Abstract

This qualitative study tries to revisit the concept of ESP in VHS under the latest curriculum applied in Indonesia; curriculum 2013 or K-13.  The researcher discovers current issues and several suggestions of ESP in Indonesian VHS context. Theoretically, English in VHS should employ ESP approach, but practically, it tends to be more general. The vague concept of ESP in the Indonesian VHS is one of the reasons in developing this study. On the other hand, government with its purpose of AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) eagers to make VHS students ready to work to compete with the foreign workers. However, since the implementation of K-13, English in VHS tends to have more general topics rather than in the previous curriculum (KTSP; curriculum 2006). As a result, it makes the concept of ESP in VHS more vague. The result of document analysis and observation, the researcher found several issues dealing with ESP. They are issues in course design, ESP teachers, ESP objectives, approach, and materials, and also learning assessment. Considering the major issues dealing with ESP in VHS, several countermeasures about redesign of ESP teaching in Indonesian VHS were suggested by the researcher.

The result of the mean score of students before being taught by using homophone stories was 56.34 and the mean score of students after being taught by using homophone stories was 77.5. The result showed that the mean score of post-test was higher than pre-test. Then, the writer calculated t-test to know whether or not there was significant difference students’ achievement between them who were taught before using homophone stories and students who were taught after using homophone stories. The result showed that t-test was higher than t-table. It was 9.19> 1.697. It means that there is significant difference between the students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught by using homophone stories and before being taught by using homophone stories. Abstract

This study aims at finding out teachers’ perception, knowledge and behaviour of HOTS in 2013 curriculum and finding out learning model mostly applied by the teachers. It is a descriptive qualitative study which involves 12 English teachers of SMAN 10, SMAN 12, SMAN 14, SMAN 15, and SMAN 8 of Semarang as the participants. Observation checklist, questionnaire and in-depth interview were used to obtain the data. The result showed that the teachers’ perception, knowledge and behaviour is very good (5%), good (85%), and enough (10%). Therefore, it is not enough to have this level of perception, knowledge and behaviour to achieve the 21st century skills. Problem based learning (70%) is the most used learning models among other (each 10%). It relates to teachers’ perception that problem based learning suits learning English language where problem comes first then the students find out the answer/solution. That is the reason why not all of learning models can be easily applied in the classroom. The urgency of conducting HOTS workshop is very high. The time allotment used in applying every learning model need to be reconsidered by the government.

This study is aimed for applying Read Encode Annotate and Ponder (REAP) technique for teaching reading comprehension. The objectives of the research are, (1) to find out the students’ reading comprehension after being taught without using REAP technique. (2) to find out the students’ reading comprehension after being taught by using REAP technique. (3) to know whether there is any significant difference of students’ reading comprehension being taught by using REAP technique and without REAP technique. Following the study case the writer used quantitative research. The research design of this study is true experimental design. The sample is the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Semarang. There are three classes used, they are the experimental class, control class and a class to be tried out. The writer used test to collect the data. The data was gained from the tests that were given to the students. The study found that the mean score for the class taught without REAP technique was 78.16 and the mean score for the class taught with using REAP technique was 92.05. The students’ score that was taught by using REAP technique was better than students’ score that taught without REAP technique. There was any significant difference between experimental group and control group, because the computation t-test was 7.5. So that  is higher than  because 7.5 > 2.00. It means that is acceptable and  is rejected. Based on the study, it can be concluded that using REAP technique to increase reading comprehension has positive influence to the students. So, English teachers have to use REAP technique to increase the students’ reading comprehension.
