Response of Dung Beetle Communities (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) Across Gradient of Disturbance in the Tropical Lowland Forest of Buton, Sulawesi Mariana Silvana Moy; Ani Mardiastuti; Sih Kahono

Abstract

Little is known about how antropogenic disturbance triggered the biodiversity loss of functionally important insect groups in an island, including dung beetle (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). This study focused on the responses of dung beetle across gradient of disturbance in a secondary tropical lowland rainforest (Lambusango forest, Sulawesi, Indonesia). From June to August 2013, dung beetles were collected in the forest with low, intermediate, and high level of disturbances. Each disturbance level had three transects which were separated at least 500 m each other (n=9). Ten pitfall traps per transect baited with cattle dung were set, along 100 m transect for 48 hours. A total of 1.710 dung beetles, representing 29 species, were collected. Total 79% trapped specimens and 55% of species richness was found in the intermediate dis-turbance, which it was significantly differed compare to two other disturbances. Shannon-Wienner index was signifi-cantly higher in low disturbance than in intermediate and high disturbance, while dominance speciesindex mostly occured in intermediate disturbance. A two-dimensional scalling plot based on Bray-Curtis index indicated the different species composition of the beetles between disturbance levels. We concluded that dung beetle assemblages of secondary lowland rainforests appeared a robust respond to the disturbance levels.

Abstract

Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) telah melakukan penelitian di wilayah Papua dengan nama ekspedisi Wilayah Nusantara (EWIN). Penelitian dilakukan selama dua tahun di wilayah Raja Ampat, Papua Barat. Pada tahun 2007 penelitian dilakukan di Pulau Waigeo, sedangkan tahun 2008 di Pulau Batanta. Hasil penelitian di kedua pulau tersebut mengindikasikan tingginya tingkat endemisitas dan beberapa diantaranya merupakan jenis baru. Sekalipun penelitian di wilayah Papua banyak mendapatkan hasil yang menarik, namun sayangnya tidak dapat dilanjutkan. Beranjak dari hasil tersebut berhasil dijalin kerjasama penelitian dengan Conservation International (CI) Indonesia Marine Program. Penelitian dilakukan di 24 stasiun penelitian di wilayah perairan Kaimana, Papua Barat. Hasilnya sangat menarik, diperoleh 55 jenis ikan dari 20 familia, tujuh jenis diantaranya diperkirakan merupakan jenis baru yaitu: Melanotaenia sp., Glossamia sp., Pseudomugil sp1, Pseudomugil sp2, Mogurnda sp., Glossogobius sp. dan Gobiopterus sp. Dua jenis pertama telah dideskripsi pada tahun 2011 yaitu Melanotaenia mairasi Allen & Hadiaty, 2011 dan Glossamia arguni Hadiaty & Allen, 2011. Jenis lainnya masih perlu diteliti lebih lanjut.

Abstract

Phrynella merupakan marga monotipik yang sejauh ini hanya terdiri dari satu jenis, yakni Phrynella pulchra. Jenis ini terdistribusi di Semenanjung Malaysia, Sumatra dan Pulau Mentawai. Kami mengevaluasi status taksonomi populasi yang berasal dari Sumatra menggunakan data sekuen dari gen 16S rRNA mitokondria. Hubungan filogenetik dianalisis menggunakan Neighbour Joining (NJ), Maximum Likelihood (ML), Bayesian Inference Analisys (BI) dan Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Means (UPGMA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa P. pulchra adalah kelompok monofiletik terhadap anggota luar (Metaphrynella, Kaloula dan Micryletta). Kelompok monofiletik P. pulchra terbagi menjadi dua kelompok besar: Sumatra dan Semenanjung Malaysia. Kelompok Sumatra terdiri dari dua subkelompok: Aceh dan Sumatra Utara- Bengkulu. Jarak genetik (uncorrected p-distance) antara populasi Semenanjung Malaysia dan Sumatra berkisar antara 1,1 sampai 2,0%, sedangkan di dalam populasi Sumatra berkisar antara 0,0 sampai 1,1%. Rendahnya jarak genetik populasi Semenanjung Malaysia dengan Sumatra secara taksonomi menunjukkan populasi tersebut masih berada pada tingkat Jenis yang sama.

Survey on thesmall mammals biodiversity was conducted by trapping, mistnetting, harp trapping,and interview in the Protected Forest of Gunung Lumut, District of Pasir, EastKalimantan Province for three weeks on November-December 2005. The surveyresulted 110 specimens representing 18 species, and from the interview resultedadditional information of six species, bringing the total number of observed smallmammals was 20.5 % of the total small mammals known lived in Kalimantan. Fourspecies of small mammals were endemic to Kalimantan and three species wereprotected by Indonesian Law. The result of survey was expected to support thechange of status from protected forest to national park.

Abstract

Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Ba rat merupakan salah satu daerah endemis malaria. Kabupaten Lombok Barat tergolong daerah mesoen-demis malaria dengan angka “Annual Malaria Incidence” (AMI) pada tahun 2000 mencapai 43,6‰. Kom-posisi spesies parasit malaria adalah faktor yang menentukan dalam epidemiologi dan pengobatan malaria. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komposisi parasit malaria. Daerah penelitian adalah Dusun Sayong dan Longlongan, Desa Sekotong Tengah, Lombok Barat. Penelitian dilakukan dengan Malariometric Survey (MS), dimana pemeriksaan darah tepi dilakukan terhadap 200 orang penduduk di masing-masing daerah penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sediaan darah dari Sayong, Slide Positive Rate (SPR)nya 2,0%, sedangkan pemeriksaan sediaan darah dari Longlongan SPR-nya 9,0%. Komposisi parasit malaria (parasit formula) di daerah Sayong untuk Plasmodium falciparum sebesar 100,0% sedangkan untuk daerah Longlongan parasit formula untuk P. falciparum dan P. vivax masing-masing 38.8 % dan 61.2 %.
