Abstract

The purpose of this research was to incorporate the cation of [Ti8O12(H2O)24]8+ in the interlayer of HTiNbO5 by so-called “Chimie Douce” method. The cation of [Ti8O12(H2O)24]8+ has been tranformed to polymer-{Ti(IV) Oxo Hydroxide} and pillared in the interlayer HTiNbO5. The incorporation of polymer-[Ti(IV) Oxo Hydroxide] in the interlayer HTiNbO5 has been confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM). The exchange of the polymer of {Ti(IV) Oxo Hydroxide} was facilitated by opened layers of butylamine-intercalated complexes.

Abstract

Abstract

Systematic of Aganaine moths has been long in dispute since they show both noctuids and arctiids morphological characteristics. Even the relationship among genera within Indonesian Aganaines is still unclear, and their phylogenetic relationships need to be reexamined since the morphological hypothesis proposed previously was not able to show the relationship among them. In order to clarify the phylogenetic relationship among five genera of Indonesian Aganaines, I used sequence of mitochondrial CO I gene (610-bp) to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationship using MP and NJ tree building methods. The results showed that the phylogenetic relationship proposed in this study contradicts the previous hypothesis. The monophyly of subfamily Aganainae has a strong bootstrap support at any tree building methods (88-95%). Neochera was divided into two clades and branched off first and then was followed by Euplocia, Peridrome, Agape, and Asota. The similarity between the previous hypothesis and this study is only on the sister-group relationship between Euplocia and Peridrome and the division of Neochera into two clades. The synapomorphy of Euplocia + Peridrome is a large androconial patch on the forewing upperside at the costal base. This study also showed that all internal nodes gained least supports. It indicates that the relationships among internal nodes proposed here were poorly supported due to the limited number of species and only a short fragment of one mitochondrial gene included in the analysis. Further studies are needed to be done by including more other species, other nuclear genes, and genitalia characters in order to test the validity of the relationships proposed here.Key words: Aganaine, Asota, Agape, Euplocia, Peridrome, Neochera, phylogeny

Abstract

The phylogeny of Glyphodes Cuenee (14 species) and four outgroup species (Feltia jaculifera, Metallarcha aureodiscalis, Talanga sexpunctalis and Agrioghrypta eurytusalis) was inferred fromnucleotide sequence variation across a 686-bp region in the CO I gene. Over the entire 686-bp region, 19.9% sites were informative (3.35% in the 1st-, 0.29% in the 2nd - and 16.32% in 3rd - codon position). The results also showed that the base composition of this region was high A+T biased (C= 0.258) and the averages ofestimated sequence divergence in the comparisons between species within and between groups were 7.1% and 9.0%, respectively. In general, the phylogeny based on CO I gene by including all substitutions or any partial data set used in this study was not only able to recover almost the three monophyletic groups withinGlyphodes as previously recovered by morphological phylogeny but also showed more clearly the relationships among them: Glyphodes group 2 was branched off first then followed by group 3 and 1.Key words: CO I, Glyphodes, morphology, phylogeny

Abstract

Study on species status of a rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was conducted. The objectives of the study were to explorethe genetic variation among populations of S. incertulas in Java and to clarify itsspecies status based on CO I gene sequences. The results showed that from the entire680-bp region of sequences from10 population in Java, 99 % were constant. The averageof estimated sequence divergences in the comparisons among populations withinS.incertulas was very low about 0.01%. The base composition was slightly A+T biased(C:0.15) with G+C contents was 37.09%. The result of phylogenetic analysis showedthat S.incertulas is a single species with S.innotata as its sister group. The differenceson the body-size, black spot at female’s forewing, forewing length within S.incertulasare solely natural variation.

Abstract

Scirpophaga incertulas is one of economically important rice pests in South East Asia, including Indonesia. Systematic investigation on biological characteristics of ecological races based on recently changed of agricultural practiced and environment has been conducted  in order to asses knowledge on genetic variation of population of S. incertulas in Indonesia. A 685 bp segment of mitochondrialDNA COII was amplified from 42 different yellow stem borer samples from five locations in Java. The objectives of this study were to generate mitochondrial CO II  sequences for all available yellow stem borer  samples and to define haplotypes and nucleotide sequence diversity of the different yellow stem borer populations. Six different haplotypes (YSB1, YSB2, YSB3, YSB4, YSB5 and YSB6) were identified in yellow stem borer populations. The majority of the sampled individuals caried haplotype YSB2. Overall, the results of Tajima’s test statistic indicated that the population of Java was D= 0.85201, which suggests that there was no indicative of purifying selection or there was no presence of deleterious mutation segregating in the population. However, the results were not significant (P> 0:10) and additional studies are required to confirm this finding.Key words: Scirpophaga incertulas, yellow stem borer, MitochondrialDNA COII

Abstract

Notodontidae, a moderate family withinLepidoptera, consists of at least 3500species around the world. The speciesare mostly moderate to large in size withbiologically cryptic, but aestheticallypleasing wing patterns. The wings, especially the forewings, are usuallylonger and relatively narrow, as is theabdomen. The wing scaling is oftencoarse and the patterning never verycrisply defined.
