Abstract

Currently, there are few information regarding the infection of diseases to corals in Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia, eventhough scientists have suspected that coral diseases and coral bleaching event would occur in the area due to the pollution from Jakarta. In April 17 - 22 2006, a survey was done in Petondan Timur as a response of oil spill incident in the previous month. Results show that 3.9% of coral colony from 16 genera were infected with white syndromes (WS), with 2,1% bleached. This is a shocking result because no infection were found in February 2006.Acroporids and Pocilloporids were the most affected with WS. The infection also occurs more in the shallow area (3 m).It also seems that the infection correlates with coral bleaching. This phenomenon is suggested to happen due to the combination of oil spill incident and seasonal transition.

Abstract

Abstract

A study on the distribution and abundance of high mountain rat was carried out at Gunung Botol, Gunung Halimun National Park.Observation was conducted at three stations located at the mountain top, middle and foot of the mountain. The results indicated that four species of rat were recorded from Gunung Botol, namely Maxomys bartelsii,Niviventer lepturus, Niviventer fulvescens and Niviventer cremoriventer. Our data showed a relationship between number of individuals observed of each species with altitudinal gradients. While estimation of murid rodent population between altitudinal changes indicated there was no differences between the stations observed. An analysis was conducted to investigate any possible association between rat abundance against environment factors that could associate with altitude. The results indicated that ground covering and tree circumference, as well as interspecific competition seemed to be important factors in influencing the differences in distribution of each rat species.

Abstract

Andamia heteroptera, known as rockskipper fish, is one of amphibious fish. Most of amphibious fish use caudal fin to facilitate locomotion in land and water. The modification is fusion of os hypural and reduction-fusion os epural and uroneurals. The aim of this study was to  acces skeleton and musculature structure of A. heteroptera caudal fin. Alizarin red-Alcian blue staining revealed that caudal fin of A. heteroptera has wider spina hemalis and spina neuralis support the locomotion. There is modification of caudal fin structure for support the locomotion. Caudal fin musculature of A. heteroptera is identified as primitive type, since its lack of musculus hypochordal longitudinalis.

Abstract

Toona sinensisis a plant species included in Meliaceae family. In China, the leaves of T. sinensis are used in Chinese traditional and herbal drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, urethritis, gastric ulcer, enteritis, diarrhea, chronic dysentery, itching, andcancer. Barkis the part of plant that contains phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds have redox properties that can act as a reducing agent or hydrogen donor so its have antioxidant properties. In this study, four types of solvent were used for partition of T. sinensis bark extract. The fractions were used to examine the effects of solvents on total phenolic content sand antioxidant activity. Total phenolic content of fractions was determined using Folin-ciocalteu reagent while antioxidant activity was carried out using phosphomolybdenum, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, ferric reducing power and ß-carotene bleaching assay. Results showed that ethyl acetate fraction has the highest content of total phenolic compound (36,42 ± 0,05 mg GAE/g) and the stronggest of antioxidant activity on total antioxidant (34,44 ± 0,03mg AAE/g), DPPH radical scavenging (IC50= 35,23 µg/mL), ferric reducing power (IC50=128,55 µg/mL) and ß-carotene bleaching assay (IC50 fraksi (125,62 µg/mL). Instead of n-hexane fraction has the lowest content of total phenolic compound and the weakest of antioxidant activity of all antioxidant activity assay. It can be concluded that the difference in the polarity of the solvent partitioning lead to differences in total phenolic content and antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Hybridization is one alternative of genetic improvement to increase the production of commercialize commodity. The aim of this study was to determine the character of reproductive performance and the value of heterosis from cross-breeding of giant gouramy (Osphronemus gouramy) strain Bastar and Bluesafir. Crosses were performed in both directions (reciprocal) with naturally spawning system. Two pairs of giant gouramy of each strain were used, each pair contained 4 ? and 1 ?. Every pairs were reared in 3 x 3 m of pond.Reproductive characterization, such as Fecundity, Ovo Somatic Index, egg diameter, egg weight, Fertilization Rate (FR), Hatching Rate (HR), the latency time of hatching, and yolk sack absorbtion period, were observed. Other parameters including larval lenght and Survival Rate (SR) were also observed. Heterosis (H) value was calculated from FR, HR and SR. Result showed that each population and its cross-breed had no different in reproductive characters. Latency time of hatching, egg diameter, egg weight and yolk sac absorbtion period values were 3 ± 0 days; 0.74 ± 0.05 cm; 11 ± 4 mg dan 9 ± 1 days, respectively. Meanwhile fecundity value showed that Blusafir strain had higher fecundity (3661 ± 624), and Ovo Somatic Index percentage (21.96 ± 3.74). The highest HR was presented by ? Bluesafir x ? Bastar (97.95 ± 0.47 %), meanwhile ? Bastar x ? Bluesafir presented the highest FR and SR (99.15 ± 0.34 % and 92.57 ± 0.40 %). Heterosis value showed that cross-breeding between ? Bastar x ? Bluesafir had better HR and SR (1.20 and 2.37), white hand cross-breeding between ? Bluesafir x ? Bastar presented better FR (0.69).

Abstract

Zingiber zerumbet (L.) J.E. Smith, usually called as lempuyang gajah is belonging into Zingiberaceae. This plant has been used as traditional medicine for curing coach, asma, headache, diarrhoe and disentry. Objective of study was to determine the effect of pretreatment and growth media on the productivity of Z. Zerumbet. Research was conducted in Treub Experimental Garden,Research Centre for Biology-The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), Bogor. The experiment using a Factorial Completely Randomized Design with two main factors in five replications. The first factor was pretreatment of rhizome (no treatment and pretreatment on growth chamber); the second factor was growth media i.e. soil, soil+sand+cow manure (1:1:2) and soil+sand+cow manure+compost (1:1:2:2.). The result showed that pretreatment of rhizome had significant effect on number of shoots, no pretreatment of rhizome sicnificantly had higher value. Growth media had significant effects on growth and yield which had the highest value on all parameters observed. There was an interaction effect of rhizome pretreatmnent and growth media. The best result was on the combination treatment of no pretreatment rhizome and mixed media of soil+sand+cow manure+compost(1:1:2:2.) which had the highest dry weight of rhizome.
