Abstract

The study was conducted in tourism area of Guci, Tegal regency, Central Java for 5 days in October 2009. It was revealed that 16 species of frogs and one species of caecilian found in the area. We also obtained an interesting spesies of bleeding frog Leptophryne cruentata, an endemic frog from West Java and Hylarana rufipes that previously only was informed from West Sumatra. Species composition, distribution and abundance is presented.

Suwito, A. 2008. The Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) of Boganinani WartaboneNational Park, North Sulawesi: Diversity, Status and Habitat. Zoo Indonesia17(1):27-34. Mosquitoes need suitable habitats for the development of larvae. Larvaehabitats were identified and characterized at three locations: Mauk-Molotong River &Mainakum in Boganinani Wartabone National Park, and Mount Pakinya near PusianVillage out side from national park. Larvae were collected from bamboo stump, treeholes or puddle on the stones, while adults were collected using insect net and lighttrap especially in Mount Pakinya. Totally twenty two species of mosquitoes from sevengenera were identified morphologically. Species of Anopheles spp. and Culex spp.were the most dominant in Mount Pakinya. The conversion of forest becomes padifield and villages would rise new habitats of breeding sites, that finally would changethe distribution and composition of mosquitoes.

Abstract

 Monyet ekor panjang merupakan jenis primata yang memiliki kemampuan adaptasi yang tinggi untuk bertahan hidup pada berbagai tipe habitat yang berbeda. Kemampuan ini berkaitan dengan bagaimana jenis ini memanfaatkan sumberdaya yang terbatas di habitatnya selama waktu aktif untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya di alam. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan pola aktivitas dan penggunaan strata vertikal oleh kelompok monyet ekor panjang yang sudah terhabituasi dengan baik di fasilitas penangkaran semi alami Pulau Tinjil, Propinsi Banten, Indonesia. Kelompok monyet ekor panjang diamati menggunakan metode Scan Sampling dengan interval lima menit antara bulan Maret dan September 2011. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, kelompok monyet ekor panjang menggunakan waktu aktifnya paling banyak untuk berpindah (36,01%) dan beraktivitas paling banyak pada ketinggian 1-5 meter diatas tanah (31,98%).

Kurniati, H. 2007. The herpetofauna of the gold mining project area in NorthSumatra: Species richness before exploitation activities. Zoo Indonesia 16 (1): 1-11. Field surveys of herpetofauna (amphibians & reptiles) were conducted in andaround the PT Newmont Horas Nauli Martabe Project Area for 23 days prior theexploration. Surveys involved visual observations, light attraction, hand collection andtrapping in all major amphibian and reptile habitats. A total of 42 species of amphibiansand 28 species of reptiles (nine snakes, 16 lizards & three turtles) were identified.Based on interviews with local people at Batang Toru Village, there was reliableobservation of two additional species of turtle (Cyclemys dentata & Manouria emys)and one species of snake (Python curtus). Of the more than 42 amphibians speciesand 28 reptile species observed, 12 represented unknown species (10 frogs & twoskinks); one frog species (Occidozyga laevis) might be a new record for Sumatra.Similarity index calculations indicated that herpetofauna diversity at the six sites wasdivided between forested and heavily disturbed habitat.

Abstract

We conducted a study of morphological variation in Whitehead’s rat (Maxomys whiteheadi) based on specimens available at the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense. A total of 224 adult specimens from the Indonesian island’s of Sumatra and Kalimantan were examined using measurements of 17 skull and four external characters. Multiple analyses of variance demonstrated that 20 of characters measured varied significantly with location. Only breadth of zygomatic plate did not show a significant effect by location. One character, hind foot length, was significantly affected by sex, and the characters head and body length, breadth of braincase, and breadth of molar 1 showed a significant interaction (p< 0,05) between sex and location. Three distinct morphological groups of M. whiteheadi were recognized within Kalimantan using discriminant function analysis. These were: a West and East Kalimantan group; a Central Kalimantan group; and a North East Kalimantan group. No distinct morphological groups were observed among the Sumatra specimens. The discriminant analysis indicated that most of the variation (79,9%) distinguished the Kalimantan and Sumatra populations from one another.
