Abstract

Abstract

Trypanosoma evansi, one of about 200 trypanosomes species encountered in mammals in the world, is the causative agent of an economically important disease among domestic animals called surra. Many studies on T. evansi has been made using various experimental animals such as chicks and fowls for kifectivity (Alwar 1962, Manuel & Cajita 1967), mice for influences of temperature (Marthur 1976) and rats for immunological studies (Assoku 1975). Even larger animals such as goats, pigs, horses, cattle and buffaloes have been used by several workers in studying T. evansi infections (Chand & Singh 1971, Gill 1971, Srivastava & Ahluwalia 1972).The present paper deals with the susceptibilities of small laboratory animals to T. evansi infections in order to determine which animals are suitable for maintaining T. Svansi in the laboratory. All works in this study were done at the Filariasis Research Division of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), Kuala Lumpur.

S. SUNANISARI. 1988.Otjervation on the distribution of radioactive elements tadioiodine (I )and radiophosphorous ( 32 P) in maize and soybean.Berita Biologi,3(8): 371 - 373.The plants are able to absorb nutrients from their environment either was carried out to natural in the form of particles or synthetic radioactives. This experiment check the absorbtion and distribution of the radio actives 1311 and 32p on maize and soybean.The1 absorbtion of these radioactives were influenced by some physical factors of the substrat. At sludge substratum, plants absorbed 32p more than 131l.The distribution of 32p and 1311 were checked by their accumulation on.the plant organs. In maize, the accumulation of 32p and 131I were started from root, followed by stem, and leaves, while in soybean, they were started from root, followed by stem, leaves and cotyledon.

Abstract

Abstract

Shoot cultures of Kaempferia rotunda L.were established from rhizome segment. In the 1st experimen these explants were planted on Gamborg/B5 medium that supplemented with BA concentrations were (0, 0.5, 1 and 2) mg/l and/or kinetine were (0, 2 and 4) mg/l.In 2nd experiment these explants planted in Murashige and Skoog medium (MS).This medium supplemented with BA concentrations (0, 2 and 4) mg/l and/or NAA (0 and 1) mg/l.The result in the 1st experiment showed that the best proliferated shoots was from the culture that supplemented with BA 1 mg/l and kinetine 4 mg/l, while in the 2nd experiment the best proliferated shoots was from the culture that supplemented with BA 4 mg/l and NAA 1 mg/l.These shoots were then subcultured on MS liquid medium supplemented with BA (5 mg/l) and MS agar medium was supplemented with BA (2 mg/l) + 2iP (0.5 mg/l) + thidiazuron (0.01 mg/l) + NAA (0.5 mg/l).The cultures could induce the shoots number and produce the morphological plantlets for acclimatization, and acclimatization successed on soil and compost mixed medium in ratio 1:1.

Abstract

SRI HARTINI. 1985. The infestation pattern of arthropod parasites on rat at Purwodadi Botanical Garden. East Java. Berita Biologi 3(3) : 108-110. An investigation to find out the pattern of infestation of arthropod parasites on Rattus tiomanicus and Rattus rattus diardi was conducted in Purwodadi Botanical Garden, East Java. The parasites studied were Laelaps nutalli, Echinolaelaps echidninus (Acarina), Hoplopleura pacifica, Polyplax spinulosa (Anoplura) and Xenopsylla cheopis (Siphonaptera). It was concluded that parasite prevalence depends on habitat, age and sex of the host. The number of parasite infesting R. tiomanicus is greater than that of R.r. diardi, Adult rats have a higher prevalence rate than juveniles; likewise female adult rats are also higher than other sex and age group.

Abstract

The in vitro study of antibacterial effectiveness of Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) sheath ethanol extract and water extract on Streptococcus pneumoniae was conducted by diffusion and dilution method. Basic solution amounting to 70g/100 ml of the extract was diluted into 10%, 30%, 50% and 70% for diffusion test with positive control ampicillin 10 IU, and 0,1%, 0,25%, 0,5%, 1%, and 2% ethanol extract for dilution test on S. pneumoniae. The results showed that the ethanol extract and water extract could delay of bacterium growth. Agar diffusion test (disk diffusion) was observed by diameter of bar region around the disk. At concentration 70 % among extract ethanol and water extract made bar zone wide the best, the diameter mean was estimated 25.6 mm for ethanol extract, and 24.3 mm for water extract on S. pneumoniae. In dilution test, the result showed Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the extract was 1% on S. pneumoniae. The result of phytochemicals test is known that ethanol extract and water extract of rosella contains of saponin, tanin, and flavonoid.

Abstract

Caryota no Becc,(fish-tailpalm) is considered vulnerable palm, Its population is declining from the habitat by destructive exploitation but also to some extent by local people who remove the edible apex or 'cabbage 'as a vegetable and also obtain sago from the pith of the trunk,so kill the tree.A though its biological characteristics have not been fully studied, this species is also potentially for ornamental plant Thus conservation measures should be taken to improve the status of this threatened species. Tissue culture techniques may provide ways either to propagate or to conserve itin-vitro. Naturally Caryota no Becc.palm fruit after 20years and they can germinate more than 3 months after sowing with low germination value. In this experiment, the tissue culture response of this species are studied using the explant of embryo from (relatively) young fruit (juvenility fruit). The effect ofBA and 2,4D on the shoot growth, root growth and calluses was evaluated, while the evaluation of the effect ofactifated charcoal was discussed. The satisfactory results have not been achieved.
