Abstract

D.I. HARTOTO & RISTIYANTI M. MARWOTO.1986. Community structure and spatial distribution of Melanoides plicaria at Cibinua, Ujung Kulon. Berita Biologi 3(4): 155 - 158. The study was conducted during the dry and rainy seasons of the year 1983 and 1984, on upstream and downstream segment of Cibinua, Ujung Kulon National Park in order to reveal the pattern of distribution and corelation with its habitat structures. The gastropod community was dominated by M. plicaria and most the other species are found in only small number, which is in accordance with the published data of their genera distribution.Distribution of M.plicaria indicated a similar patchy pattern in all season and segment, but suspected due to different mechanisms. There is a clear individual packing phenomenon but do not distinctively shows an aggregation condition.Different corelation pattern between number of individuals per plot and weighted scores olphysical structure is found in all season and segment. Exclusive competition between the predo minant gastropod and the carnivorous and herbivorous fishes is briefly discussed.

Abstract

Abstract

The simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in a single reactor using an activated sludge with cross-flow filtration was investigated. The reactor was a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), operated on three phase conditions, phase I was continuous aeration, phase II was intermittent aeration and phase III was intermittent aeration with methanol addition. The microbial properties on the nitrogen removal processes were monitored by measuring the ammonia decreasing and nitrate production rate. The denitrification rate was also calculated from N20 gas production by acetylene inhibition method. The experiment results show that the nitrification was occurred during the aeration condition, both in the phase I and II. The denitrification was occurred in the anoxic stage (phase III).The nitrate decreasing rate in the anoxic stage (phase IIIA) increased gradually reach the value of 0.19 th mg-N/1/min. on the 8 day operation. The nitrate decreasing rate increased to be 0.45 mg/l/min in the phase IIIB and reach up to 0.70 mg/l/min in the phase IIIC in which the methanol concentrations was increased from 762 mg/L to 1016 mg/L in the phase IIIB and phase IIIC, respectively. The increasing activity of denitrification resulted in decreasing the concentration of TOC in the reactor. More than 80% nitrogen removal occurred in phase III and TOC removal efficiency in phase III reach more than 90%.

Abstract

Hexanchus spp. are shark species that are often caught in the Indian Ocean southern Nusa Tenggara and its status is Near Threatened, but the information is still relatively limited. This study aimed to sex ratio, length-weight relationship and reproductive size of sixgill shark, Hexanchus spp. caught from southern Nusa Tenggara waters. This study had been carried out during 2016 at the Fishing Port of Tanjung Luar, East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Shark data collection was done by measuring the length, weight, maturity and fishing data. Data were analyzed  by formula of sex ratio, length-weight relationship, length at first maturity (Lm) and length at first catch (Lc). The results showed that Hexanchus spp. caught in the southern Nusa Tenggara waters consisted of H. nakamurai (81.82%) and H. griseus (18.18%). The sex ratio of both sharks was dominated by the female. The average of the total length of H. griseus (218.3 ± 96.08 cm). It was longer than H. nakamurai (127.6 ± 30.35 cm). The length-weight relationship of H. griseus was formulated as W = 0.0195 LT 2,6344 (R² = 0,9265) and H. nakamurai with the formula W = 0.002 LT 3,1098 (R² = 0.902). Both species  have the size of Lm was bigger than the size of Lc which indicated  to their population vulnerability.

Abstract

This research aimed to obtain information on the variability of crossbred resulted from three stocks of red claw (Cherax quadricarinatus von Martens). This research was performed at Research and Develepment Institute for Freshwater Aquaculture.Nine population consists of tree true breed and six reciprocal breed were resulted from the crossbreeding between the three stocks from Jakarta, Bali and Sukabumi. Results showed that the crossbred between Bali female parent and Jakarta male parent had the highest number of larvae / kg weight of female parent compared to the other crossbred. Between the female parent category, the Bali female parent showed the highest number of the larvae yielded, and between the male parent category, the Sukabumi male parent did. There was no significant different between the crossbred on the respon of growth performance. The highest heterosis on the number of larvae was achieved by the crossbred between Bali and Jakarta (25.8%) while the crossbred between Bali and Sukabumi performed the negative heterosis (-17.6%).Based on the calculation of the number larvae per kilogram weight of the parent, the highest heterosis was achieved by the crossbred Bali-Sukabumi (98.4%).The heterosis on the final weight and length showed the poor result, while on the respon of the specific growth rate showed negative result. It can be concluded that this undertaken hybridization did not provided the significant positive heterosis effect except for the number of larva per unit weight of parent.

Abstract

Kedawung is a member of the plant genus of Parkia (Mimosaceae). It has important value as traditional medicine and currently has been included in the Indonesian list of endangered medicinal plant species. There are two closely related species to Kedawung in Java: P. intermedia and P. speciosa. Parkia intermedia has long been assumed to be a hybrid between P. speciosa and P. timoriana. The species has leaflets linear-oblong and obtuse apex in mature foliage resemble P. speciosa, but has more numerous leaflets, linear-falcate, and acute apex in its juvenile leaflets similar to P. timoriana. Thus Hopkins (1992) included Petir as uncertain species. The aim of this study was to assess its current existing populations, to clarify the taxonomic status and to evaluate the similarity between kedawung and its related species. Exploration, morphology and leaf anatomical studies, as well as phenetic analysis have been conducted. The results indicated that morphology and leaf anatomical characters can be used to distinguish P. timoriana, P. intermedia and P. speciosa as different species, and P. intermedia was more closely related to P. speciosa than to P. timoriana.

Abstract

Abstract

This project focused on the immobilization of glucose isomerase (GI) from Arthrobacter B-3728. The whole cells immobilization technique using glutaraldehyde and gelatine type B220 was used in this research. The optimum time for harvesting Arthrobacter cells was determined before immobilization. The Arthrobacter cells were harvested after 56-72 h fermentation when the GI activity reaching 0.515-0.603 U/ml broth. The best treatment for cell immobilization was found using 5% gelatine when the GI activity reaching 0,888 U/ g immobilized cells. The optimum pH was not changed (pH 8) but the sensitivity to the pH was changed for immobilized cells compared to the free cells. However, the stability of the immobilized cells was lower compared to the free cells for long isomerization process. Further research are still needed for the development of immobilization technique for Arthrobacter B-3728.
