Abstract

Thirteen species of macrochelid mites belonging to the genera Holostaspella, Macrocheles, Neopodocinum and Glyptholaspis were collected from a nest of honey bee Apis dorsata dorsata at Bogor Botanical Garden, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Of these, one species was described as new to science, two species were recorded from Indonesia for the first time, and all species were recorded from nest of Apis dorsata dorsata for the first time. Macrocheles nidus sp. nov. is similar to some species of scutatus subgroup, but it is discernible from the latter by the pilosity of dorsal setae.

Abstract

The phylogeny of Glyphodes Cuenee (14 species) and four outgroup species (Feltia jaculifera, Metallarcha aureodiscalis, Talanga sexpunctalis and Agrioghrypta eurytusalis) was inferred fromnucleotide sequence variation across a 686-bp region in the CO I gene. Over the entire 686-bp region, 19.9% sites were informative (3.35% in the 1st-, 0.29% in the 2nd - and 16.32% in 3rd - codon position). The results also showed that the base composition of this region was high A+T biased (C= 0.258) and the averages ofestimated sequence divergence in the comparisons between species within and between groups were 7.1% and 9.0%, respectively. In general, the phylogeny based on CO I gene by including all substitutions or any partial data set used in this study was not only able to recover almost the three monophyletic groups withinGlyphodes as previously recovered by morphological phylogeny but also showed more clearly the relationships among them: Glyphodes group 2 was branched off first then followed by group 3 and 1.Key words: CO I, Glyphodes, morphology, phylogeny

Abstract

The ant fauna of the Krakataus, and Sebesi and Sebuku islands, based oncollections made by RU in 2005 by intensive sweep-netting are reported. Thirty-sevenspecies of ant were collected on the Krakataus (Rakata, Sertung, Panjang, and AnakKrakatau), 15 species on Sebesi, and 4 species on Sebuku. The ant species diversity onAnak Krakatau (20 species) was remarkably more diverse than those known from Rakata(15 species), Sertung (13 species), and Panjang (12 species). Abstract

From 1962 to 1967 Hoogerwerf described 16 new taxa of birds fromJava and its satellite islands. His description of each new taxon was based on 3 to 34 specimens. Despite the regulations of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), which clearly stipulated to designate the type specimens, Hoogerwerf had designated two and in one case three “type” specimens for each of the 14 out of his 16 new taxa, instead. In order to preserve stability of nomenclature, we reevaluate and designate the paratypes, lectotypes, paralectotypes of these Hoogerwerf’s new taxa. Abstract

The giant rat of Flares, Papagomys armandvillei (Jentink, 1892) lives in small remnants of relatively undisturbed forest on the island of Flores, Eastern Indonesia. It is a rare animal but in recent years specimens have been collected from Ruteng, Manggarai, (Ruteng is the capital of district Manggarai) West Flores. It appears to be most abundant (or most easily obtained) in the area around Ruteng in West Flares. Within museum collections it is represented by 13 specimens, the vast majority collectedprior to 1970. From the locality records of 13 specimens the species is, or was, distributed in Potjong, Sika, Mboera, Ruteng, Manggarai, Nunang and Wewo Pongkor, Flores, Indonesia. It is also presented as subfossils of recent age from Liang Toge, a cave near Warukia, 1 km south of Lepa, in Manggarai District (ill printed as Menggarai Province), Western Flores (Musser, 1981). Also present in this deposit are the fragmentary remains of a closely related species of giant rat which has been described asPapagomys theodorverhoeveni by Musser (1981). This material consisted of 18 mandibular fragments with either partial or intack tooth rows (Hooijer, 1957, Musser 1981). We record here a modem specimen among other 4 specimens of Papagomys armandvillei collected after 1970, unfortunately represented only by skull and mandibles that was discovered in the collections of the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) during a check following the transfer of the mammals (and other zoological collections) from the Bogor Botanical Garden to new modem building at Cibinong, 23 km north of Bogor City.Keywords: Taxonomy, giant rats, status, Flores

Abstract

Trachypharynx cibodasi sp.n. a new strongylid from a rat, Rattus tiomanicusfrom Cibodas-West Java, lndonesia is described. It differs from other species of Trachypharynx in having less number corona radiata internal elements (20), smaller body measurements and esophageal structure.

Abstract

The occurrence of butterfly species at Ujung Kulon National Park is presented based on collection and observation data obtained in 2005, 2006 and 2010 and previous reports. As many as 101 butterfly species were recorded during the recent surveys. The data are compared with previous findings. To date, there are 177 species reported from Ujung Kulon.

Abstract

Puntius bunau, neto species from the Seturan Watershed, Bulungan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia is distinguished from its congellers by the combination of the following characters: a black triangular bar all theside of the body under the dorsal fill, black spots behind the opercle, a black bar all the edge of the anal fill, 22-23 lateral line scales, predorsal profile convex, and eye diameter 21.28-29.73% of head length.
