Abstract

Vegetation analysis of trees in Harapan Rainforest, PT.REKI, Jambi, was conducted on October-November 2009. Two 50m x 100m (0,5 ha) plots were established to obtain primary data for analysis. Plot one was made in the area of Medium Secondary Forest and plot two in the area of High Secondary Forest. Results shows that, the number of tree species were recorded from the two plots was 205 species from 550 individual trees with a total Basal Area (BA)= 64.75 m2. Plot one has 123 species from 284 individuals with BA = 10.82 m2 and Diversity Index (H)= -1.87. Bellucia axinanthera was recorded as the dominant species with Importance Value (IV)= 37.21%. Meanwhile, plot two has 126 species from 266 individuals with BA= 53.93 m2 and (H)= -1.97. Shorea acuminata was recorded as the dominant species with IV= 12.93%. Plot two (High Secunder Forest) has higher diversity of tree species than plot one (Medium Secunder Forest). The structure and composition of vegetation between plot one and plot two is different with similarity index for the two plots is only 21.46%.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study storage duration of potato, temperature and drying duration on the quality of Granola potato chips. This research was conducted at Postharvest Laboratory of Indonesian Vegetable Research Institute from May to November 2009. A Randomized Complete Block Design was used with two replications. First factor was storage duration of potato: 1 day, 4 and 7 days. Second factor was temperature: 40°C, 50°C and 60°C. Third factor was drying duration (16, 18, and 20 hours). The result showed that storage period of 1 day, drying temperature at 50°C for 20 hours gave the best quality of potato chip with better consumer preference. Good storage period of raw material, drying condition with appropiate temperature and time of drying could produce good quality of potato chip.

Abstract

The aim of this experiment is to evaluate the nutrient quality of leucaena leaf meal (LLM) with addition of sheep rumen fluid enzyme for nile tilapia feed and incubated in vitro either for 2 or 24 hours. This experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with 6 treatments and 3 replications. Those treatments were enzyme levels of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ml/ kg LLM. Results showed that nutrient quality of LLM with addition of sheep rumen fluid enzyme that incubated for 24 hours had the best result compared to that incubated for 2 hours. This finding significantly affected (PO.05) on the increase of sugar release (76.97%), soluble glucose (21.27%) and soluble protein (37.7%). It is concluded that sheep rumen fluid enzyme has a great potential for improving nutritional quality of leucaena leaf meal of fish feed.

Abstract

Mangrove and estuary ecosystem has highly biodiversity of benthic fauna. Crabs are the common benthic fauna found in this ecosystem. West Bali National Park is one area in Indonesia that has a good condition of mangrove and estuary ecosystem. The present study was done to provide data of the species composition of crabs in West Bali National Park. Sampling was undertaken on June 2009 in Teluk Gilimanuk, Teluk Terima and Teluk Banyuwedang. From a total 411 of crabs specimens, the highest species number was found in Teluk Terima.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to study the lucanids beetle diversity (Coleoptera: Lucanidae) in Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, North Sulawesi. Research was conducted between June 2008 and August 2008. Ecological samplings were conducted in three degrees of forest habitat (primary forest, secondary forest and margin forest). Beetles were surveyed by using light traps. Results indicates that number of species recorded are 82 individuals consist of 10 species. This results also indicates that habitat type has a strong effect on lucanid beetle community. Statistical analysis shows significant different of species richness, abundance and species diversity among habitat types.

Abstract

An investigation on the selection of soil fungi that degrade lignin and PAHs from some environment in Bali had been done. Some soil fungi are able to degrade lignin compound and PAHs. This fungus can be used to degrade industrial waste containing lignin and hydrocarbon compound. The aim is to obtain fungal capable of degrading lignin and hydrocarbon compounds. The soil samples were taken from mangrove areas, beaches and organic farms to the laboratory for fungal isolation. The isolation of the sample was obtained 20 number isolates. Penicillium sp KSt3 is the highest yield of mycelium. This fungus has ability on poly R-478 degrading as much as 2.3% within 60 minutes. This fungus has laccase activity of 3,32 units/ml and capable of degrading phenanthren (PAH) as much as 85.8% in 8 days.

Abstract

A spatial analysis was applied to predict the natural distribution of agarwood producing taxa of Aquilaria and Gyrinops in Indonesia. This research was conducted using herbarium materials which deposited in Hebarium Bogoriense, Research Center for Biology-LIPI and field data collected by researcher within periods of 1992-2009. Time serial maps of 1:250.000 were used in this analysis such as Indonesia digital base map of 1990, province land cover and deforestation digital maps of 1989 and 2005.Every sites of herbarium collection was identified using digital Cyclopedia of Malesian Collectors for the name of village/place and date of collection. The coordinate of those sites comprises latitude, longitude and altitude was retrieved by query method using Indonesia digital geo-reference data. Tabulated data of every collection/data was created and then overlaid to the time serial land cover and deforestation maps using GIS software, to identify the recent condition of that area. The results show that horizontal natural distribution of Aquilaria was mainly occur in the western part of Indonesia, while Gyrinops in eastern part of Indonesia. Vertical distribution analyses of the Aquilaria and Gyrinops showed that in general both genera are mainly grown naturally in the low land areas less than 300 m asl. Spatial analyses using time serial land cover and deforestation maps indicated that low land areas less than 300 m asl. having very high risk on the land use changes, whereas increasing land status classification from six on 1989 to fifteen on 2005. More than 20 % of forested areas have been change into non forest area such as plantation, agricultural land, resettlements and open unproductive lands since 1989. Natural distribution of agarwood producing taxa horizontally and vertically on all of major islands and the conservation strategy were discussed in this paper.

Abstract

Red rice is one corp that has genetic variation both based upon phenotype and genotype evaluation using moleculer markers for specific gene. A research objective is to identify genetic diversity using red rice specific molecular markers. Forty accessions of Indonesian local rice included 9 accessions of red rice germplasm were used as genetic materials for this research. Specific molecular markers (RC3, RC9 and RC12) for a pigment color found in rice seed were designed based on alignment sequence analysis to rc-bHLH gene, a transcription factor for prothocyanidine protein. Then these markers were used to analyze the genetic variation of red rice. Cluster analysis and association test between phenotype and genotype performances were analyzed by TASSEL 2.1 software program. Results showed that red rice accessions distributed into 2 cluster. One cluster is more closely related to white rice than the other. The association test showed RC12 is the most significant marker in association with the red rice trait: red pericarp and white aleuron. These phenotype variations were found in Cempo merah, one accession originated from Yogyakarta and Pulut mandoti, one accession from South of Sulawesi.
