Abstract

Previous studies shown that Indonesian Thin-Tailed (ITT) sheep are more resistant to infection than Merino sheep infected with Fasciola gigantica. Eosinophils isolated from ITT sheep between 2-6 weeks postinfection could effectively kill immature parasites in vitro by superoxide radicals produced by these cells. The present study was undertaken to identify immunological mechanisms associated with such resistance by comparison of immue responses to fluke antigen in ITT and Merino sheep, a breed susceptible to infection with F. gigantica. This knowledge will enable the development of targeted control strategies using immunomanipulation such as by vaccination. Two critical observations from this in vivo studies were made including (1) eosinophils were significantly elevated at the time of F. gigantica parasite killing in the ITT host relative to the F. giganfica-susceptible Merino host, (2) IgG, responses correlated with resistance to infection in the ITT host.

Abstract

Three hundred years ago, a Sweden expert, Carl von Linne had laid down a very basic and strong foundation in naming all the living organisms on earth.Supposedly, without the brilliant effort of Carl von Linn6, nowadays, there may have any chaos among people around the world in naming all the living creatures, because everyone would have given the name to those organisms, due to their own sense; thus a kind species may have thousands of name. If this is happen, then all the information regarding the species (including its benefit to mankind) may have no meaning at all. All people would have spoken about a species differently, without realize that they actually regarding about the same species. The center of references such as Herbarium Bogoriense and Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense may be not existed without the work and service of Carolus Linnaeus. No one nowadays arguing the great service of Carolus Linnaeus in naming of each living organisms based on binomial nomenclature.

Abstract

Abstract

Currently, there are few information regarding the infection of diseases to corals in Seribu Islands, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia, eventhough scientists have suspected that coral diseases and coral bleaching event would occur in the area due to the pollution from Jakarta. In April 17 - 22 2006, a survey was done in Petondan Timur as a response of oil spill incident in the previous month. Results show that 3.9% of coral colony from 16 genera were infected with white syndromes (WS), with 2,1% bleached. This is a shocking result because no infection were found in February 2006.Acroporids and Pocilloporids were the most affected with WS. The infection also occurs more in the shallow area (3 m).It also seems that the infection correlates with coral bleaching. This phenomenon is suggested to happen due to the combination of oil spill incident and seasonal transition.

Abstract

The ammonia volatilization from lime soil is a very important factor of N-urea losses. Ammonia volatilization from lime soil is very high due to high buffering capacity and basalt pH of the soil. However, urea is commonly used by farmeru as N-source fertilizer on paddy field. One alternitive is Azolla as cover crop can be used to reduce ammonia volatilization from urea. Azolla as cover crop significantly reduced the pH of flodded water, increased tillers and yield up to 66%. Highest tillers production and yield occurred in the treatment of 250 kgs/ha urea, with yield 5.73 tons/ha of paddy seeds.

Abstract
