Abstract

Study on the taxonomy and conservation status of Balsaminaceaein Java has been carried out. Based on the literature study, herbarium specimen deposited at Herbarium Bogoriense-LIPI (BO) and several field works in Java, there were two genera of Balsaminaceae found in Java namely, the monotypic Hydrocera triflora and the prolific Impatiens. The Impatiens consisted of seven species, i.e. Impatiens arriensii, I. chonoceras, I. radicans, I. javensis, I. wallerana, I. Platypetala and I. balsamina. Three species among them, Impatiens arriensii, I. radicans and I. Chonoceras were endemic and threatened in their habitat, while I. microceras has been extinct in the wild. The species Impatiens arriensiiwas transferred from the genus Semeiocardium.

Abstract

Ellianol 70% and water exlracls of Alpinia spp. i.e. Alpinia zemmbei. A. kaisumadai. A. malaccensis and A. officinarum were examined for their impact in in-vitro phagocytosis activity and capacity of mouse (Mus musculus) peritoneum macrophage induced by Staphylococcus epidermidis. The extract concentrations used in this experiment were 0: O.I: 1.0: 10: 100: and 1000 µg/ml,Imboost (Echinacea pwpurea extract) 1000 µg/ml was used as positive control while distilled water as negative control. The assay results showed that all of the extracts were active to promote phagocytosis activity and capacity of macrophage cells. The phagocytosis acitivity and capacity were increased by increasing extract concentration, and ethanol extract showed better activity than water extract. Alpinia officinarum and A. kaisumadai extracts reveal better phagocytosis activity and capacity than others. Activity and capacity of phagocytosis of each concentration was significantly (P<0.05) different each other as well as with negative control. There is significant difference among each extracts and positive control at 1000  µg/ml

Abstract

Preliminary study on bacterial survive in soil containing pesticide has been carried out. Soil samples collected from Lembang and Dieng. The soil deprive from agriculture area that intensively using pesticide, and compared to other samples gathered from forest soil. All samples examined for total bacteria, denitrification bacteria, phosphate solubilizing bacteria, soil induce respiration, urease and phosphatase activities. Pattern of whole parameters in each soil sample configured similarly, but the value performed differently in the same parameters. Total bacterial population in soil samples also inspected after the samples amended with some certain pesticides. Survival bacteria subjected to media amended with insecticide (Propoxur, Diazinon, and Chlorpyrifos), and herbicides (Bromacil and 2,4-D), and correlation of bacterial growth between sample location were varied. Bacterial degrading pesticide particularly isolated from the soil samples containing 1000 ppm Curzate (fungiside) and 500 ppm 2,4-D.The isolates then cultured in the medium containing insecticide and herbicide, and the response on growth observed in 7 days incubation. Bacterial perform were meaningful to reference of soil degrading pesticide residue in agriculture soil; and it would make representative reference in an effort to use bacteria throughout biofertilizer improvement.

Abstract

This research aims to see the land use change within ethnobotanical perspective. According to observation, interview, and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) it was known that land in Enggano Island have been changed, even the sacred forest transformed, into kebun/garden and ladang/field. The changes of land use was related with demography, economic, and socio-cultural changes in society. Social change affected the species that were planted by the community. The species with a high economic value and a quick harvest and did not need extra treatment planted by local people to replace the previous plants. The other impact that arises is the exixtence of local initiative to restore areas that should functioned as a forest.

Abstract

Gunung Halimun National Park is known to be the area of headwaters of a number of rivers/streams originate. However, there is no information about the fishes living in these rivers systems. In this regard, a series of ichthyofauna study was conducted from 1996 to 2002 in Cikaniki, Cimaja/Cisarua, Cisukawayana, Ciberang, Cidurian and Cibareno that covered 94 sampling stations. Method that was used was Catch Per Unit of effort (CPU) where electric fishing gear (and) cast net, trap were used.Forty fish species belonging to 16 families and 26 genera have been found. Gobiidae, the diadromous fishes, was dominant, comprising 14 species or 35 %, followed by Cyprinidae comprising 5 species or 12.5 %.These Gobioid fishes were derived from Cisukawayana, Cimaja, and Cibareno River, where these rivers flow south to the Indian Ocean. It was found that Paray, Rasbora aprotaenia; Beunteur, Puntius binotatus; Bogo, Channa gachua; Lele, Clarias batrachus; Kehkel, Glyptothorax platypogon; Soro, Tor tambra; Bungkreng/ Ikan Seribu Poecilia reticulata and Paris, Xiphoporus helleri were found in common in rivers flowing north and south, and Lentipes as well as Schismatogobius marmoratus extend their range to Java (new record for Java). The utilization of fishes for food by local people is presented including Gobioid fishes, which are at the juvenile stage (called as impun) are utilized as a part of their food source.

Abstract

Spinach is one of leafy vegetables species that contain lots of vitamins and minerals. This study aims to examine the quality of several genotypes of spinach grown at two highland sites of West Java (Cipanas and Lembang). This experiment was conducted using Split Plot design, with five lines and five replications. Three genotype were tested, namely B1 = By16 , B2 = By18 , and B3 = By21, as well as two commercial varieties on the market spinach (B4 = red Giti , B5 = Kusuma).Measurements included physical parameters (length and width of leaves, stem diameter, texture, and color) and chemical parameters (water content, vitamin C, and fiber). The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Physiology Vegetable Research Institute, Lembang from March to September 2012.The results showed that the content of vitamin C and fiber in genotype B1 and B2 were not significantly different from the control genotype.Similarly, the results of measurements of the length and width parameters of the leaves on all the tested genotype was not significantly different from the control genotype. Average length and width leaves of the genotype tested in Cipanas significantly higher than those tested in Lembang. Spinach has a shelf life of 1 day at room temperature in the storage area of Lembang ( 21±2°C and 85% RH ).

Abstract

The objective of the trials is to study host-pathogen relationships under green house test and field experiment. The virulence of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (XOO) isolates of races III, and VIII is characterized on rice genotypes with different resistance to bacterial blight (BB) disease. The result shows that the multiplication of the bacterial population on the resistant (IR 36) and susceptible (TN-1) rice genotype is almost similar at initial Aage of infection; however, BB symptom expression as indicated by lesion length and area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) are much faster on TN-1 than that on IR 36 genotype. Based on rice field trial in Pusakanagara Expt. St; W. Java; almost all rice genotypes tested shows susceptible (S) to highly susceptible (HS) against XOO race VIII at generative stage observation.

Abstract

Y. PURWANTO, R. D. RAHAYU & HADI SUTARNO.1987. Tolerance of salak seeds on moisture content, temperature and fungal attack.Berita Biologi 3(8): 390 -395.Salak (Salacca edulis var.amboinensis) seeds are difficult to withstand in long term storage. For keeping its viability in storage their tolerance on moisture content, temperatur and fungal attack were studied.Decreasing moistur content influenced salak seed viability. Salak seeds would not afford to sprout. If moisture content reached 24.9%.By moisture content of 47.5%,seed viability dropped to 50.00%.Treatment of storage at temperatures of 10°C, 15 C and 20 C decreased moisture content sjid fungal attack less than at 25°C' and control. Dipping Dithane M45 treatment decreased fungal attack obviously, but it also reduced seed viability.
