Abstract

IKE RACHMATIKA & SOETIKNO WIRJOATMODJO.1988.Feeding ecology of Glyptothorax major Blgr) (Bagaridae, Silurifoimes) in the Ala River,South East Aceh. Berita Biologi. 3(8): 396 399.A study on the feeding ecology of Glyptothorax major (Blgr) was conducted in the Alas River South East Aceh, Sumatra during early dry season, January 1983.Index of Preponderance analysis showed that this species is a benthic-insect feeder It was found that the food habit of immature and mature fish is slightly different. The mature fish's food habit is more varied than the immature's. Based on the concept of the "availability factor"of prey species,a tendency was also found that the mature fish is a more opportunistic of using food resources than the immature's.The supposed mechanisme of this difference and its relation with condition factor values is discussed.

Abstract

N.WULIJARNI-SOETJIPTO.1988. Effect of drying and storage temperature on the viability of kemuning(Murraya panicuhta) seeds, Berita Biologi 3(8): 424 - 429.Seeds of kemuning {Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack) were dried under room temperature (28°±2°C),and then stored for a duration of 9 weeks at 28°, 10°, 4° and - 10°C. The seeds remained fully viable when the moisture content was reduced to 5%. After storage at 10° or 4°C the seeds having 5% moisture content remained almost fully viable.Their viability decreased to around 60% at - 10°C, and less than 40% at 28°C.Seeds having higher moisture contents still maintained their viability after being stored at 10°C. However, they lost their viability when stored at higher or lower temperatures. It appeared that the seeds contained much higher percentage of saturated fatty acids compared with the unsaturated fatty adds. It is concluded that the kemuning seeds do not tend to follow the behaviour of true orthodox seeds, since they do not seem to withstand subfreezing temperature although they may toleratev drying.

Abstract

S. DANIMIHARDJA,SAEFUDIN,F. SYARIF & N.SETYOWATMNDARTO. 1987. The growthof some fast-growing legume species in the field after seedling inoculation with Rhizobium.Berita Biologi 3(8): 377 - 381.Eleven species of fast growing legumes were grown in the field after their root seedlings were inoculated with two selected strains of Rhizobium sp.The results indicated that Acacia villosa was the fastest growing species (324.8 cm in height and 28.35 mm in diameter after 13 months of planting). The slowest one was Albizia procera (86.20 cm and 10.45 mm).The statistical analysis indicated that between species there were highly significant differences either in height or in diameter of the plants. Between treatments there was significant difference in diameter, but not in height. The interaction between treatments and species was highly significant difference in diameter, but not significant one in height. After 13 months of planting 6 species had already produced pods, namely Acacia villosa,Albizia lebbeck,Bauhinia acurninata, B. purpurea, Caesalpinia pulcherrima and 7 C.sappan.The death rates were ranging from 19% (in Albizia chinensis),30%(in A. falcatariaj, 46% (in A. procera),47% (in A. lebbeck), until 50% (in Acacia auriculiformis).

Abstract

YUN INDIARTO.1988,Relationship between percent coverage of Salvinia molesta f nd growth rate of Nile Tilapia (Tilapia nilotica),Berita Biologi 3(8) : 400 - 404.A study on the growth rate of Nile Tilapia in relation to various coverage of S.molesta has been conducted in experimental ponds for twelve weeks. Anaiysis of variance shows that the percent coverage of S.molesta affected significantly the growth rate of the Nile Tilapia (weight : F>F 0.01 and length : F > F0.05).It was found that 50% coverage or more may reduce the tish growth rate. The best growth rate was 1 reached at 25% coverage.Environmental condition:related to the above findings are discussed.

JANITA AZIZ & M. AMIR. 1988.Some ectoparasites collecting methods of racing pigeon (Columba livia Gmelin). Berita Biologi 3(8):382 - 385.Extraction of ectoparasites of living racing pigeons was done using modified "Fait Isle".The insectisides used for the extraction were pyrethrum, caumaphos and chloroform. The number of acarines extracted during the night was higher than that during the day.In addition insecticides spraying treatment extracted more acarines than fumigation. From the 3 kinds of insecticides used, chloroform proved to kill more acarines than the other two insecticides.

Abstract

Y. PURWANTO, R. D. RAHAYU & HADI SUTARNO.1987. Tolerance of salak seeds on moisture content, temperature and fungal attack.Berita Biologi 3(8): 390 -395.Salak (Salacca edulis var.amboinensis) seeds are difficult to withstand in long term storage. For keeping its viability in storage their tolerance on moisture content, temperatur and fungal attack were studied.Decreasing moistur content influenced salak seed viability. Salak seeds would not afford to sprout. If moisture content reached 24.9%.By moisture content of 47.5%,seed viability dropped to 50.00%.Treatment of storage at temperatures of 10°C, 15 C and 20 C decreased moisture content sjid fungal attack less than at 25°C' and control. Dipping Dithane M45 treatment decreased fungal attack obviously, but it also reduced seed viability.
