. kaernbachii, and P. tectorius) and one species of Freycinetia (F. insignis) are recorded from the areas understudy.  The presence of P. kaernbachii in Flores Island is a new record.  The people also recognises the diversity of Pandanaceae, especially from the genus Pandanus, in which they are known by local names such as “panda”, “re’a”, “waku”, and “mbojo”.  Main usages of Pandanus are as material sources for handicrafts (mats, coffee bowls, and hats), dye, flavourings, funeral offering, and ornamental plant.

Abstract

Lindenbergia is represented in Asia by 7 species. Based on the hairiness of their ovaries L. muraria (Roxb.) Briihl (= L. urticifolia Lehm.) and L. indica (L.) Vatke (= L. polyantha Benth.) are reinstated as distinct species. I follow Bentham in including Lindenbergia in the tribe Gratioleae. Objection to the use of the aestivation of corolla as the only positive character for distinguishing subfamilies of the Scrophulariaceae is put forward; it is shown that several genera (Lindenbergia, Isoplexis, Lagotis, Erinus, Freylinia,, Phygelius and Mimulus) considered to belong to one subfamily actually have the aestivation character of the other subfamily. The occurrence of resupinatton of the flower in Dopatrium juncewm (Roxb.) Buch.-Ham. ex Benth. is recorded for the first time.

Abstract

An illustrated description of Triposporium novoguineensei Rifai sp. nov. is presented based on a specimen collected at Garaina, New Guinea.A special visitor award from the Australian Government enabled me to attend the 42nd Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) Congress held in August 1970 in Port Moresby (Territory of Papua and New Guinea), and to participate in a botanical and agricultural post-congress tour around the Territory. The ample opportunity to collect fungi during this tour was fully utilized and a specimen which appeared to represent an undescribed species of Triposporium was found in Garaina Tea Estate, Garaina, Territory of Papua.

Abstract

The compound strobili of cordaites and conifers (e.g. Amentotaxiis) is interpreted by the application, of the telome theory. Homologies of organization among the strobilar structures and the pinnate phylloclade of Phyllocladus are also suggested.

Abstract

The genus Serianthes was erected by Bentham to accomodate plants which Wallich had called Inga grandiflora, from Singapore, and those which Bertero had called Acacia myriadenia, from Tahiti. It has been accepted from the first, as it is amply distinct from Acacia and reasonably so from Inga. though it is usually placed in the tribe Ingeae. Serianthes is widespread in the southwest Pacific, usually, though not always, occurring on islands, frequently on calcareous or serpentine rocks or their derived soils. It is seldom abundant, though in places common. In habit it varies from a dwarf tree or large shrub to a forest giant. It is reported to be an excellent timber tree, but seems nowhere to be abundant enough to be important commercially. Since Bentham's original description in 1844, eleven additional species and one variety have been ascribed to it in addition to the original S. grandiflora. Three of these do not belong in Serianthes. Most of the specimens in herbaria, excepting those called S. grandiflora, have been misidentified, usually being placed in S. myriadenia. Although I first saw this genus growing and collected it in Raivavae and Rurutu in 1934, my interest in it was aroused by failure, in 1950, to find a satisfactory disposition for specimens collected in Palau, similar to those that Kanehira had referred to S. grandiflora, which they clearly were not. The more I tried to make sense of the herbarium material available in a number of herbaria the more frustrating the problem became. Notes were accumulated in a most haphazard and unsystematic manner, as I had no intention of doing more than identifying my Micronesian material. Finally it became evident that over half of the entities discernible in the material examined were undescribed, and I felt a certain obligation to work up at least a synopsis of the genus.

Abstract

SADILI, A., KARTAWINATA, K., KARTONEGORO, A., SOEDJITO, H. & SUMADIJAYA, A. 2009. Structure and composition of subalpine summit habitats on Mt. Gede-Pangrango complex, Cibodas Biosphere Reserve, West Java, Indonesia. Reinwardtia  12 (5): 391–404.  We undertook a phytosociological analysis of the subalpine herbaceous and shrubby vegetation at the Mandalawangi and Suryakencana meadows and the scrub at the Crater Side at the tops of Mt. Gede and Mt. Pangrango in the Cibodas Biosphere Reserve. We recorded 30 species of 18 families of saplings, shrubs, seedlings and herbs in 78 quadrats with a total area of 7,800 m2. Anaphalis javanica, a woody tall herb and long-lived pioneer was the dominant species in the sapling and shrub stratum, while Isachne pangerangensis, Tripogon exiguus and Carex verticillata were prevalent in the seedling and herb stratum at Mandalawangi and Suryakencana. Stunted shrub is Vaccinium varingaeifolium, dominant in the Crater Side scrub. Based on the importance values, the Mandalawangi meadow may be designated as the Anaphalis javanica-Isachne pangerangensis community type, the Suryakencana meadow as Anaphalis javanica-Tripogon exiguus community type and the Crater Side scrub as Vaccinium varingiaefolium-Seliguea feei community type. The similarity indices between Mandalawangi and Suryakencana community types were very high (>75 %) while those between the Crater Side and Mandalawangi and the Crater Side and Suryakencana were very low (<10 %). Poor soil conditions and fire seem responsible for the perpetual existence of A. javanica.
