Abstract

BO followed sequences written in the first Flora Malesiana series II for Malesian fern specimen arrangement and flora listing, which then  updated as revision for pteridophyte families done successively.  However, the sequence in this incomplete flora to some extent is problematic. Recent advancement in pteridophyte classification is available and expected to stabilize delimitation of families and genera. The paper reviews the two sequences and presents a consensus for specimen arrangement and flora listing of Malesian fern.

Abstract

A key to and a check list of the 56 Xanthophyllum (Polygalaceae) species of Borneo is presented. One species is newly described, X. albicaulis. Xanthophyllum hildebrandii is sunk in X. ellipticum.

Abstract

The systematic significance of leaf epidermal micromorphology of ten Nepenthes species (Nepenthaceae) from Peninsular Malaysia. Reinwardtia 18(2): 81−96. — The pitcher plants of Malaysia belong to the genus Nepenthes and can be found thriving in swampy areas, along the roadside, on hillslopes and in mountainous terrains depending on species and their ecological preferences. In this study, cuticle micromorphology of ten species of Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) collected from Peninsular Malaysia was intensively studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterise and investigate diagnostic characters of cuticle micromorphology that can be useful in Nepenthes classification. A total of eleven characters from the inner and outer cuticles were enumerated in details and these characters have a value either for infrageneric classification or for diagnostic identification of the species. Characters observed and analysed were related to the epidermal cells, subsidiary cells, stomatal complex i.e type of waxes on both epidermal surfaces, abaxial and adaxial cuticular ornamentation, stomata characteristics, stomata formation, stomata frequency, cuticular ornamentation on stomata, shape of the stomata, stomata size, trichome existence and type of trichomes. Nepenthes ampullaria is clearly distinguished from the other species by markedly different types of tufted and multicellular trichomes of the epidermal cells on both leaf epidermal surfaces. For N. alba, its cuticular feature showed groovy cuticular pattern on the abaxial and adaxial surface, hence, can serve as a diagnostic cuticular pattern for this species. From these findings, the species delimitation based on cuticular features show a clear resolution, however some species might be individually distinct based on the combination of characters examined.

Abstract

Dipodium R. Br. (Orchidaceae), a genus of ca. 38 species, should be divided into an Australasian clade and a Malesian clade, based on morphological and geographic evidences. Dipodium section Dipodium and section Leopardanthus (Blume) O. Kuntze are re-defined to accommodate this change. An evolutionary scenario that explains this division is proposed. The lack of diversity of floral structure in the genus is probably caused by pollinator-specificity, while the diversity of plant form may be due to long-term environmental factors. An evolutionary explanation is suggested for the complex between Dipodium fevrellii J. J. Sm. and the hybrid D. pandanum Bailey in New Guinea. The complex in Java involving D. pictum (Lindl.) Rchb. f. and D. scandens (Bl.) J. J.Sm. is discussed, and the presence of a hybrid noted.In Borneo, the complex taxonomic situation caused by repeated inter-breeding of populations is noted.

Abstract

RAHAYU, S. & RODDA, M. 2017. Hoya narcissiflora (Apocynaceae, Asclepiadoideae), a new species from Borneo. Reinwardtia 16(1): 11 – 16. — A new species of Hoya from Borneo is described, namely Hoya narcissiflora S. Rahayu & Rodda. The species has thin, non-succulent leaves similar to those of species in the Hoya campanulata Group and shallowly campanulate corolla. It is compared with all other Bornean Hoya species possessing campanulate corollas.

Abstract

The history of the genus and the arguments for merging it with Aglaia,,areexpounded.The section Lansium of Aglaia is characterized by simple hairs and contains 15 species.Aglaia kinabaluensis, A. intricatoreticulata, A. membrartacea and A. chartacea are new to science.New combinations: Aglaia anamallayana, aquea, breviracemosa, dubia, koster- mansii, pedicellata, sepalina. New names: A. steenisii (base: L. pedicellatum Kosterm.), A. pseudolansium (base: L.cinereum Hiern).The genus Reinwardtiodendron Koorders is merged with Aglaia (sect Lansium);new name: A. reinwardtiana (base R. celebicum Kds.).Excluded are: Lansium decandrum Roxb. and L. hum.ile Hassk., which are referred to Aphanamixis (A. decandra and A. humile, comb, nov.).

One species is a new species described here for the first time and named Freycinetia sumbawaensis A.P. Keim & M. Rahayu.
